I've been following your build for some time now and it really is inspirational, keep up the good work.

I'm intrigued with the use of PIR and am going to go back and read through how you work with it again before I ask any stupid questions. In the meantime a very basic question, what have you used for the orange pipe please, it looks to be just right that's all. Thanks in advance

Hi Iron Horse

Firstly thank you for the compliments.

As for the pipe, they are the plastic tubes from cotton buds painted orange. Just snip off the cotton ends and Bob's your uncle.

Hope that's of help.

Cheers

Hi Marcus

The area opposite the fuelling point alongside the old retaining wall is now looking really good.

I really like the shot taken at rail level and looking towards the road bridge. It just screams Peak Forest to me.

On the prototype the bit of ground in front of the retaining wall has a different use everytime I visit. As such it provides a huge variety of different detail to model.

I think you have captured it superbly.

Attached are a few photos of some of the varied building works should you want to ring a few changes.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas!

 Andy.

Thanks Andy and Happy New Year to you.

Once again you've come up trumps with those photos. They will come in really useful. Your certainly right about that spot being used a lot. When they did the huge refurbishment on Dove Holes tunnel a few years back it was absolutely wedged out with different materials. I should imagine its the nearest road access point where materials can be loaded onto Road/Rail vehicles to trip to the work site. As you say it makes for some interesting modelling.

All the best

Marcus

Had a nice little running session today. Well 5 hours to be exact!! We also managed to slip into the modellers parallel universe where the Peak Line never shut and is in use as a diversionary route due to engineering blockades on both the WCML and the MML.

Here's a few pictures showing today's unusual and not so unusual visitors........

First up 66731 passes through with a Trafford Park to Felixstowe service away from its normal WCML route.

Well its been an interesting day at PDW as you can see. As well as the trains it shows off recent work I've carried out on the side of the layout opposite the station and fuelling point. Might be some more interesting stuff about tomorrow.

Cheers for now

Hi Marcus,

Nice layout.

Apologies if it's been mentioned before, but what brand of PIR do you use, and how do you buy it? Celotex seems to be a brand - is that right?

cheers

Ben A.

Ben, Celotex is one of the cheaper brands yes and can be had from any branch of Wickes as well as building merchants. I started using PIR a long time ago (I work in the building industry and it looked like a perfect material when I came across it way back). As Marcus has said there is also Kingspan and several other brands including Xtratherm. Kingspan is regarded as the industry standard and as such is very expensive. For what we need though the cheaper the better really. It works very well for a base to scenics as it easily carved, it breaks with a cleavage fracture the same as real rock faces and consists of closed cell foam which doesn't absorb moisture and so glues very well with PVA and its watered down version. I can't recommend it enough. Edited by RBE

Hi Marcus,

Lots of lovely shots there.  The whole layout is drawing together beautifully.

You may be about to cause panic in Gov't Security circles, with identically numbered Flasks  ......    :scratchhead:  :scratchhead:  :nono:

When the Response Units arrive, just don't make any sudden movements, arms straight up and listen very carefully to  what they say!  .....     :hunter:  :scared:   :hunter:

Looking forward to seeing today's play work.

Regards and thanks for the views.

Brilliant photos Marcus, it looks really good.

Highlights for me are the one of 37710 on a Steel service, looking back towards the station and bridge which look superb, and the long shot of the double-headed 37s on the limestone, in the cutting, which is just so evocative of the area.

Can't wait to see what you do next.

Al.

That looks great,

Really captures the essence of the area.

I was up there in the snow briefly in november and this just captures the restricted and busy nature of that spot well
