Most normal people confine themselves to ever so politely (she says hopefully) pointing out errors in continuity on your layout, pointing out glaring mistakes on your layout, advising you of where to get essential modelling items (to correct said glaring mistakes) for your layout.........and so what do our friends find fascinating?...... The fact we only showed a work bench half finished..........with it's legs in the air (Julian.........don't you dare!!!!!!!)

med_gallery_17883_2781_620128.jpg0123

Said workbench nailed ,skrewed, not glued,  and on it's feet, in it's new permeant home, with the airbrush extractor and a hole in the wall all sorted. Technically one half for me and one half for someone else......he'll be lucky I like to spread out..............I am always being asked / told to move my essential modelling items..........

med_gallery_17883_2781_868437.jpg0124

The new view, where a certain person bought a thumping big 3 tonne digger right up to the walls to tidy the area, although he was actually amazing getting within in inches if not mm of lovely walls I think i did have a few extra grey hairs after!!!!! Second Doberman on guard. The concrete was pulled out of the area immediately in front of you some is now under the soil and some has been removed to make a hard standing when we he has the chance to play with the digger again. THIS is a man who really knows how to model!!!!

med_gallery_17883_2781_144169.jpg0122

Circular saw in wait for any potential thieves.................if they can get past Dobermans, double glazing (yes really in the garage) security measures, and are willing to take on husband. I'd rather deal with a shark in a feeding frenzy than mess with his trains!!!!!! The drill is probably for the eyes  :triniti:  :butcher:  :scared:

So, are we now all happy with the work bench, which is not going to be stained or varnished - because once I thought about it, it will undoubtably get a good spraying from the airbrush  :sarcastichand:

Off the cuff, no prettying up, the opposite in fact.......latest run around.......no points for continuity errors ....we don't have a big enough thread!!!!!

I wasn't in the vicinity when Kal took this - otherwise at 3.54 minutes there would have been one almighty SCREAM!!!!!!

I know he HAS to do it, we have agreed, and we will make it more prototypical when it occurs........I have even started tearing up platforms at one end then temporarily added some greyed cork until a full overhaul, ho hummmm. Hillside and trees will appear....

So everyone who up to now has been too polite to say what is wrong here, e.g. stone platforms not brick, where's the lights (in the drawer!) just go on point them all out NOW. All photographs appertaining to the sleeping coaches, and not already on silky_jacks thread should uploaded asap. Other Goathland aspects similarly. Holiday snaps welcome.

I'd never think of you as ineffectual, and Iain knows I was teasing him, plus if you have seen me with a gun, you'd know I am not safe behind a dart (hit one lad in the foot and another ducked - just in time) I'd most likely shoot my foot, before I worked out how to use the safety catch!!!

Did you notice I pmed you?

Hogwarts castle is indeed DCCed no sound though......I doubt Kal will do it for the poor little oddity anyway.

Cheers. Before we go through to the other loft, we need to a. sort it out, lift the rafters heights / floorboards / insulation / plasterboard. We have removed an old cold water tank, and have a good amount of floorboards in place. b. be certain what stays in the first loft and what moves to the new loft, hence Kal doing an over haul, luckily all his ideas for this are holding water...so we slowly follow the plan.  Which includes sorting the garage for long term usage. He made some stools. The table is tall enough to stand to and the stolos allow you to sit and work as well.

Due to hot weather and rain (grass needs cutting which takes a long time) time in loft is reduced even with veluxs and fans it is not inviting,

My Dad's recent collapse (during the last heatwave), he is much better but goes back to hospital next week for an overhaul, hopefully he will be good for a while after that. After an afternoon in A+E I have some advice, drink more than usual in hot weather! Don't run around like an idiot (My dad didn't do this but a lot of youngsters were in A+E having played footie etc during the heatwave, and then collapsed!!!)

I am not completely dossing you understand, I am looking at my scratch build, and using the elevations to slowly make a 3d model.

The building is quite complicated, twisting and turning, so I need to box parts for it to stand up, plus I am only scribing windows at present, later it will be evergreen and etching, but at present I want to get my head around all the features. Iain Robinson and Allan Downes did say start simple and choose a little square cottage, I do now see their point. But the project is quite fascinating. I am slowly adapting ideas (I am sure it will turn out other people already tried them) and still have to tackle the roof which is mostly thatched. I'll go take some pictures. I have a little extension coming along. I'll be back.......

update, a long way to go.........

med_gallery_17883_2781_13877.jpg0162

main north, 30 thou, cut and painted

to be thatched, right hand side corner element still to be made

med_gallery_17883_2781_89447.jpg0163

part of west and south, 30 thou cut and painted , and some Wills pan tiles

to be thatched, left hand side of elevation still being made

med_gallery_17883_2781_1049825.jpg0164

part of west, 30 thou cut and painted, some Wills pan tiles

still making elevation parts, and to be thatched, left hand side still neeing to be made - a window drawn flat needs to change to 3D.

