All of it should be, keeps all the miscreants and ne'er-do-wells together.

Mike.

Cheers Mike !

It was mostly Cumberland that was part of Scotland, being from Lancashire and living in Westmorland it is the kind of thing you need to know.

No, more cutting and shutting of coaches.

Who let him out of the box?

Yesterday saw the delivery of some stuff I won on the Vectis auction. I won four lots, every other time I have been on there I have won nothing. "Ouch" went my credit card. :secret:

The first two lots were for Mk1 coaches, a few Lima but the rest the improved Tri-ang coaches where Hornby gave them a good paint finish, improved roofs, and flush glazing, just over 30 coaches in total. I have some plans. :)

The next lot was two class 110 DMUs. Like a GWR modeller with his Panniers, a 60s model can never have enough DMUs. I am thinking to keep one as a 110 and the other to be modified to another 104. Both seem to run well, I just need to rewheel the trailer cars.;)

The last lot was a right mix, a slightly battered Clan, an almost as battered Caprotti Standard Five and a LNER livery D20.

The Clan, DJH kit, it is missing a few little bits and a smoke deflector with name plate. The ladder on the tender is held in place with blue tack. It runs nicely. :good:

The D20, GEM kit, works lovely. It has some superficial damage. Not sure what to do with it as I have already become fond of it, a bit like the mongrel stray you take in until someone collects it.

The Caprotti Five, DJH kit, has some repairable damage. This is the loco I was most looking forward to getting. It couldn't even pull its tender to start with. I sorted that out and it started to run OK, it is one of those locos that works with the body off but throws a tantrum when fully dressed. I won in the end. I gave it a train to pull, it was not happy. Only white metal locos can pull a full length train so I have been told. And I did tell it that, no it would not listen.  :dontknow:

Ok it is time to cut the natter and shut up. I have been mudelling :swoon: Part one brakes.

I have spent a long time trying to improve the running of the Crapotti but it seems all in vane. So I have diverted my attention to the pile of coaches. Most are CKs, no SKs and not enough brake coaches. There were some over length BGs, 2 RMBs and a couple of sleepers.

On the Lima front there was a RB, more CKs and a BSK.

I already had a few spare SKs so was able to make a couple of trains formed BSK/SK/CK/CK/SK/BSK which a a fairly normal six coach formation. I purchased some more SKs and BSKs, including some Lima.

This still left me some spare, what to do with them? Well make some brake coaches, I was going to make 2 BSKs from CKs and a over length BG. I done one, then thought I will do a BSO as a difference. I have always wanted to make a FK from CKs,  well the bits left over and the fourth set of double doors a BCK.

I know every company that has done Mk1s (except Trix) have done a BSK but it was fun making one.

The BSO, it will make its train slightly different to the others.

The BCK, This will be paired with a FK in a train formation of BCK/FK/SK/SK/SK/BSK to make a slight difference.

Part two other Hornby conversions.

I have mentioned the FK, I also had a bash at doing a SK or SO or RSO or RUO, not sure which yet. I have also started to make a SK etc from sleeper sides, cutting out the windows and filling others. If it works I will do another as Sheffield Exchange has no need for sleeper coaches.

The FK. I know Bachmann do one but I have had the excitement of opening the box with one in it already.

With one of the over long BGs I decided to have ago at a Bullion Van. By luck  two sets of double doors on the long BG are in the right place for a Bullion Van.

Bullion van needing some filler. It still needs its roof security pods, B5 bogies and gangways removed.

Now what did I do with the spare Lima coaches?

The RB has become a diagram 25 RKB, it is a little too much catering for Exchanges normal catering needs but the excuse it is on a circular diagram. Newcastle to Liverpool for breakfast, Liverpool to Exchange limited lunches and then Sheffield to Newcastle evening meals all with the buffet open for us poorer people.

One Ck has become CK S15000, this was the Mk1 prototype. When built it had trial compartments at one end and open saloons at the other. The compartments were two 3rd class and one 1st class. The other end was two 3rd class bays and two 1st class. It was converted to a CK with one long 3rd class compartment at the 3rd class end and two short 1st class compartments at the 1st class end.

Another CK has morphed into a proper 2nd class open. These were used on Southampton boat trains where 3 classes of travel were still offered. After 1956 when poor class was upgraded to not as poor these were reclassed as FOs, still used on the boat trains. No idea how I can bluff my way with having this and S15000 at Exchange but Mallard60022 has made some suggestions.

Last is a BSO, what do you do with a few left over bits? Make a BSK into a BSO for fun and again to make a train up with a BSO instead of a BSK.

008.jpg.78696db35f300528aa80b2da1935d1e2.jpg

The RKB, photos always show up how much more work is required.

002.jpg.e8c56b4243b93cbc504a42d6ee8a184a.jpg

S15000 The corridor side is quite different.

003.jpg.e737e5cf189111b2b8374eb22134b23d.jpg

The compartment side looks very similar to a standard CK, I have altered the window spacing.

010.jpg.4105ee1c1187da3f527c68cd47654003.jpg

A standard CK with S15000.

013.jpg.471cb422610168d1bddc50f8747ea028.jpg

014.jpg.02a42767921518ea7fcdbce1133cba17.jpg

The SR "proper" SO. The window spacing is less than a first class but greater than a third class hence it is a patchwork.

011.jpg.42d1cacdb41b5075851f85e7500f578d.jpg

The BSO.

Apart from a RU (Bachmann), a CK (everyone except Replica) a FO dia 71 or RFO (Bachmann), a FO dia 73 (Replica) and RMB dia 98/99 (Tri-ang and Bachmann) I have had ago at making most diagrams or body shells designs of Mk1 production coaches.

I also now have a another Black Five, this one has the combined dome and top feed type of boiler. You can only have too many black fives when you have 843.

So it is back to the Caprotti Standard Five or carry on with remotoring Mainline Peak chassis with Lima H0 class 33 power bogies for some converted Tri-ang class 37s into English Electric Type 4s. The trial one is going well.

How about an 80XXX kitchen car, or did I miss it from early days?

Mike.

Good point Mike, forgot them and the early RF. I think a kitchen car is a bit over kill for a seven coach train (max that will fit in platforms 4 and 5). But never say never.

You could always imagineer a split working, starting out at Leeds for instance, which has the kitchen car and seating coaches already in it, then picking up the rest of the train at Sheffield.

Hi, Clive

Good to see the results of your hard work again. Some excellent stuff, there. Hope you're past your troublesome patch and looking forward to more lovely dmus in particular, including your aforementioned 104

Regards

Steve

Hi Mike,

Funny you should mention the 80xxx series coaches for LNERGE posted a photograph of diagram 700 kitchen car on Signaller69's thread just the other day.
