RMweb Gold big jim Posted November 26, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 26, 2016 Hi big Jim the one I picked up had a hand written sticker saying sold as seen and that the name plates and instructions was missing. I also picked a 08 shutter up and that said glue marks on body and it was priced just under £70. Perhaps I was too hasty because after seeing those two I just walked off. Thinking about it the one I picked up said no etched plates too, the 37 I picked up just has no red lights one end, j think I can live with that for the price I know this thread isn't for bragging about bargains but the NSE thumper I picked up from the same stand for £100 was a proper bargain, don't need it, doesn't fit my modelling era but what a cracking model! kintbury jon
I'd have bought the translator pack too. If anyone wants to take pity on me, i'd be happy to pay postage! Shame they can't sell them online at that price!

I also picked a 08 shutter up and that said glue marks on body and it was priced just under £70. Perhaps I was too hasty because after seeing those two I just walked off. I made the 915 scrum, and had a second visit in the afternoon, and a quick look at the finish, they did gave some additional stock, though by 4pm it did have a"left overs" feel to it. I think they have some additional, as yet unopened boxes for tomorrow, though no idea whats in them. My bargain of the day for me has to be Thumpers at £105. I also bought Mauritania, 42062, 80104, 08604 (ltd Ed). There was quite a few Blue Pullmans on sale at a price starting with a 2.. In the morning there was quite a lot of cl 105/108/205/416 and Blue Pullmans, and on the steam side Fairburn tanks. My 42062 is to become a manchester area example. As you'd expect for returns, there was a lot of "one only" examples and where there were duplicates the "issue" was invariably different for each. I stayed away from the glue/scratch marked ones and focused on the "something missing", though beggars can't be choosers in a feeding frenzy..., when I got hold of the 40 I wouldn't let go, especially at the price it was, and i'm not saying :-) I looked all over for invicta but couldn't find them, I'm after a few more cct's. My warley map had them as next to Booklaw, but on the day they seemed to have a much bigger stand than my map showed.

Invicta are in the same row as A Oakes about two stalls down on the opposite side. A Oakes can be easily seen because they always put flags above there stall. delticman
I just got an email from TTC Diecast with some reduced Hornby offerings, I don`t know how long the offers are on but I thought someone must be interested in this bargain :- http://www.ttcdiecast.com/Hornby-r3403-intercity-125-anniversary-train-pack---limited-edition--special-offer--59851-p.asp Geoff

Coldgunner
£115 for the Silver Jubilee A4's, picked up 2509 today. Might not be seen as a bargain as such, but Locomotion Models do pretty good prices.

RMweb Premium Coryton Posted November 29, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 29, 2016 It reminds me of when Modelzone collapsed last time, everything besides Hornby reduced. WHSmiths havent really got to grip with it, why for such a big company have they not put it online!! Hmm. Some Hornby things were definitely reduced when the real Modelzone closed - I got a half price Airfix painting station. Not much Bachmann left in the Cardiff Smiths Modelzone now. A few trucks and coaches. There is a blue 2 car class 105 at £82.49 (or £66 if you have a 20% off card) which is a very good price. Still quite a good assortment of Oxford road vehicles - buy one get one free, and the small print says you can't combine with other discounts. I haven't tried it. The Bachmann reduced prices do combine with the £5 off purchases over £20 till vouchers* and presumably also with the 20% off cards. This is presumably the end game for Modelzone in Smiths. Seems very odd to do it now rather than waiting until after Christmas. I presume Hornby is pulling out of the concession and they don't consider it viable without that. * My total came to £19.99 so I had to buy some paint to get it over £20... scottrains29
Does anyone know if the Glasgow Modelzone has the same bogof deal on OxfordRail? Might head in at the weekend and have a look. Jenny Emily
Does anyone know if the Glasgow Modelzone has the same bogof deal on OxfordRail? Might head in at the weekend and have a look. If Modelzone do the same deal after the OxfordRail Mk3s are released then they'll be raking it in! I can't imagine that selling the Oxford Rail items at effectively half RRP will actually make them anything. I suspect that they are managing to accidentally make a loss on each item sold. They did the same deal in Jan 2016 sales on Hornby so worth keeping an eye out (I got a Hornby Western Master elink set for £89.99). WHSmiths seem to be applying the same methodology of selling books to Modelzone stock. Keep it at RRP for awhile then clear the stocks at knock down prices periodically (they're doing the same on books currently). So may not be bad news. Always worth keeping an eye on non-model railway specialists. Best bargains tend to come from them (although limited choice!). I've had below trade price success from Amazon/M&S/Sainsbury/Argos/WHsmith (modelzone) before. I may have worked in model railway trade many moons ago, sometimes you need other sources of cheap stock *costs 10 pints of Real Ale...

But I think it's more likely the result of Hornby pulling out of its concessions and Smiths not wanting to continue if they have to buy in all the stock not just the non Hornby. I don't think they've done a sale like this since they started with their mini-Modelzones.
