My detailing/repainting projects

Recommended Posts

Hi Lee

I've not done a 67, but had the same problem on a Hornby EWS 60.  Hornby's "gold" band on it was more "yellow-ish" than gold, so rather than spend time trying to match it, easier to mask and re-paint the whole band with the correct colour.

Have to agree -  that 0 gauge 26 is most impressive !!

HTH

Ken

Aye, that's the conclusion I came to as well re the 67.

Remind me not to take any more Hornby 67's in for renumbering! Have ended up having to respray the whole of the EWS gold band.

Beat work as usual Lee, but the 26 looks stunning! O gauge is certainly tempting....

Cheers bud. I picked up a pair of 7mm 37's last Year to re work...they are still sitting in their boxes! You don't know how difficult it's been this week trying to resist ordering a 26. Don't think I'll last much longer....

Good evening. Bog carts seem to be the name of the game at the minute. I have been working on a pile of Bachmann 101's, and I have to say they scrub up, or should that be dirty down, very well.

Meet Bob. He likes driving dmu's.

N gauge. It's come a long way, but some of the practical drawbacks seem worse than ever. I could never see me using this scale. Why? Read on.

Straight out of the box, the latest stuff is looking pretty decent these days. Here we have a Dapol 26 and 27.

16396620792_7e9fcaec4e_o.jpg019 by rothburyuk, on Flickr

16211310039_9ced61f82e_o.jpg023 by rothburyuk, on Flickr

Then we move onto fitting dcc chips. Decent ones too, mini Lenz jobbies. And this is where the problem starts.

2 chassis, exactly the same. However for some reason, the sockets for the removable cab light plugs have been fitted two different ways. Neither are particularly useful when it comes to fitting a chip. In the following picture, you can see this.

16395792341_95da7e6ffc_o.jpg026 by rothburyuk, on Flickr

The one on the right is mounted correctly, and allows the chip rest on top of it. or so I thought. The one on the left is mounted upside down, making it impossible to fit a chip at all.

This is the one fixed the correct way around, but even so, there is no space between the mounting socket for the chip, and the 'floor' of the circuit board that the chip rests on, to allow it to fit.

16396615942_483a035cb7_o.jpg027 by rothburyuk, on Flickr

And this is the one with the lighting socket mounted the incorrect way around. It's physically impossible to even get a chip into it's socket as can be seen.

16211632427_c4a2def947_o.jpg030 by rothburyuk, on Flickr

I also had this issue with a Dapol 58...exactly the same. The solution is that the metal chassis block should not be as thick...that in turn would allow some breathing space, the chip mounting board could be lowered a bit, resulting in a bit more space to accommodate a chip. As it is the chip cannot protrude further than the top of the chassis block as it prevents the body from sitting properly. How people work with sound and 2mm is beyond me.

00 and 0 for me!

Can't persuade you to do the simple modification of setting back the bogie springs?  Couldn't find a thread detailing this (pictures lost with Fotopic's demise), bur post 25 in this thread should give you the ghist for a 4mm version.  7mm model has the same issue though:

Hornby 67 undergoing renumbering. Not the easiest of jobs, the full gold band has been resprayed, and it's a bit of a job to get the new decals to sit over the bodyside ribs.

That Crompton looks rather nice as well.

Beasts aren't they? Just picked another one up, (later build), that will be getting done in large logo. Can never have enough....

Superb isn't it? It's a Bachmann Brassworks 08, painted and with a full detailing kit added by a very talented Gentleman. Not myself! My job is to bring it to life with lights and sound, a job I am really looking forwards to. A very special locomotive indeed.

In other news, a big thank you to Steve at Railtec for my latest supply of many many decals. With still more to follow. (Sorry Steve :locomotive: )

And I have started work on my rather large Whistler. Initial things done have been toning down the underframe with a basic frame dirt colour (lots more to do here), repainted the nose ends as they were way too orangey for my liking, removal of 2 of the cabside arrows, and gloss varnishing the bodysides ready for transfers. The ever brilliant Steve at Riltec has just done me some Gateshead crests, can't wait to get them on!

Deep breath, needed to be brave today......

This is the first stage of converting a couple of beastly Heljan 37's into Large logo Scottish monsters. Off with the buffers and skirts.

And yet another large beast, my 40057. A bit more early weathering work, grilles dirtied, and the tank/ outer bogie areas have been 'oiled' as per the prototype picture. These will get a varnish sheen next to simulate gunky oil.

Nice to see a 7mm Class 26 being modelled so I thought you may be interested in the work I've carried out on the locos for our club layout.

The locos being modelled are 26038, 26041 and 27025.

For the two 26s we obtained a pre production example from Heljan and a spare bodyshell and bare chassis block from Howes. As on our layout the locos are only required to haul a maximum of three coaches we didn't consider traction would be a problem so one of the powered bogies was removed from the complete loco and placed in the spare chassis. For the other (trailing) bogie in each loco we used etched bogie frames from PRMRP fitted with Heljan bogie sideframes obtained as spares from Howes.

As we now had only one motor in each loco, initial trials were carried out fitting them with basic cheapo Bachmann decoders and they worked fine. Subsequently we have now installed "standard" Loksound decoders from Legomanbiffo and again they work fine with no sign of the decoder being overloaded. To install the decoders the complete Heljan PCB was removed along with the lights and an eight pin prewired decoder socket from Digitains installed so then the decoders could just be plugged in in the normal manner. Given we had plenty of room (one big advantage of 7mm modelling!) connections to the pickups were simply made with chocolate block connectors and a 40mm x 28 mm speaker from DC Kits installed in  a homemade enclosure. They sound fantastic!

Hopefully the photos below will make it all much clearer.

The chassis for 27025 has received similar treatment, the bodyshell being converted from a Heljan Class 33 by my good friend Sean.

As a result each of these locos, fully detailed and painted stand us at about £200 (less the sound decoder but these have "only" cost £100 instead of nearly £200 for the XL versions).
