Hi all,

I'd like to thank each and every one of you who have viewed, replied, rated and followed my work throughout 2015. Have yourselves an excellent festive break, and I hope Santa brings those railway goodies you've wished for! ;)

Cheers all! :)

Thanks,

Jack.

Some suitably snowy pics on both of my layouts:

And here was I hoping for some 4mm snowmen  :D

Haha I may give it a go next year!

Well, Santa and co have brought me a pair of Bachy intermodals and Safmarine containers, a DRS 37405, and a very hard to find 150204, with sound no less! :D

Very happy bunny!

Enjoy the day!

Jack.

Snow scene looks spot on Jack!!!

Thanks Neil! :)

Further to my last post about Crimbo prezzies, Santa also brought me a Balfour Beatty Sentinel from Hornby. It's already been earmarked to become one of Ribble Rail's machines, and to have extra pickups. This week I've detailed fully 37405, and it looks a beast! Just need to paint some details then I'll show what's been done.

Finally, happy new year to all! My resolution is to finish projects and not start any new ones...pfft like that's gonna happen! :nono:

Thanks,

Jack.

Looking forward to a "heavyweight" Sentinel..... thicker buffer beams, shortened fuel tank, air compressor box - I have a Judith Edge kit that was destined to become a RSR Sentinel, but like lots of other things, it is less of a priority

Happy New Year Jack.

Cheers Mick, same to you and yours! ;)

Yes I've researched the prototypes and they are certainly going to be a challenge, but hopefully I'll be able to get up close to them soon as I may or may not have decided to become a volunteer.... :D

Happy new year to all who've viewed my thread(s) too!

Thanks,

Jack.

So back to some projects now 2016 is in full swing! :D

Before the festivities I did a bit more on the MXA. Firstly I tidied up the solebars after I sanded them down, then glued them on to the chassis. The old brackets that remained were cut off and some new, more substantial ones that support the main body were added from plastic strip:

post-21664-0-67355000-1451676974_thumb.jpeg

This project has now been sidelined for a bit as there are more pressing ones on the bench, and I'm not spraying DBS red for one wagon, so I'll wait until I've got another red thing on the go.

Other news, the RTOV has progressed with the filling of windows using plastic blanks, the addition of a grille from Evergreen 4031 clapboard, and the fiting of pickups on the bogies using phosphor bronze strip:

post-21664-0-81107600-1451677012_thumb.jpeg

And the latest addition, 37405. For this, I did quite a lot. Firstly, as is customary with any new DRS engine it received tyre slips. Then, on inspection of the buffers, I noticed Bachmann had decided to set them back into the bufferbeam, presumably for coupling clearance or something, so they didn't look long enough in my opinion. After chewing on it over night, I decided to do something. So I cut off the existing buffers, made new shanks from plastic tube and glued the original heads/shafts in...

post-21664-0-48989000-1451677078_thumb.jpeg

Next were the snowploughs. I filed around the edges and painted the backs black to give the impression of a thinner plough, and added two strips of plastic to mount them on to the bufferbeam. The usual pipes then followed, but I had to heat with a soldering iron, then bend the originals to get them to look like the real things. The ETS cables are elastic threads, and the left hand socket on the nose was filed down to the correct round shape. Everything was finally painted:

To finish, here's a photo of all the stock I've been given in the past month. The voyager, flats and tanks don't count...

Thanks for reading it all, I hope it may be of some use to someone!

Thanks,

Jack.

Evening...

Now, the RTOV. I really need to crack on with this because 977868 is waiting to be painted along with this, so it'll now be worked on with my full (however small span of) attention. Tonight I've had a fiddle with the bogies, because the Replica Railways replacements rely on not just the central clip, but also two small lugs that the chassis rests on. So some supports made of small pieces of plasticard were fashioned, and a washer made to bring the coach to the correct ride height:

post-21664-0-88189800-1451753655_thumb.jpeg

And this is how it looks. The wires will be run to the luggage/guard's compartment(s), and the electrickery for the lights will be in there...

