  1. this is argyle st. in glasgow looking east - timothy white's is on the corner of what's now st.enoch square, the hotel is out of shot to the right think this is looking down buchanan st., glasgow from cathedral street think this might be the view to left of the previous shot, in which case that's glasgow queen st. station in the background
  2. I think that may have been in a c.j. Marsden book, possibly "SR emus 1898-1948" or similar. Reference was made to the fact that the test runs were suspended if it rained as the cars weren't fitted with windscreen wipers!
  3. D9018 shot is interesting - 1A16 in 1967 was the down "flying scotsman" Doesn't seem to have any mk2 coaches (unless it had FKs on the far end), the b/g mk1s seem to have the early small numbers and there's at least one maroon coach in the rake (restaurant car, possibly an RU judging by underframe detail)
  4. that would probably be D6580, the first of what would become cl.33/1, although at that time it didn't have buckeyes/rubbing plates photo of the 6TC: http://www.flickr.com/photos/12a_kingmoor_klickr/6351961532/ info on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SR_Class_6Pul#6-TC there was also a 7TC unit, number 701 which wasn't really a proper TC set - despite being ex-BIL/SUB vehicles, it could only be hauled, there being no p-p jumpers i don't know if this was ever used on the belle after its use on the oxted line ended? SEMG link: http://www.semgonline.com/coach/900.html
  5. plasticard on the steps could be a bit finer and the cabinet's a bit 2D, but nice weathering on the roofs http://www.flickr.com/photos/96859208@N07/10873268055/in/photostream/
  6. great pic andy - i never realised these units had 1st. class (and quite a bit too!)
  7. don't know about the 505s, but at least one cl. 506 received wrap-round ends in early blue unit 04, with M59604M and M59404M (presumably the trailer was M59504M?) http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertcwp/2154552754/in/set-72157607267122063 http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertcwp/2153759309/in/set-72157607267122063/
  8. great pic Michael - the ScR was fond of mix'n'match formations in the 70s. quite often in a mix of liveries too. maybe not so much when unit numbers came in, but by the 90s it was lash together anything that was left and still working
  9. might be more to do with having an emergency brake valve and gauge with which a brake test is carried out before the split portion can start its journey?
  10. i think there was often some sort of brake vehicle kept here to attach to the edinburgh portion of a train from down south. IIRC there was an early morning postal/parcels service from Edinburgh which consisted solely of the brake coach
  11. j. howie's 'lowland locomotives' site had a page about carstairs, inc. a couple of track diagrams, info about splitting trains and the scary looking reverse cant curve off the edinburgh line. http://www.jhowie.force9.co.uk/contents.htm site seems to be down at the moment, but might be available via the 'wayback machine'
  12. how about when the real thing looks like a painting? http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertcwp/9955385764/in/photostream/ incidentally, just wish they'd have put 'BRITISH RAILWAYS' or 'KING'S CROSS STATION' above the arched windows (in gill sans of course)
  13. it's certainly an eclectic selection! mk1, ex-lms design exhibition stock, mk1 pullman, some sort of coach-flat conversion varied liveries too!
  14. just had a look on robertcwp's LHCS yahoo group - passenger workings notice for 1976/77 has the formation: 1G71 12.45 aberdeen-edinburgh (vacuum braked mk1 stock, must not exceed 315 tonnes) loco-TSO-RG-FK-4xTSO-BG-CCT (CCT empty and MX)
  15. to go OT, but in response to scorpion's post above thought that was a v. early withdrawal for a 53xx - indeed, it was first of the 26s to go. listed as cut at glasgow works 12/72, obviously they didn't do the whole job! http://6lda.wordpress.com/test-history/d5328/ presumably she and the others were only 'cut' as far as removing anything useful, then the remaining bits'n'pieces sent some considerable distance to scrappies to finish the job
  16. Melody Maker article from mickey jupp site lists the tour dates: http://www.mickeyjupp.co.uk/scrapbook_images/mm_9_9_78_org.jpg shows they booked dingwall and wick! huddersfield poly was 3rd november a collage image shows the route taken: http://www.mickeyjupp.co.uk/scrapbook_images/kollage.jpg
  17. alas time for bed, but after a quick scoot round, i found possibly D5125 and D5131 with arrows on doors - how common was this?: http://www.flickr.com/photos/59835095@N02/6263527264/in/set-72157627812411185 unfortunately can't see the right end of 25 and 31 doesn't have the odd 'morse code' surround to the headcode box
  18. don't know about much about profiles, but standard gangways present: http://urbanimage.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Stiff-Records/G00005jZtqSvoaSs/I0000g1NSAKZffzw/C0000rdY.ZwU_gYw
  19. http://urbanimage.photoshelter.com/gallery/Stiff-Records/G00005jZtqSvoaSs/C0000rdY.ZwU_gYw exhibition stock, mk1 or otherwise and at least one mk1 pullman E321E: http://urbanimage.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Stiff-Records/G00005jZtqSvoaSs/I0000.YjpatgFerA/C0000rdY.ZwU_gYw
  20. if anyone has nov/dec 1978 ROs, the info might've been reported there i've got the 1979 volume and thought it would be in there (given a possible 2-3 months lag in publishing), but the january edition only mentions sightings from november i'm sure i've seen a pic of at least one coach,i'll have a rake around to see if i can find it
  21. diagram 31 griddle car, common on the longer distance ScR services like edinburgh/glasgow-aberdeen/inverness given that it's got 2 x 26s, i'd guess it's an inverness-edinburgh via ladybank, the aberdeen-edinburghs were (i think) mostly cl.40, occasionally cl.47 thanks again for the great pics EDIT: diagram of griddle is 31, not 30. coach nos. SC1103-5
  22. lovely layout, spoiled slightly by the rather plain 2D backdrop. new bits and stock could maybe do with some weathering but the GUV is nicely manky http://www.flickr.com/photos/dmc1947/5993980661/in/set-72157627170612731
  23. the prototype thread about hellifield shed, where preserved locos were stored in the '60s, has a pic of 26500/1: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/76767-large-shed-on-down-side-at-hellifield/&do=findComment&comment=1176198 a new one of harton no.15 on robertcwp's flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertcwp/9980261816/in/set-72157603648772112/ (photos of 3 other harton locos precede this one)
  24. can't remember the relevant page or book from the barrowmore site, but i do have an image of the page for DB999508 notes on the side state they were built at swindon 1963 DB999506, lot no. 3095 DB999508/9, lot no. 3379 all are inspection saloon dia.552 EDIT: found it! of course, inspection saloons are passenger rated vehicles, but usually built to freight lots http://www.barrowmoremrg.co.uk/BRBDocuments/BRFreight2Issue.pdf p.125 has dia.552 as mentioned p.123 has dia.550, p.124 has dia.551 (no running numbers given)