med_gallery_17883_2781_1276375.jpg0165

north extension, 30 thous cut and painted and Wills pan tiles

med_gallery_17883_2781_248973.jpg0166

extension, 30 thou cut painted and Wills pan tiles

med_gallery_17883_2781_66112.jpg0167

north and part of west, 30 thou cut and painted, Wills pan tiles

main to be thatched, part of west still to be sorted

med_gallery_17883_2781_433664.jpg0168

north main and extension with Willa pan tiles

main to be thatched, chimeny on main still to be manufactured

med_gallery_17883_2781_1512153.jpg0169

south, 30 thou cut and painted

main to be thatched, extra chimneys still to be added, sides of loft windows still to be constructed, a 30 thou roof to be topped probably by DAS for the thatch.

Criticism is welcome, and ideas also welcome, contacts for etched windows etc. I expect evergreen plastic will be used as well / instead, as I progress the project.

The building is a trial run cut with scissors, not measured and knifed. The windows scribed and painted for initial impressions.

Hi Jaz,

Building looks great!  :good:

Personally I think Plumbers Hemp makes good thatch which I've used, it also makes good long grass and corn fields and it's easily available from a DIY shop or B&Q.

Another thing which has been used to great effect is female blond hair (maybe one of the reasons I don't have a girlfriend LOL) which I believe also makes good thatch and tends to give a finer result although it's not as easily obtained, but if you know anyone with long blond hair it maybe worth a try.... just say: Hi can I give you a free hair cut? I need some thatch for a house I'm building :mosking:

Etched windows can be bought from a number of different places but I mainly depends on what style your looking for, Brassmasters having the best range in my opinion.

Cheers, Reece

Hi Jaz,

Just caught up with this thread, I've been a bit busy!

Your plans for extending sound awesome, and I like your bench and the room you have to work in. It's mostly the kitchen table for me :)

The building is looking great, will it be a stone finish or rendered?

Excellent stuff as always,

Al

Theres' a serious lack of drainpipes, can anyone suggest any? I'll search here as well.

RSLR

Thank you, I will check out the plumbers hemp, being easily available means I will definitely try this one as well as the DAS (I am concerned the DAS might be heavy).

Talking of hair, does anyone know if horse hair has been tried? I might be able to persuade an owner to chop a horse tail or two. Dyeing then being an option, although fiddly. Also has anyone tried the Hornby grasses?

I don't think I have seen brassmasters as a choice before, although there are several I have seen, I'll check this one out, I'll search this too, Never having bought any before, a pointer that different styles a bound will help the search than you very much. :)

Interesting kit on your layout, and like your latest drawings.

acg_mr

Hi, been checking on your thread ;) looking good, very interesting watching your build. Your pictures are very useful. Although at the moment you can see I am NOT follwing the advice yet, I am getting the 3d shape to work, then once it is up and running fine tuning. This building will be rendered. I will put up some pictures of the real thing soon. but you can google it Ye Olde White Horse at Spalding. We have the same trouble making time at the moment. :)

That is a good sized building you have there. I may have missed it but what will its purpose be? Looking forward to seeing it develop.

Would this be any good for thatch?

The britfarmer,

I am definitely investigating the modelling grass, although I think it will cost far too much for this size of building.

ferriesdover

dt I like the hour of wolves, I did the same thatch search yesterday (before you did same....great mind think alike.....) and got distracted by the 28mm figures. Love his pirate. I think I will later need a building where you can see the wood and a hole. Meantime am tempted to search for long hair fur coat, am not donating my own!!! Oh must go post pictures for LF&T he's not seen the latest batch yet.

I like the plan and shape of the building very much. It's like one of those lovely Tudor manor farms...and I shall be looking forward to seeing it progress.  One thing I'll say, and this is meant constructively, is that if you look at the thatch...Norfolk reed or longstraw...it is the ends of the straw/reeds that you see all over the roof, not the length of the stalks...so if you make the thatch with hemp or hair, whatever, you have to do it as the real thatchers do....like Roye England did. I don't really have the cohones to do that unless somebody is paying me a lot of money, but I can see you pulling it off with your obvious determination. It's going to be great!

cheers,

Iain

dt,

That cat fur is staying firmly in my wardrobe!!!! It is amazingly warm. Hey just 'cos for ONCE I beat YOU to some cool research,

ps. don't watch the first video you might end up committing suicide if you can't turn it off .......

I want LF&T to be happy with the result, and I did promise to try and make the thatch as realistic as I can. I expect SEVERAL attempts...although not of the whole thing!!!!! Where are RJ and JW when you need them. :scratchhead:

Thank you Iain,

having done the easier elevations, I am now onto getting it to all fit together. Some are proving more difficult than others, and to get certain elevations that are flat correctly 3D is keeping me occupied. I still have a glass roof, and some strange angles to investigate. Window panes are not always flat or at 90 degree angles, neither are walls.