More soon! :D

  • 2 months later...

Evening all! I'm still alive!

Firstly, apologies for the three month gap! Time is at a premium with exams on the horizon, and whilst I have been doing some bits and bobs, I've been forgetting to update the thread!

So, some projects have been finished, some started, some even started and finished!

To begin, I've finished the DRS 08, by painting it (hand brushed Humbrol 104 and black), transfers (Railtec DRS numbers, Replica data panels and warning flashes) and a weathering from hand brushing and wiping with a cotton bud, using 'roof dirt' from Railmatch. Then a coat of Matt RM varnish was applied, again by brush. To finish, a cab light was added that has been connected to the positive common output, and both the front and rear negative outputs, so when F0 is on, the cab light is, no matter which direction...

post-21664-0-81007500-1458939448_thumb.jpeg

Next up is a DRS escort coach. This is half of the twin set that run with the 16 axle MoD flask wagons, and I've only finished one for now, the other is part finished. I made end blanking plates for the gangways, as per the real thing, from plasticard, then glued these in place. A window was then added from clear sheet, and a window frame made from paper, carefully cut with various knives and hole punches! This was then painted with Humbol 15. I then weathered the roof by brushing on Humbrol 32 (grey), and streaking it down and off with a cotton bud soaked in thinners. A full complement of bufferbeam pipes, coupling hook, steps (plastic strip and brass etch offcuts) were added, and the buffers were lengthened with brass rod. Next I installed a flashing tail lamp, with a switch underneath, and a piece of 1.5mm optic fibre was routed through and connected to a scale lamp at one end, and an LED connected to the circuitry at the other:

post-21664-0-84202800-1458939456_thumb.jpeg

And a pic with suitable traction...

post-21664-0-39274400-1458939514_thumb.jpeg

I then found that I had at least 2 electric locos in my spares drawer, both of which could feature on current layouts, being dragged 'dead', one of which was a 'Dyson' (Class 92). To allow this, the gear that connects the gear train to the motor was removed, but taped inside the loco to be refitted should I make a layout with 'knitting'. The pickups were also removed to prevent short circuits and 'frying', as the loco isn't DCC fitted yet. To finish, I fitted a front valance under the bufferbeam and a screw link coupling (Hornby spare), then painted the edges of the light inserts black to represent the noticeable seal on the real things...and now it's ready to be dragged about! :senile:

post-21664-0-16695300-1458939468_thumb.jpeg

There's more to come, but I've had enough typing for one post, and the post would be mammoth if I continued!

Thanks for sticking with me, and apologies for the dodgy pics, I may get some better ones tomorrow.

Thanks,

Jack. :)

Just had a look at your ESSO TTA wagons and I must say they are very good, you have achieved a very realistic and neat finish.

Your other projects are very impressive too, your abilities are far higher than mine when I was your age!

Ill be following your future projects with much interest,

Lewis

Evening!

Firstly I'd like to thank everyone who has rated or commented, it really does spur me on no end, especially with time being so elusive right now!

Some more previously finished projects...first 70003 which has just been weathered and varnished by hand brushing:

post-21664-0-60307900-1460321556_thumb.jpeg

Next the Network Rail generator, which has had the chassis weathered by airbrush and the rest by hand brushing both RM 'roof dirt' and Humbrol 32 dark grey:

post-21664-0-36119600-1460321562_thumb.jpeg

Now to the Canadian 67, which has been airbrush weathered and hand brush varnished, but has also had modifications to the lights. This entails removing the top light at the no.2 end and blacking out the headlight to just give either two markers or reds, which is more prototypical for the second end. I've also rewired the underneath switch so it doesn't change from N/D headlight but turns the no.2 end tail lights off or on now, and the front headlight is permanently on the night setting, instead of day because SOMEONE messed up the sides! :D

