Modern image Re-painting, Detailing and Weathering thread.

I use Krystal Klear for pipework and nameplates, just a couple of tiny dabs where the plates go gives plenty of time to line them up, and any excess can easily be peeled away when dry.

Cheers,

Phil.

Sounds similar to Plastic Magic, Deluxe Materials had a stand at Ally Pally last weekend and demo'd this to me using the Pin Flow applicator and must say it was exceptional being totally clear and zero runs which I'll use for the detailing bits.

Will look into Krystal Klear for the nameplates in case I stuff it up thus need to wipe away the mistakes and yes plenty of time to get them in position and straight...thanks for the advice.

Interestingly the plates on 68010 are 3D transfers! But if fitting Etched metal plates then I always attach them with sticky tack. It's like a jumped up blue tack that I got with various sound decoders for sealing sound chambers. It very tacky and you only use a very small amount. The plates are held on well but can be adjusted or removed at will. I will continue to use this, it has no downsides.

Hope this helps.

Andy

Thanks Andy, will look into this as you said nameplates can be removed or re-positioned at will.

Btw love your work on the loco's, only just came across this thread earlier and found it very interesting and will continue to follow...

The best thing about Krystal Klear is that it's not a solvent so you can rub it all over your hands and loco to your hearts content and it'll all peel off, no more gluey fingerprints on glazing or damaged liveries - I use it all the time now, it's a lifesaver!! :)

Ordered 2 bottles off eBay last night for just over 7 quid delivered thus will give it a go...now just have to get over my fat fingers when trying to apply the nameplates etc..

Work bench busy as always. Something I wanted to do for ages and now finally in build is DBDO 9708. Major work is now complete and its just finishing touches and prep for paint required. I have made a couple of deviations from the prototype for ease of build. It is a lit Hornby mk2 so the interior will be lit and the directional lights will work as they should. I already have the light board. So below is it in its raw state.

To go with the DBSO, I have also started a new generator van to the latest style. Here it is filled as appropriate and primed. It's now yellow along with the DBSO, more pics tomorrow.

56098 and 37254 are now paint and transfers complete and the generator van is totally complete (bar weathering). Pics later. Just the one pic for now which is 56098 masked up for the painting of the BR arrows! Was supposed to be using transfers but they would not adhere to the gloss finish, very odd. All other transfers were fine and I've never had any problems before, anyway.

56098 is almost complete. Need to find a DCC chip for it, then fit the body, fit wire couplings and fit the detailing parts. Then weather. Never ending modelling for me.

Also started weathering 47535 after some detailing work.

Wow they look excellent, top draw modeling.

Just one question, which paint did you use and how did you apply the cantrail stripe around the loco?

This is something I may perform on a spare loco body if I'm brave enough...

I use either railmatch or Phoenix precision paints, both are very good. As for cantrail stripe I use fox transfers as they are by far the best I have used and the most flexible. Not an easy task though especially if your a beginner. Also on raised sections such as around the cab on the 56 I use a uni posca orange paint pen which is really good.

Good luck it takes a good while to get to a good standard.

I have finally finished the Colas 67 and 95% 56098 in UKRL colours, (just needs some nose end pipe colours changing, wire couplings eventually and some weathering). Colas 67 is in gloss as ex works and looks great. A complex respray with lots of tricky areas but I'm really pleased with it. 56098 is DCC chipped and will get a run on the big layout this week. Tomorrow night I will have 37254 fully complete so will add some pics then. Hope you like, comments welcomed.

Hi Andy,

They are both just gorgeous especially the Colas 67, if I hadn't spent so much earlier this year on all 3 Class 68's & Kernow's NR 37 I would be definitely bidding for the 67 until I've won it.

Have always said the 67 in Colas livery looks absolutely stunning...great job and hope it finds a worthy home.

Cheers

Steve

So 37254 now fully finished with wheel slip marks etc. No weathering for this one. 56098 has been weathered today. Both of these are for me to keep and will be getting run on Badgers Cross 2 tomorrow. Also weathered my FGW 153 and the first of a rake of MEA wagons, these are to represent the cross rail spoil wagons that I see around here. I have already made the first soil load so will put a pic up when the wagon is dry. They are only halve or so filled due to the density of the spoil.

The final two pics are of the now complete 47535.

All pics are taken with the locos on my work in progress display unit. It has a Perspex cover that is UV light proof so I can have some locos on display.

Hope you enjoy the pics.

Lovely stuff Andy!

Can I ask, what varnish did you use on your UK Rail Class 56 above please? It's got a beautifully matt finish!

I've had a lot of bad luck with both Railmatch and Humbroll Matt varnish aerosols lately and looking around to see what options work well for others!

Cheers,

James

Thanks for the kind words James. Its Railmatch with an airbrush I use and quite an old pot. I've never had an issue with it touch wood. Varnish is odd stuff though. I thin it with Phoenix precision thinners. Try it with the airbrush it always comes out very flat when I use it.

Thanks

Andy

Shoey thanks for the kind words. I have had a very quiet spell since the end of last and the start of the year. Recently though I have been getting back to it and you have reminded me to start updating this thread.

I have recently completed a GWR green 165 and 150 for someone that concluded a long drawn out project. I am working on 4 MHA wagons for someone else and these are nearing completion.

For myself I have a couple of 57601 in WCRC livery (one to sell), a DRS basic 68, a GWR 153 and a pair of Colas 67’s. Absolutely loads of other things on the go but these are currently in favour.

I have also started on a rake of worn JGA wagons which is part complete. More arriving this week.

Anyway a few pics of work in progress. Will start updating regularly now I’m back on it.

Thanks again Shoey.

So the first of the RMC JGA’s has been on the work bench tonight. I have 8 of these to go with 5 ex Buxton lime and 1 DB Schenker red one that’s part complete. These will form a nice Whatley quarry rake to be hauled by various locos.

They will all be different inspired by various photos I have of them. All will be detailed similar to this one and will have the factory weathering part removed and added to as required. This one has a few more details to be added and then a little airbrush work to tie it all together.

Hope you like.
