HitchinLoco Posted April 27, 2012 Share Posted April 27, 2012 Do not know if this helps, but my late father was based at Hitchin Herts PW DEPARTMENT in the 60-80s and he collected his new vehicles from York Way in London which was a very large garage at the time.He started with an Austin k2 with a tilt covered back, then the first new vehicle was 1960 Bed TK also with a tilt back (photo on here BLR 120). After the TK came BMC Stub nose FG that I remember.That was yellow open back. Can not recall the reg. Our neibour also drove for BR at the same time as my father in Engineering, He had a flat nose Morris Comercial boxed rear, then 1960 had a Thames trader short wheel base tipper. can not remember any others he had. Do remember my father driving a CA Bed mini bus on Sunday workings, no split screen. The parcel side had a Bedford before the J mod with cab in the body type. a few scam and karrier artics. Regards. The GWR Road Motor Dept was originally based at Slough and I think survived there until the early 1960s. The GWR Driving School was at Taplow (on the Down side at the west end of the station) and also remained in railway ownership well into the 1960s - possibly a little later; the road layout there allowed all basic vehicle handling training to be conducted 'off road' until trainees were sufficiently advanced to be taken out on the public highway. The Instructors/Inspectors at the Driving School at Taplow were also accredited Examiners for an ordinary Driving Licence and if you were passed by the appropriate person at Taplow you were automatically entitled to an ordinary UK Driving Licence for therelevant group(s) of vehicles. I don't know when this practice ceased but my boss back in 1973 had been taught to drive (a car) at Taplow no later than the early 1960s and obtained his standard Driving Licence through them as well. Presumably other Railways/Regions had similar arrangements. I think some vestige of the Taplow school road layout still survives but is was sold-off as a 'driver training site' many years ago. I am also into 1/24th scale lorry models, and earlier this year I built this: Not that much use for model railways given the scale I guess, but I thought you might like to see it. Apart from the wheels it is totally built from scratch using flat sheet plasticard. Of interest is the short lived fleet numbering used by the Eastern Region during the early 70s after everybody else stopped using them. Have we got the registration by any chance ? This was the cover shot from the film 'The Navigators' (well worth a watch) which was made in 2001, so I would suspect, the crewbus was brought for the film and painted into pseudo BR colours, hence why the typeface may be wrong. I think it's a Commer N1 from before the war. A similar one with conventional tilt is in the NRM. The FGs at Llandudno were withdrawn awaiting disposal in 1986 parked on the cab road. The road motors was in the adjoining goods shed. I have a shot of the one at the front of the 3. The last shot, I remember was a TV drama made in the run up to privitisation. I enjoyed it. The roadrunner crewbus is very original, the font is a bit thin, but look at this one at Knottingley, it looks the same font wise, complete with a freight rover 400, bedford astra and something else in the top right. http://www.flickr.co...N08/6053452926/ Also, the eastleight shot from above is a commando, it has the rear wrap around windows in the back of the cab. And the amount of lock that you see on the front wheels is about as much as you got, you could always tell someone who had never driven a BRUFF before, as they always had to take two attempts at getting round tight corners, as they didnt allow for the massive turning circle.....