Also 67017 has been finished, a long term project which I started 8 years ago! :O Both the skips have been given airbrush weathering and hand brushed varnish:

post-21664-0-91634100-1460321599_thumb.jpeg

And now to 37406. I'll start by updating the situation with the other 37 on the bench...after changing my plans to make 37419 because of the Bachmann release of 37405, which I got for Crimbo, I've decided to make it 37401 MQS in LL blue instead. This meant the buffers on the donor model were wrong, but luckily enough '406 has the class 60 type buffers and 401 has the oval ones, so a quick swap was in order!

post-21664-0-24458200-1460321589_thumb.jpeg

Then I turned to detailing the loco up. However, in trying to retrieve the cab light curcuitboard, I accidentally broke it at the number one end, so this was swapped for the good one at the number 2 end, so now only one works! More prototypical I suppose! I wrapped it in yellow Tamiya tape too to dull down the bright white a tad. Next I added snowploughs by using the supplied Bachmann ones, but cutting off the coupling attachment and making some brackets out of strips of plastic and gluing them in place behind the middle 'plough. The backs were painted black too to give the effect of a thinner snowplough. An assortment of pipes and couplings were added at this stage, and new aerials were fashioned from thin wire. I also drilled out the horns and added some missing lamp brackets from ViTrains parts. Once the glue had dried, everything was painted in respective colours, including the driver, and a wire coupling bar added at the number 2 end. The ETS cables haven't been added yet, but that's it for now until I do another batch of weathering...

No.1 end...

post-21664-0-62082000-1460321542_thumb.jpeg

And no.2:

post-21664-0-04497900-1460321550_thumb.jpeg

That's yer lot for tonight! There still a couple of previous projects to go over but I'm nearly caught up!

Thanks,

Jack.

Hi Ali,

The wire I use is actually floristry wire that I've nicked off my mum, as she used to do flower arranging but doesn't do it that often now. It's about 0.6mm in diameter and is copper wire coated in black plastic. Any wire will do, but you have to get the right balance of strength to pull a rake of wagons vs how visible it is, as the more discreet the better. Stiffer thinner wire would be better I think, I may have to find some...

Thanks,

Jack.

Hi jack. some nice work there . The class 67's  where made in spain .

Thanks and I know, but 67018 carries a special maple leaf livery and name which was to credit the outgoing manager of DB, Keith Heller. Sorry if I confused matters!

Thanks,

Jack.

Hi WCML100,

Thanks for the compliments and here's how I did it...

I created a hole in the bufferbeam and chassis with a hacksaw, as seen in the below picture. This was big enough to accept a Kadee draft box and Kadee (very sorry but I've no idea about the number, just that it was a pack of 4 and came with draft boxes!)

post-21664-0-47785900-1461001340_thumb.jpeg

The box has a couple of small squares of styrene glued to it with holes drilled through to accept a piece of wire, which is glued behind the bufferbeam on some more scraps of styrene strip. I've also glued a tiny magnet on the box and another on a piece of strip to keep the box down when it's hauling a train, as I found it tended to flick up when it encountered and bumps. Pictures will explain much better than me!

post-21664-0-20310600-1461001356_thumb.jpeg

The Pendolino simply has a hole cut in the front (done with various drills and sharp implements), and another Kadee box glued in at the right height:

post-21664-0-76321300-1461001365_thumb.jpeg

(The wire is so it can be hauled by a tension lock fitted loco...my other 57 will receive the right height of Kadee in due course!)

And a couple of pics of the modified lights, which were covered some pages back...

post-21664-0-88554400-1461001380_thumb.jpeg

Finally, to break the red, white and silver deluge, here's some recently finished EWS project sat on 'Tighte End Yard' (I've been building legs for this today and yesterday...more soon when I'm done)

Hope some of that helped! Once again many thanks people for all the ratings and comments! :)

Keep on modelling!

Jack.
