RMweb Premium Popular Post Sasquatch Posted March 28, 2013 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 28, 2013 (edited) After meeting Mrs. Sasquatch I found myself in Oregon and one of the benefits here is space (there’s lots of it), I wasted no time in building Dunster and wanted to exhibit it at the Rouge Valley Annual Model Railroad show back in 2008. As an immigrant with pending status I also had plenty of time. Update,11 Feb.2016: Now I've got more time seeing as we're settled in our fab new house, Dunster is to be housed in a nice cozy attic room and I find myself with more space. So I'm planning on extending the layout on to Minehead and will include Crowcombe Heathfield. I'll draw up the new plan and post corresponding links here on this post as progress is made. GWR branch lines must fall into every modeler’s category of “Just crying out to be modeled” my collection of train paraphernalia included plenty of GWR kits & bits including the Hornby Dunster station and signal box kits..Thus Dunster was conceived. I designed the layout as a test bed for such things as live frogs, working signals and a base board connection system I’d had rattling around in the old grey matter for years. The layout had originally 8 boards 3scenic, 3 fiddle yard and 2 ends. It is end to end but bent around on its self to form a roundy roundy because of space and for ease of operation (if I feel the urge to explore the vendors at shows and have to leave someone less educated in my somewhat eccentric OO engineering in charge). Two years ago I built Goathland, which uses the same fiddle yard as Dunster but with one 4 foot board extra, so the natural progression last year was to add one more 4 foot scenic board to Dunster (serial layout builder!) Mrs’ Sasquatch excelled herself once again with her beautiful scenery producing a small copse and a very convincing nursery. All signals, ground dolls etc. are lit up and fully operational, the crossing gates have been automated and there is an uncoupling system (see my blog). Buildings are wills products. Enjoy the images and questions always welcome. Edited October 1, 2021 by Sasquatch 93 lame ducks
RMweb Premium Tim Dubya Posted March 28, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 28, 2013 Great to see Dunster in model form and nice it looks too. We spend a week every year at Dunster Beach so it's good to see our "local" station on here, do you have a trackplan? Cheers Tim
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted March 28, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 28, 2013 (edited) Here's a quick sketch up of the plan as I believe the track (at least) existed in GWR days. Note the scenic sections beyond the confines of railway property are fictitious! Edited March 28, 2013 by Sasquatch

RailWest
The line from Dunster to Minehead was originally single-track. It was doubled west of the station level-crossing, and the (2nd) signal-box opened, in 1934. In 1966 the signal-box at Minehead was closed , after which the double-track was operated as two seperate single lines. The bracket Down Starting signal adjacent to the SB dates only from 1966, having previously been a single arm on a straight post. If for your model you are going to use the Up side of the double-track simply as a siding, then I would suggest that the bracket would have only a shunt disc reading in to it.
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted March 29, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 29, 2013 (edited) Thank you for the info on the double track and signaling. My signals are mounted on removable blocks so I will construct a single post signal and swap them when needed. Do you know if this post was tubular or square? I,ve also been looking for info on the signaling and box at Minehead. This just might is going to be my next project, replace the fiddle yard with a scaled down version of Minehead! RMweb Premium Popular Post Sasquatch Posted March 29, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted March 29, 2013 A good search through some SD cards has yielded a result if only a poor one. These images were taken 4 years ago with Mrs Sasquatches pocket canon. Not many trains in them for some reason but they show some layout features quite well. The two ground signals are by ratio and mounted on thier N scale signal control kit. New discs were made from 2 pieces of punched 10 thou plastic with sweet wrapper sandwiched for the lenes. Small prairie on a down parcels. (Bachmann 45xx and Kirk monster) Great scenic work by Mrs Sasquatch Inspectors down from Padington maybe.......
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted March 29, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 29, 2013 Brain wave at midnight........ I can make new end boards with an incline at the Minehead end of say 2 inches and a decline at the other end then run the Taunton bound trains under Minehead. This will give 18 feet length and 27inches width......... hummmmm...... There would have to be a 180 degree bend of course!
RailWest
If you are going to model any station on the Minehead line, then I would strongly recommend that you study the definitive histiory of the line: "The Minehead Branch 1848-1971" by Ian Coleby, pub Lightmoor Press 2006. There will be enough plans, drawings and photographs to give you probably all the info that you need. To answer your specific question, the Down Starting signal (25) was a tubular post signal on the RH side of the line (facing Down trains) directly in front of the signal-box.

BG John
Stunning layout!! I've a photo of a model I built of Dunster market - if you're interested Sasquatch, I can put it up for you. Cheers. Allan. You may need this. According to the West Somerset Railway Facebook page this morning, there's a plan to move Dunster station and the market closer together. It may be something to do with the date though!
allan downes
I always felt that I built this way out of proportion therefore not one of my favourites, but here it is anyway - Dunster Market?
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted April 2, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 2, 2013 (edited) Thats great! Not over scale at all. I like the way that the Austin A30 places the model some where between 1951 and 2013! My best friends mum still potters pottered about in hers for years!! Edit. R.I.P. Sally. RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted June 24, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 24, 2013 (edited) Dunster was our first layout done in 2009 I beleive. It has had some serious revamping in the tree department. Learned some tricks from Don at the Medford Model Railway Club & then incorperated some new ideas of my own to create Dunsters new trees. You can see in this video that the old trees are pretty bla. Check out the fencing in this video. Mr. Sasquatch wanted it along the track but didn't want to spend that much money. So I said why not use match sticks! Drill holes in them, paint & then thread beading wire through them! It was a real hit at the train show. The beading wire gives the fencing a convincing cable wire look to them. Here are two videos from patrons at the show. In this video Mr. Sasquatch devised an plan and created his own moving gates. Don't ask me how its over my head! Especially when he explains it to me. Here are some photos of the new additions to Dunster. New trees, as you can see in this first photo and then a small house & greenhouse/nursery. I'll try to get some videos on here of the new Dunster soon.
