chrisf
I shall be looking for decent beer in Switzerland over Christmas and New Year. There is a brewpub in Luzern which is closed on New Year's Eve and, I think, New Year's Day and thanks to iL Dottore I am familiar with the Ueli in Basel. If I find any other oases I will let you know! Chris
Shadow
New one for me tonight. "Tornado" from the Windswept Brewing Co. in Lossiemouth. Moray. 6.7%. First mouthful taste's good. Hope the rest is the same. Edit :- Well that didn't take long... Very nice, will have to order some more next time I'm up that way. Very drinkable. SM42
Currently enjoying a pint of Bird's Brewery's Serendipity and very well named it is too. Happened across the place on the outskirts of Bromsgrove a few weeks back and managed to call in today. A return trip is in order I think. RMweb Premium 45156 Posted December 24, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 24, 2014 (edited) Just trying a bottle of this that I picked up in Morrisons with the shopping - delicious, sweet and bitter at the same time, but NOT a lunchtime brew as it weighs in a little heavy and I'm pleased that driving is over for today. ps - Booths in Lancashire and Cumbria is still having a special offer on many of the Marstons brews and the wines and spirits manager said the offer remains open until 4th January - that's Double Drop at £1, Old Empire at £1.25 and Owd Roger at £1.79 Edited December 24, 2014 by 45156
durham light infantry
I have in my possession what is now quite rare, a bottle of Sonnet 43 Brown Ale, apparently they stopped brewing it a while back (Durham Light Infantry may be able to clarify), it will be enjoyed some time over the festive period. If all else fails though my local has their 'Steam Beer' as a guest at the moment. I can confirm that Sonnet 43 Brown Ale is no more, I have been wearing the black armband for some time now. There are still a few bottles out there though in the hands of distributors, and Santa is reported to have some on his sleigh. If there is sufficient demand it may come back as a special, lobby them on Facebook and their website. Apparently a deal has been signed with M&B to put the rest of the range into some of their pubs. The IPA is very good, as is the Bourbon Stout. http://sonnet43.com/ Mike Edited December 24, 2014 by durham light infantry
RMweb Premium Mark Forrest Posted December 24, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 24, 2014 Ma Pardoe's "Bumblehole" and Sarah Hughes "Sedgley Surprise" (one of each, for the BCB crew) in the Lamb and Flag then onto the Cinder's Doppelganger in the Red Lion: basically it's what Christmas Eve is all about....
Kev_Lewis
This little beauty ought to do me nicely over the next few days. The Hobgobin mini kegs are no where near as fizzy as the bottled. Produces a very nice pint.
geoffers
Likewise the mini-cask of Adnams Old Ale which I picked up in Aldeburgh. Lovely and only brewed for two months in the year - wintertime.

RMweb Premium Dava Posted December 26, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 26, 2014 Our hero brewer Jeremy from Big Spruce made it to the local Farmers Market on Saturday with a vanload of selected organic fine ales. Queues of up to 40 minutes for growlers! Amazing. Craft brewers (he is the only one in Cape Breton) can sell direct to escape the Nova Scotia Socialist Republic monopoly on liquor sales. The system is broke. Now quaffing a very fine Crazy Ivan IPA, The Whole 9 Yards is yet to come. Merry Xmas, it still is here. Dava

RMweb Premium melmerby Posted December 27, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 27, 2014 . ps - Booths in Lancashire and Cumbria is still having a special offer on many of the Marstons brews and the wines and spirits manager said the offer remains open until 4th January - that's Double Drop at £1, Old Empire at £1.25 and Owd Roger at £1.79 They don't seem to have much from other breweries on offer anymore. (Marston's group beer seems to be on offer at many places just now.) I always used to stock up on some less common beers on my visit to Keswick in December, this year for the first time I bought nothing there! MinZaPint
McEwans Champion a favourite of mine as you say one to settle down with at the end of the evening, you've reminded me I've got one in the larder, that's this evening sorted !

RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted December 28, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 28, 2014 Great find. There's a new micro brewery near where the outlaws live. In the old flour mill there's now beer... They also do ciders... And takeout!

Graham Walters
I'm a keen real ale drinker, I find that once a beer gets popular, the quality seems to go down, the green eyed profit monster takes control. Classic example was Old Speckled Hen, from the tap it was a good beer, but now from the bottle and dare I suggest a can, it tastes gross. I now brew my own, from cans of malt, I can do what I like to that, add the yeast I prefer, add more or less sugar, even more hops if needs be, I allow it to ferment for a good 7-days or at least until the gravity is where I want it. i also stop the fermentation more naturally by adding a teaspoonful of Vodka rather than the commercial types which are basically a chemical. Friends and relatives have commented on how good ( and strong) the stuff is.
RMweb Premium Torper Posted December 29, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 29, 2014 Classic example was Old Speckled Hen, from the tap it was a good beer, but now from the bottle and dare I suggest a can, it tastes gross. Strangely enough, although I too like real ale, I quite like Old Speckled Hen from the can and find it preferable to the bottled version. This is odd because I normally abhor canned beers. Meanwhile, I'm hoping that the 24 bottles of Brewdog Five AM Red that I have just ordered (they were out of stock over Christmas ) arrive in time for Hogmanay. I also must manage to fit in a visit to Brewdog's newish pub in Dundee as i've never tried any of their beers on draught. DT
