Here is D848, already withdrawn:

Sultan looks in very good condition for a loco which, according to my books, had been withdrawn for over a year by Apr70.

One of the few Warships that I never saw, sadly.

Looks more like D853 behind to me:

Ah - Thanks Robert - was Thruster out of traffic at this time too then?

Been scanning a lot this weekend - not getting on too well with the new scanner to be honest, its colour correction is quite naff, and even feeding it "perfect" slides it still does badly. The software that comes with it is none too good, and I still can't get the excellent vuescan software to speak to the scanner. It looks like a reversion to plan A and repair the gold standard scanner which with hindsight is what I should have done in the first place.

Anyhow- had the flat bed scanner out tonight as I'd won many copyrighted prints with no negs over the years- they've come out rather nicely.

First is a batch of four from Reading during the hydraulic glory years- I don't know the precise date but it is probably 1972-4 vintage - as it chimes perfectly with my memory of that era when the Westerns ruled the WR and the class 50s were some Midland thingies.

Enjoy this little lot as I say, dates unknown but look like they were taken on the same day, if anyone can identify the services from the headcodes if they have WTT that would be helpful (especially D1029 on a Stone train - is this bound for the M25 works, thus making it around 1972?). Edit - looks like no Talisman clips so must be pre-1974.

Good afternoon another batch of four with some rarities I've acquired over the years

First one of my only 2 slides of a D600 Warship

D600 at an unknown location

post-6925-0-91931400-1439298002_thumb.jpg

Next class 22 D6320 rumbles across Gloucester Horton Road crossing, 29th May 1969

post-6925-0-34511700-1439298017_thumb.jpg

Then D828 Magnificent at Dawlish, 16th August 1969

post-6925-0-24483600-1439298049_thumb.jpg

Finally a rarely photographed Western, D1060 Western Dominion piloting peak D148 at Bristol Temple Meads.

It was common at this time for Warships to be coupled to Southbound trains, and as we have discussed before probably to find a path for balancing moves. I've not seen too many photos of Western-peak combos. 14th June 1969.

Cracking stuff as usual Neil, thanks for sharing htose ;)

I'll lay odds on your D600 shot being Swindon, more specifically the 'Con Yard', the open area to the west of the works where locos awaiting parts were often dumped for weeks or months on end until the parts arrived. The sheeted over D63xx looks like it's minus some roof panels so is probably waiting for an engine swap and the yellow panel on D600 looks quite fresh - it was applied during a works visit from 13/2/62 to 10/5/62 so the photo could have been taken not long after that.

Nice shot of D6320 'Lister' at Gloucester!

Have to agree with Nidge on all counts - especially Lister!

9B51 was generic headcode for Gloucester based trip workings

How thoughtless Neil !!!

.

The only one I never saw

.

Last chance was by taking a  Cardiff - Swindon 'footex' (4th. April 1972 ) as it was allegedly on 'the dump'

.

It was, off it's bogies, and not visible from the mainline and passing trains.

.

Brian R.

.

P.S.

For those interested in such things, we also lost 3-1.

And just as my train was about to leave, D1009 arrived from the west on what looks like an ECS working.

attachicon.gif100202 D1009 PLY 18:10:76.jpg

However, the trip home was going to be fun, as just prior to that D1015 had backed onto my train to take me back to Reading. This photo was taken from the carriage door as the loco reversed towards me.

So, I suppose that it had not been too bad a day despite the weather, as including the Westerns passed en-route I had seen 9 of the class that day which was only four months before they had all been withdrawn.

I'm guessing you caught the 07.30 from Paddington? On the 18th 1015 worked West on 1B15 08.30 Padd - Plymouth, and went back on the 16.10 Penzance - Paddington (1A09) at 18.25 from Plymouth. D1009 came into Plymouth on 4A13 15.22 Penzance - Paddington Perishables. 1036 hauled withdrawn 1028 & 1051 from Laira to Swindon, 1048 worked the 07.40 Leeds to Penzance from Plymouth at 14.23 and 1058 came in from Cornwall on 1M74 13.55 Penzance to Birmingham. Don't suppose you know what came into Plymouth on 1V71, on 1A09 from Penzance to Plymouth and from Plymouth on 1M74 do you please? You also mention 1033 but that had been withdrawn by then? Don't have any info for 1013 tho, Can you help with that please? Thanks

Some more for the weekend.

The first D1056 in September 1975 backing onto her train at Plymouth North Road- one where the new scanner behaved itself!

post-6925-0-56429600-1439565134_thumb.jpg

Next D1003 at Newton Abbott on 22nd August 1969 with a motorail service.

post-6925-0-11169900-1439565227_thumb.jpg

The early withdrawals from the class 22 fleet, being scrapped in 1969 are rarely photographed. I was pleased to win these photos recently. 6351 at (edit) Swindon stock shed in (edit) 1962/3 with clear evidence of a recent prang, in the company of Hymek D7010.

6343 at Old Oak again in 1969.

So is D6343 at the same location Nidge? I think the shots were taken the same day- no location details provided I had thought it was OOC but know you know the place like the back of your hand!

D6343 is outside the factory at Old Oak - it definitely isn't by the Stock Shed at Swindon.
