Diesel Hydraulic Era O Gauge Garden Railway (Steve Beattie Class 22)

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't care to say whether bluetooth or DCC sound is better (although Druid's horn at the start of the vid sounded much more realistic than any DCC effort I've heard), what I would say is it must be a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a sunny Spring afternoon, watching (& listening!) to trains running through your lovely garden Phill...

Surely the sound quality will have a great deal more to do with the speaker size and DCC or BT is just a delivery system. Both will presumably use a digital sound file which will vary in quality depending on the way they're put together. The sound on the video will vary with the quality of the recording equipment used - again nothing to do with DCC v BT. I still don't get it.

Dave

Dave, compression and enclosure sizes for speakers/speaker type & quality ALL play their part and the standardish speaker/enclosures for DCC compound the problem. Ive written chapter and verse on 'scale' sound over the years. Sound waves, like water & smoke dont scale. On eg, Mostyn the under-baseboard speakers/sound system (more than likely had a sub woofer too) and for numerous moving trains and background noise the effect was stunning....finescale sound for a finescale layout. Sadly, I would say, listening to DCC sound, at least 50% of it doesnt sound 'scale' or worse, sounds like a fart in a bean tin Ha ha! I agree a You Tube clip isnt ideal, yet like a good quality video game (and sound track) run through 2:1, 5:1 et al speakers, Phill's loco has the same feel/effect to it and probably sounds even better in reality

Hi Dave...

DCC sound quality is constrained by the compression necessary to store samples on the chip. Lots of the harmonics are lost.

Sending quality uncompressed (in this context) sounds (even through tiny speakers) via bluetooth is much better.

Phill uses Radio Control/battery power so he's happy to have a sound system that doesn't rely on track power.

Lastly, it can cost less than £15 per loco.

Huge benefits, as I'm sure you'll agree.

Randall

Hi Randell, good points well made, I agree. Some DCC sound is superb, ie the Lionheart Panniers and one or two others, but at a lot less cost Phill's BT set up is darn close and better than, as I say, 50% of other DCC sound AFAIC/FWICT.

Kind regards to all,

CME.

Hi   :)

At the recent Doncaster GOG Show I was on the look out for line side details capable of withstanding the outdoor life. I bought some of Skytrex's excellent buildings as these are already used at Withercombe on both the indoor & outdoor sections & have proved suitable in both environments.

First job was to clean up the flash on the moldings & slap some Halfords primer on.....

post-6992-0-35528200-1497527466_thumb.jpg

Next was to ad the basic colours using various enamels .....

post-6992-0-71915400-1497527489_thumb.jpg

Then all the buildings were given the run down look with yet more enamels to suite my Withered Arm branch line...

Finally here is a pic with some of the buildings & line side features installed permanently outside, you will notice the Skytrex plate layers hut which has been there for several years now in all the British weather can through at it!

Hi Phill,

Yes I have very similar buildings of their's for outdoors - cover point motors/actuators etc....very nice work mate!

The heavily modified Skytrex Peak is also making good progress now having been fitted with Bluetooth sound motor & gears etc. This loco now just needs the details & R/C gear adding......

Superb! Very nice indeed....which RC system are you going to use, the norm., or trial deltang versions?

Kindest regards and ATVB

Hi CME :)

I will be using usual system as I already have the gear, but for the next one I will trial Deltang as I have heard some very positive reports & it a lot cheaper

Hi Phill,

Thanks for the update I saw some Deltang products being used on a SM32 live steam, indoor, BLT shunting layout. The locos were fitted with the steam version of the Deltang system and 'Slomo' modified live steam locos. The whole set up worked better than most DC layouts but with real steam and smoke effects. I was very impressed!

A bit too hot for me outside today  :heat:

So I have been doing a few more line side details, in this case a sheet of etch LSWR signs from a S/H stall at a Guild show.

The first job was to cut them out & solder them to a bit of oo gauge rail I had lying around (which looked about right for 7mm fence posts to me ;) )

post-6992-0-08678700-1497791183_thumb.jpg

Then with a bit of enamel .....

post-6992-0-93846700-1497791210_thumb.jpg

& a touch of weathering to tone them down a bit ......

In the last couple of weeks I have been adding a few line side details to the Withercombe branch. One such project has been the creation of telegraph poles which were a feature of every UK railway line, but now a thing of the past.
These were made using some small garden canes i came across in a local store with the addition of some garden wire from the same store. The wire makes a reasonable representation of the horizontal bar & insulators at each end, this style of telegraph pole were very typical of branch lines such as Withercombe..........

Hi Phill,

That is very brave of you - nice work, a nice addition.

We have added such to the H&BLR as the line is a little above thigh height.....I wont be able to do the same on Down Ampney as they would get crushed very quickly.

It's a NMB resin kit which is now sold by Skytrex :)

Thanks for that. I'm interested because I need to build a stone version for Pencarrow and the upper storey windows look just the ticket for the build.

Your welcome Chris, they also do a stone version of this Signal Box   http://www.ogauge.co.uk/signal-boxes/249-7-154-lswr-stone-built-signal-box.html?search_query=signal+box&results=17&HTTP_REFERER=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ogauge.co.uk%2Fsearch%3Fcontroller%3Dsearch%26orderby%3Dposition%26orderway%3Ddesc%26search_query%3Dsignal%2Bbox%26submit_search%3D   :)

Now that I have approximately 50 telegraph poles running round the garden :O, I have moved onto the next couple of projects for Withercombe.

The first one is a Depatmental coach for withercombe in the style of this one.......

post-6992-0-71121500-1498638639.jpg

I am using a Easybuild MK1 Suburban as a basis for this project.....

post-6992-0-35631700-1498638669.jpg

I am also building a signal using MSE components based on this one at Ilfracombe....

post-6992-0-49188100-1498638621.jpg

Signal building is a new experience for me, so feel free to offer help & advice :). I have made a start by soldering up the main post last night.

post-6992-0-31725300-1498638787.jpg

The instructions say us a square piece of brass for the base, but I have added a spike instead so the signal can be planted less visibly ?

Hi Phill,

Loving the coach, did you build it from a kit or did Shawn supply the parts?

Loving the signal too-I have little or no experience in signal building, so I shall watch your progress with interest.

Keep up the good work,
