RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted December 11, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 11, 2013 The people will repay study - did we really look like that all those years ago? Not necessarily. I know the intended subject is the motive power but look into the detail. What lurks behind the four stack shunt discs? Is it some sort of ground slot? I have reason to believe some of these discs were controlled by two boxes. http://www.flickr.com/photos/llangollen_signalman/5867028164/in/photostream/ I think we are looking at 20/22/26 this would have been 4 stack at one time, and slotted with Skipton Station South through both Down Main and Back Platform Line. As proved by the next photo .... http://www.flickr.com/photos/llangollen_signalman/5867028928/in/photostream/lightbox/ A totally magnificent picture there DaveF. David Yes that helps. Other thing's to note... a half buried battery box, the disc signal base looks capable of holding six weight bars and i can now see weight bar on the ground slot which now leads me toward this may be some sort of weighted detector also. RMweb Gold DaveF Posted December 15, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 15, 2013 In the summer of 1968 my parents moved back to Nottinghamshire, in the early autumn I moved to Manchester to become a student, so the photo locations changed. Today's photos take us to Cadeby, the home of Rev E (Teddy) Boston who as well as a large Great Western model railway (Olton Priors) and a less well known model based on the Southwold Railway using 12mm gauge track had a 2' gauge railway around three sides of the Rectory garden. He also owned an Aveling and Porter steam roller (Thistledown) and a Foster traction engine (Fiery Elias). I was fortunate in being allowed to drive them from time to time. One of the things I will always remember was taking Fiery Elias through Hinckley on a Friday tea time. Mum and Dad had known Teddy at Cambridge when he and Dad were undergraduates and had remained in touch so we quite often used to visit him, sometimes on his open days, at other times just to see him and run the model railway. We only took photos on his open days to respect his privacy and always asked Teddy for permission first even though he was a good friend. Jack
Excellent pictures! I do like Teddy Boston's biography, a very interesting read. Sadly rectory gardens arn't what they used to be though ... I'd struggle to get an O gauge loop into ours, let alone a 2' one!!!

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted December 17, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 17, 2013 (edited) A bumper set this evening. In August 1968 I visited Crich, mainly to see the Prague tram which had recently arrived. This tram produced a lot of publicity for the Crich Tramway museum as it managed to leave Prague just before the clampdown in the summer of 1968. Back to "proper" railways tomorrow. Peter Kazmierczak
I especially like the one taken at Hopton David. So evocative. Interesting to see the track in situ over a year after closure. Hopton had, to me at any rate, the feel of standing on top of the world as you could see for miles towards the Trent Valley. RMweb Gold ikks Posted December 20, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 20, 2013 Wonderful stuff Dave, although my interest in railways declined considerably with the dieselisation/electrification of the London Midland Region, I still travelled by train on journeys of any diatance and despite my (self perceived!!) indifference to the motive power, once on that train the exitement came back. Everything was still there to be observed and taken in, so thanks for helping to relive those memories. Rgds.........Mike

Joe MCMLXI
Dave, thank you for the fantastic collection of photo's you're sharing.... especially the Peak Line ones on posts #1,#6 & #14. Having experienced a footplate ride through Berwyn Tunnel on the llangollen line, the journey up the Peak line on a heavy mineral train must of been hell! Especially on the Banker! My mum used to catch the 'stopper' at Cressbrook, on her way to working in Buxton and she commented on how smokey the coaches got if the window ventilators weren't shut! Please keep posting! regards - Joe
NXEA!
Those shots of the 81 with the 76 just in the background and the 85 and the 506 EMU are bloody marvellous! I don't know about anyone else, but I don't automatically put/picture 76's alongside 81's/85's for example, when of course they rubbed shoulders everyday for years, so these photographs are a good reminder. Brilliant stuff, keep 'em coming!