The biggest problem is lack of appropriately correct modelling bits. Having only done one Dapol building, which had all the appropriate parts, I don't have a bundle of left overs in order to attack this. Our one major modelling job so far was the tunnels. The pantiles were a spntaneous oooh love them...but I should have bought two, and the shop I bought them from is downsizing and does not have more at present.

You know while were on the subject and due to lack of pictures because the loft is too hot, I might just roll them out. My first kit build, and it was chosen as a group build cos it was cheap and been around for ever and as such is not upto the modern quality stuff available. However, it was a useful learning curve, now be aware laughing too hard can give you a hernia!!!!!. To avoid adding this to my gallery I add a link. Remember these started May 2013!

Links only, warning some of this winks may result in serious wincing........

8722132658_e05523494c_c.jpg

I had bought a second Dapol building, opened it looked at the first elements, and it got consigned to the bin, well rescued and poppped to one side as I realised it was not going to improve my skills.

Having joined RMweb full time May 26th and then stumbled across some great threads, especial Robinson and Downes..Anything |You Can Do ..I Can Do Better. I hope I have improved conceptually, I just need to put everything into some creditable practise.  But members of our last forum had already played a part in us looking at things. Plus provided a number of really good ideas, that will be incorporated in this build......and if all else fails I might run off to a 28mm scale forum.... :jester:

Anyway after the light relief, I am off to conquer the 3D issues with Ye Olde White Horse.....After all this I will definitely try a nice simple little cottage.............probably in the outer Hebrides.......

Friends? Ah....I did wonder ......I thought they were part of an assassination team.......  :triniti:

No your right, they were friends, the type who care enough to point out where you really need to improve.....without such people Kal and I would still own a Day-Glo green scenic layout.

Talking of which, criticism is welcome on this thread, and anyone there who looks at anything and thinks this could be done better if you only you improved it by doing xxxxxxxxx.......please type that thought here on AV. Oh and you do not have to have a great layout to give advice. Two of the most helpful people I have come across did not have their own layout on our last forum, and that did not stop them being full of very helpful ideas. Help is help, and always welcome.

On the subject of Ye Olde White Horse, you would not believe how much cutting has occurred in order to make one small piece of roofing. One initial sheet for the area is now in 6 pieces, plus I had to make 4 inserts.....I do believe I know why Mr Allan Downes does so many similar buildings.......because once you have put all the effort in to getting just one building right you are not going to waste it, so you repeat it several times for good measure. I think a terraced house might be a good next project!!!!

Anyway, I had an initial sized flat sheet, realised it was easier to cut that piece to make the roof lines that goes over the windows, 4 cuts later 5 pieces, plus one more cut to line the lot up against afterwards. (your not meant to follow or understand this so don't worry if you don't) Then I removed a bit for the chimney, which was useful for balancing said roof on a 30 thou piece of plastic on its edge. Then I realised I needed the side of the windows, and thought I need the height of the windows x the length of the roofline = a rectangle, which I need to halve into two long triangles, then when I checked that I realise that the triangles don't allow for the windows being perpendicular! So I had to measure and chop a bit x four for each window side. Then I had to glue the whole lot and allow for the fitting!!! About then being the Indian Deity  Vishnu with multiple hands would have been useful. A quick test while the plastic was not completely set and some easing urgently followed. Does use of same glue help undo it??? I will probably need to trim a bit and need to ensure the roof line of the windows lie on the window and not behind it...................I think I am actually glad I have to thatch this lot it..... will help hide a lot of bodging!!!!!!!!!

med_gallery_17883_2781_662877.jpg

very wobbly roof

med_gallery_17883_2781_696997.jpg

'straight' edge for support and ridge line, with a nip for the chimney

med_gallery_17883_2781_525394.jpg

the nip on the chimney allowing a balancing act until glued, roof is on workbench to dry properly at present, this only represents an 1.8th of the over all roofing, 2/8s are already on the extension. I know the windows look awful, but until I am certain I have the idea working I am not spending time or money making pretty windows. If the roof works....nice windows will ensue, well maybe not immediately they will follow once the thatching starts to look like something other than my imagination or the trials of a 5 year old with a towel and some papermache!!!!

Still the good news? I am still enjoying myself, and the model is in no danger of being stamped on or thrown into the bin........... :sungum:       although butchering continues    :butcher:

still wet and floppy, but balanced for the photograph. I think this idea is a goer. I expect to take this idea around more segments of the roof, as the build progresses. I need to sort the chimneys asap so I can press them in the DAS while wet. If it photographs well I might make stick on windows rather than dismantle and do them properly. Am waiting to see it the 'thatch' stays intact as it dries!!! I didn't PVA it on..............
