  3. During the recent devastating floods in Queensland, Australia, the front page of the Morning Bulletin of Rockhampton on 6 January included the headline "30,000 pigs swept away in flood". The next day, the paper featured this correction: "What Baralaba piggery-owner Sid Everingham actually said was '30 sows and pigs', not '30,000 pigs'." 4. Hi Craig, Any particular reason for using a hand-drawn template instead of one from Templot? That must have taken a while to draw and I can't see anything on there which couldn't be done in Templot. The change of turnout road radius at the FP can be done by splitting into two partial templates (curviform crossings). Timbers 13-14 should perhaps be more closely spaced for the stock rail joint? The REA spacing charts in BRT3 show 24" spacings for the stock rail joint, 26" spacings for the switch rail joint. Looking good. regards, Martin.

  7. More votes still needed in the Challenge trackwork prize poll. Today is the last day -- vote at: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/topic/27796-2010-challenge-extra-trackwork-prize/

  8. That's because it is a different country. Google have recently renamed the M25 as Autoroute britannique. Suggested new names for other roads and railways welcome... Martin.
  9. Hi Mark, Create a dummy draft new entry in your own blog. Only you will ever be able to see it. Post an image to it in the usual way. Right-click on the image and copy the image URL. You can then use it with img tags in blog comments elsewhere. regards, Martin.
  10. The length of an inch was increased fractionally to 25.4mm exactly by the Weights and Measures Act 1963. To measure steam-era prototypes you should use steam-era ruler!

Is that expanded steam or compressed steam?

  11. Hi Gordon, That's looking excellent. {pedantry mode=on} Some of those rails should have two fish-bolt holes in at least one end -- it's very unlikely that a pile of old rail would all have been sawn or flame-cut at both ends. Also disused rail tends to weather to a more rusty colour than track in use. Although old sleepers are often left scattered about, old rails are usually stacked a bit more neatly than that, if only for the safety of those handling them. And it's difficult to imagine how that top sleeper got there -- why lift a heavy object onto the top of a pile of rails when you could just drop it on the ground? {pedantry mode=off} I posted this link once before, but it's interesting in the present context: http://www.flickr.co...57622970345171/ Notice that there is no vegetation at track level, but plenty of it on the top of the retaining wall on the right -- nicely in the firing line for any sparks. If modelling high summer in steam days, a few burnt patches in such areas might be appropriate. That little hut between the hoardings would make a nice model detail. I wonder what was in there? regards, Martin.
  12. Hi Gordon, It's a long time since I did any scenic work, but I remember getting good results by spraying cold tea with the airbrush, which costs nothing. Also coloured drawing inks, which cost lots. The advantage of both is that they are dyes rather than pigments, and can be diluted very thin and built up gradually as a mist. There are lots of different herbal tea bags, green teas, fruit teas, etc., in the supermarket which produce various shades of rusty, browny, greeny, dusty, colours at different dilutions. You can get a selection box of different flavour tea bags. Not tried any of those for scenic work though. rusty dusty leafy regards, Martin.

  14. Hi Gordon, This smashing pic just posted by richard_t: http://www.rmweb.co....58-f4544jpg#top has a couple of rusty buffer stops and old sidings well buried in the lineside grass. Just an idea. Also, if this is a running line, in the steam era it will have a pole route alongside carrying the block telegraph wires. (With the crossbars on the Up side of the poles.) regards, Martin.
  15. Hi Gordon, Looking good, but unless this is a disused line you have the grass too close to the track. The normal formation width for a single track is 18ft, i.e. about 5ft (say 3/4" in 4mm scale) beyond the sleeper ends on each side. This area is called the "cess" (diagram is for double track, formation width 30ft): The cess area is kept free of vegetation, and as it is normally ash, chippings or similar not much grows there anyway. And the lengthman patrolling his length will keep it trodden down. In a cutting it contains the essential drains to keep the formation dry: regards, Martin.
