Hi Kev,

I wondered where you had disappeared to, I think the panelling looks great and that should really stand out well once painted and weathered.

I have used the Wayoh bogies in the past, they feel and look a bit delicate but they do go together quick and are fit for purpose.

ATB,

Martyn.

Hi Martyn,

I didn't really disappear, I have been lurking about clicking the 'like' button far too much.

The Wayoh bogies aren't that bad. Certainly no worse that the ones that came with the kit, just a lot easier to assemble.

The JLTRT MK1 BG I have seven eighths finished has Wayoh bogies, the kit was purchased secondhand and most of the bogie castings were missing. I must get around to finishing that so I can sell it to fund purchase of some Collet stock.

Hi Kev

Fine models and good workmanship, on the subject of the Slinn Siphons book is there any photos in there of a Siphon J inBR days? The reason for asking is I have just bought a ready built 7mm model which just has a number on the side and I'm fairly sure there should be other lettering such as tare and a Siphon J branding, but, can't find a photo for reference yet. Sorry to go off topic.

Ian

Hi Ian,

There is one photo of a Siphon J on BR days. The caption says "Siphon J of Diagram 0.40 W1221W in the last livery for this class of van", as they were all scrapped in 1961/2 this would be crimson, or possibly maroon? The only lettering visible is on the right hand bottom corner and reads:

W1221W

15 tons

Tare 28 - 3 - 0

Hope this helps.

Impressive looking beastie

At 40' (11" in O gauge) it's not a huge vehicle, but it looks massive. I'll have to get a photo of it lined up with the Siphon C and Siphon G.

Your scratch built driver and trailer carriages got me thinking the other day. A full brake could be handy for my layout and the only kits available are for the large 58' diagrams. So at some point I hope to have a go at building a Dean 40' K15 full brake. I have a suitable drawing in one of my books that I can scale up.

I have the DJB version of the F to build. I always liked the Dean full brake I made a few of the K's one along with their F. Not made either in 7mm yet.

Go on you know it will be easy only a few drop lights to cut.

A lot of the panelling was plated over during their lives. So I could quite legitimately cut a few corners when building a Dean full brake.

Siphon F Part 3.

Well, this thing has been driving me insane over the last few days. So many fiddly detail parts to fit. But it's finally done.

If the weather turns out as nice as they claim tomorrow I'm going to be having a big primer spraying session.

Well, wasn't the weather nice today. :sungum:  I took full advantage of it this afternoon and managed to get primer on six wagons in total. Four are repaints of previous projects, the other two being the two Siphons.

First to receive a few coats of etch primer was the Siphon C.

post-12902-0-74776700-1394405871_thumb.jpg

Then came the Siphon F.

Getting the primer into the louvres was a bit of a challenge with the rattle can. The bogies on the Siphon F were sprayed with black etch primer, so they're done except for a little touching up. Next the brown.

They both look great. Roundal or GW?

I always liked the white rooves with brown to the first rain strip.

When I built a load of Keyser ones, I did most with the large early GW. I was amazed how well they looked.

I actually got my DJB one out the box to see if it was all there. So getting closer.

Hi Kev,

If you go for a K14 there is a restored one at Didcot for you to measure up. Another thought is that Roxey have just done a 4mm scale version of the K14/15/16 full brakes. Perhaps they might do the etches in 7mm scale for you?

All the best,

Castle

They will both have the roundel to go with my post war time period.

I look forwards to seeing your build of the DJB kit.

Thanks for the suggestion, but last week I picked up a K2/3 kit from eBay. The kit is from the same Metal Models range as the Siphon F, a stunning quality kit, especially with it being 40 years old.

The K2's and K3's were all scrapped in the early 1930's, so I'll be using a bit of Rule 1 to run it on my layout.

Well done; I don't think they come up that often.

I am sure you'll have as much satisfaction from it, and get on as well, as you did with the Siphon F.  As you say, it is a stunning quality kit, particularly for its age.

Like my Siphon F, I built my K3 about 40 years ago and it is also in the much earlier GWR lake livery:

And, yes, I suppose it is a 'pretty' prototype - but I would say more that it was 'handsome'!

I shall look forward to seeing your build here.

Thats the 40 foot one? If so I think they were the prettiest of the GW full brakes.

It is indeed the 40' one. The Dean full brakes are smart little vehicles.

The GWR built nearly 300 of them to different diagrams so they must have been useful. It should be perfect for my backwater, out-of-the-way BLT. Small and of a long past vintage.

And I thought it had been a while since I updated my Inglebourne thread, this one is even longer!

My latest project should be interesting. Last year I acquired a poorly build Scorpio 14XX from a specialist toy auction and after stripping the paint it was looking even worse. The frames should be salvageable, but the body is little more than scrap. I've therefore decided to use as much as I can to improve my poor little Connoisseur Nellie.

Nellie Goes To Swindon Part 1.

Here's my Nellie as built a few years ago.

I don't plan on doing much at all to the frames, but the body first needed to be stripped.

The dunking in cellulose thinners left a lot of staining, so a good scrub with some Barkeepers Friend bought it up pretty well ready for further disassembly,

I've made a rather long list of the changes and additions I plan to make and will probably post the list tomorrow.

Nellie Goes To Swindon: Part 2.

Here's the list of changes to Nellie that I've come up with. I may not do all of these, but as I have pretty much all the bits I don't see why I can't go all the way.

  • Sprung buffers,
  • Vacuum and steam heating pipes, plus pipework,
  • Screw couplings,
  • GWR pattern front lamp irons,
  • Tool boxes,
  • New smokebox door handle (the whitemetal one has been damaged),
  • One piece somekbox handrail,
  • Chimney and dome,
  • Top feed, plus pipework,
  • Firebox alterations,
  • GWR pattern safety valve,
  • GWR whistle,
  • GWR tank fillers and vents,
  • Cab hand rails,
  • Tank top beading (I left this off originally)
  • Bunker top beading (as above),
  • Bunker steps,
  • GWR pattern rear lamp irons,
  • Tool hangers,
  • ATC box,
  • Move reverser,
  • Rear window bars,
  • Cab doors.

I think that's all.
