The CLC through Stockport

Recommended Posts

  • 1 month later...

Im going to try and find out some more info on the Brush type 2's that would visit Walton CLC shed Liverpool in the early 1960s., the shed closed in 1963, they may have continued to work into Walton but I think we are looking at pre 63 moreso.

they worked freights from Sheffield, the men would lodge overnight. I have a photo of one at Walton and have heard some recollections from people who saw them there.

If they didnt come via this route, the only other I can think of is via Manchester Oxford road?

and Im assuming they would work unaided via the Woodhead?

The more I think about it, I think they will have come via Caddishead, but would have gone via Cheadle heath and the Hope valley.

could maybe have gone via Romiley I guess?

my first thought was that they would have taken the LNER route via Woodhead?

someone on a Liverpool railway yahoo has come up top trumps with sightings of no less than 35 different Sheffield Darnall 41a locos between 1961 and 1965 on this working, I expected a handful so this is an interesting surprise.

"the Monday - Friday return was a 6E16 22.05 Walton Sidings to Sheffield E.S.S.. On Saturdays this
train was booked to leave at 18.45hrs

Here’s the full list of Brush Type 2 locomotives I actually saw on the line...

D5680-8/90-2. D5810/15/24/6/30/2/6/41/3-5/47-52/56-61

Notes made by the late John Ward, who lived in a house that backed on to
the old CLC north of Gateacre station, are helpful. For Friday, 30th June
1961 he wrote, “10.15 D5687 41A Out Freight.1st diesel on CLC.” John
recorded nothing of the class after Friday 11th June 1965, when D5684 was
seen heading light towards Walton at 21.15hrs. Perhaps significantly the
new WTT commenced on the following Monday, 14th June 1965

Timings shown are drawn from the 1962/63 WTT

Locomotives used were based at Sheffield, Darnall (coded 41A), until it
lost most of its Brush Type 2 allocation together with its shed code to the
newly- built Tinsley Diesel Depot on opening from Sunday 26th April
1964. However,
I did once record what I think was a Wath (41C) resident when D5832
appeared on Monday 12th October 1964"

Ive had the pleasure of operating John Whitehead's excellent 2mm scale model of Stockport Tiviot dale at the Liverpool model railway show this weekend and will be doing so at Stockport in a fortnight.

when I asked John if there was anything from a research point of view he would like, the main thing was colour shots of the station buildings, so if anyone knows of any im sure he would be delighted to see them.

The ones with the Woodhead electrics are around Godley Junction; in some of them, you can see the Walls sausage factory in the background; about the only thing still there! The one of Oliver Cromwell looks to be at Heaton Chapel station, heading towards Manchester.

Have to say some truly excellent shots of this much loved area of the network. So much atmosphere I can understand why Barry Norman produced a layout design based on Stockport Tiviot Dale in his book 'Designing a Layout' (page 90/91) The extra effort of going out side the shed to get the approaches right would be well worth the final scene. I was showing my eldest son the above photo of the class 40 at Woodley Junc as he's well into 'old school fords' and he was telling me that at current market prices the train of Mk1 escorts would be worth a fortune ( a real mint one can command a price of  20k )

Keep the shots coming really look forward to new shots.

The first six shots in this string, 177-01 - 177-06 are of Godley Junction. The next group, before you get to Tiviot Dale may be Heaton Mersey? This is another great collection, thanks very much for posting Michael (and Mrs Sutherland).

best wishes,

Alastair M
