RMweb Premium great northern Posted November 16, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 16, 2013 Lovely shots Eric. Those NB engines really are very attractive beasties. And yet more of those mythical Pacifics........
Bon Accord
Another great selection of shots, in particular it's wonderful to see models of all the ex NB classes - something no East Coast layout can do without! On a slightly separate note, is the J38 a kit or a rebuilt Bachmann J39?

On a slightly separate note, is the J38 a kit or a rebuilt Bachmann J39? Glad you liked the photos. The J38 is a Wills kit which I purchased when it was first introduced about 20 years ago. It fairly fits in to the layout as there were plenty J38s in the area and were strong working locos well suited to the freight work.

kingfisher24
terrific pictures of this great layout, i especially like the j88's and wish the kits were still available, instead i have to make the j88 from r-t-r parts, not quite as refined but look god enough for me. i use a mainline j72 body and a Dapol/Hornby terrier chassis. my first coversion was destroyed by a sudden stop caused by a 20 month old hand and i ended up making another (the finished loco). this cost me less than twenty pounds. so i decided to make another one and this still needs work but is getting there. i mainly have to tidy up the front end and re-attatch the connecting rods as i mounted these below the crosshead and the should be higher. a job for another day gary p

kingfisher24
Excellent work Gary. It fairly looks the part. - It's good to see another NBR loco on the Web! Eric Eric thanks for the comment, as long as the loco looks good enough that's good enough for me, i'm now working on a D51 4-4-0t using a lengthened terrier body and, am working out a NB Atlantic possibly a lord nelson body as a basis but this is still just in my head, it depends on the boiler size, although i have a chassis that should do the job but the D51 is easier not to mention smaller so decided to do this first. gary

RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted December 28, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 28, 2013 Some snaps of a trip on one of the morning trains from Pinkhill to Longdrem then northwards on the main line with a well turned out D30. Along the way are various scenes within the vicinity of the train, typical of the railway activity seen in the area all these years ago ranging from the Haymarket pacifics to the ex-N.B.R. locos on their daily workings. Of course it only skims the surface but hopefully gives a flavour of the ECML activity outside the city in the late 50s

RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted February 28, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 28, 2014 The Waverley Station and Haymarket Shed welcomed daily visits from Gateshead and Heaton pacifics. RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted March 19, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 19, 2014 A bit of an experiment here with the recent purchase of a new lap-top complete with Windows 8 which has led me into many areas of great confusion. Not too sure how the pictures will transfer across as I cannot get the size down to below 1mb as easy as before. By coincidence this computer change occurred at the same time as another Haymarket A3 was completed and ready for a running in session on the layout, so hopefully, here are a couple of snaps of Grand Parade.
davidw
Eric - i've never asked and should have whose track do you use?
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted March 19, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 19, 2014 David, Obviously the photo size has not turned out as normal so it's back to the drawing board. On to much easier topics, the track used is SMP which has worked out well over the years.

It's a nightmare trying to navigate around it, I use the Canon software I got with my Camera to resize photos. Grand Parade looks very good. RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted March 29, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 29, 2014 Grand Parade now in full size photos at long last. A couple of photographers back in the autumn of 1959 looked out for Grand Parade and its fellow Haymarket steed, Felstead, as both had been down at Doncaster for a general overhaul a couple of months earlier. Fortunately their patience was rewarded on a particular day. Between hanging about for 60089 and 60090 to pass by they also snapped a few other trains some of which are also included here.
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted April 16, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 16, 2014 As the Monty Python gang remarked - And now for something completely different. One of my railway pals visited the layout yesterday and brought with him an A3 model he purchased a few years ago. The difference being it is modelled in HO scale. The model was produced 20 years ago by Samhongsa of Korea. 150 were produced of Flying Scotsman in LNER livery plus 25 in BR livery. In addition, a further 5 of each were produced for Knight of Thistle, Robert the Devil, Melton, Galtee More and Papyrus. I took the opportunity to photograph it beside one of my Haymarket A3s (a Hornby model) to show a direct comparison between HO and OO scale featuring the same class of loco. The difference in size is all too apparent however hopefully this will be of interest. - Both locos are good runners!
Bon Accord
Many thanks for posting these pics as it's the first time I've seen a direct comparison made between OO and HO - I'm really quite surprised just how much larger the OO model is!
will5210
I remember those being advertised in the back of Railway Modeller! They were quite dear if I remember right. The difference in size is greater than I would have thought. You could fit quite a lot more layout in the same space with HO I imagine.
