  1. Lets hope that you are put in this position. I suppose in order not to disapoint if the venue was booked over a weekend you could have set up 1 on Saturday, set up 2 on Sunday but having never been to a meet before I'm not sure how easy this would be so will leave it to you
  2. Some good points Kenton. On to Sunday Mornings thought for the day.... The way I'm starting to see the UK modular principle is one that caters for all abilities and is one that works with and appeals to a Forum such as this where sharing of ideas and promoting the hobby seems actively encouraged. If this involves starting the whole modular process from scratch then so be. Which I think is where Kenton is also coming from, we can evolve our UK modular set up and find our own problems but the journey will be an interesting one as it has already been. What we should hope for is a group layout with a broad representation of the RMwebbers be it X with his one board with one track with little scenery to Y with his couple of boards with his representation of the UK scenery and perhaps a junction or through station to Z who brings his great fully scenic junction board with all singing all dancing signalling terminus etc.. everyone should be encouraged to have a go and no one should be put down or frond upon for their effort. People will enjoy seeing their board and trains been used in a bigger set up. As long as some basic standards are in place (height to rail, DCC Bus etc ..) then there's no issue, even then if they got something wrong the collective group at a meeting would be hopefully able to sort any issues and people would again go away thinking what a great bunch of people I feel like I belong here... Then what you hope for is that x goes to the meet thinks hey this is good perhaps I can make my board look like y's board I'll ask him how he did a,b,c..... then things evolve X turns into to Y, Y turns into to Z new X joins the fun etc... etc... and you evolve the skills , people and the hobby... The emphasis should be on fun and participation. It may work it may not but hopefully it will as again it does in my head . Steve

  6. Just as long as the next Model Rail doesn't suddenly gain a new tag line ....... MODEL RAIL Spilling the beans before everyone else*! *subscription applies I guess we can let them off.
  7. Maybe Rapido have been double crossed by the NRM and its a Bachmann APT-E. Could be the plot behind the next Bond film that.... Steve
  8. 7 minutes and we have failed with the Tea and Biscuits ...... This must be what the Fremo people mean when they say they have 30 years of experience. I can imagine their AGM in 1984... "ok point 8.1.5 we have tried punishing the derailments with rounds of Tea and Biscuits but young Angela (pronounced An-ge-la ) has dietary needs so doesn’t gain when others fail" "Ummm we agree, we will need to look into this but how....lets come back next year" AGM 1985 ..... "OK Point 8.1.5 that we discussed last year , Young Angela is now one year older and has now taken to bringing in water from an Alpine spring and wants recompense but we failed to take out insurance for such an event.... perhaps instead of Tea and Biscuits we should fine the operators with hard cash instead so Young Angela can go on Holiday to Switzerland to bottle the water herself...." I wonder if they did go through 30 pages of discussion to decide ..... Steve P.S the events and people mentioned above are purely fictitious I'm not sure if there is an Angela who has dietary needs or is indeed interested in modular railways...
  9. This one caught my eye when reading the Fremo standards from here http://www.fremo-net.eu/h0_normentwurf.html?&L=6 Standard 8.1.5 Page 38 8.1.5 Signals and derails Derails and signals need to be observed during operation. Disregarding a derail carries a fine of €5 for engineers and €2.50 for conductors. Perhaps we could adopt this standard but change it to A.Y 1 .1 UK Signals and Derails Derails and signals need to be observed during operation. Disregarding a derail carries a fine of A Round of Teas for Drivers and a round of Biscuits for Guards. Steve
  10. I think preparation and cut off times could solve some of the financial problems mentioned above for example if someone decides right were having a meet in September this year, I've booked a hall were all go, just turn up and pay on the day depending on numbers depends how much, may cause problems. Where as .... OK I've provisionally booked a hall for April 2015 I need to confirm attendance by 1st Feb but I will need definite numbers by 14th January so we can work out the costs and if we want to go ahead with non-refundable payment which gives time to build / save / book hotels / time off work etc, will work better. And the insurance thing I think would be worth it especially if someone ducks under a board smacks his head and the whole lot comes down like Dominoes then at least there is cover in place if someone feels aggrieved that their time and effort has been wasted. It also will instil confidence that we take things seriously. Cheers Steve
  11. You certainly do come across as very passionate about Fremo Felix I know you have added a link to the UKFremo page and it is linked from there but this is a more direct link to show some of the info in English on the standards that they have adopted some of which maybe useful. http://www.fremo-net.eu/index.php?eID=tx_nawsecuredl&u=0&g=0&t=1406266094&hash=b6fe28a6caf6b08ecc61af668dee5422520a2a49&file=fileadmin/redakteure/felix.moering/Norm_UK_EN.pdf Will download a PDF file Cheers Steve
  12. Maybe theres a collector of empty boxes somewhere as he has a few..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-EMPTY-Hornby-R2946-BR-4-VEP-CLASS-423-TRAIN-PACK-BOX-FREE-POST-/380936021350?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item58b18e6566 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EMPTY-Hornby-R665-EUROSTAR-TRAIN-PACK-BOX-OO-SCALE-with-POLY-TRAY-/380954079232?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item58b2a1f000 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RARE-Hornby-ORIENT-EXPRESS-R1038-PREMIER-SET-RED-STORAGE-BOX-with-ALL-INSERTS-/201095941270?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item2ed2408c96 To be fair some of his stuff is OK - price wise and he offers free postage on a lot of stuff so take that into account. He must be making a bit with the sum of the parts is bigger than the sum of the whole policy of dismantling everything though and 100% feedback on 18000+ sales he looks like he's doing something right..... Steve
  13. I think the height issue was originally proposed for the benefit of younger members and wheelchair users to encourage more participation something which the other groups didn't appear to take into account.
  14. I'm starting to get confused, I thought we had set the standards 7 pages ago or are we still debating? Luckily I’ve only ordered some wire and some Banana plugs / sockets at the moment so I’ll hold off with the rest until I get a definite agreed list? Cheers Steve EDIT:- Having re - read Andy’s proposals on page 25 he does seem to only suggest a lot of things except the banana plugs which seem to now be fixed so I guess we are still in the discussion period.... it was so long ago my mind playing tricks
  15. Hi Paul, I like your junction set up highlighted in the red box and see this as possibly my 2nd phase of building a board (1st phase been a straight track on rectangle board.) Unless a supplier comes on board with laser cut board kits that will fit to the standard I'll be using either 3ft by 18 inches or 4 ft. by 18 inches rectangles as this is all space at home will allow. My question is I take it you would need to have some sort of transition module (Board B Below) to get the curvature to come off the top rectangle board to then form the 90 degree and centred to the end of the board before someone else can attach their module to it as you wouldn't be able to get the curve to 90 degrees in the 1st board so in affect you have 2 modules that need to go together, also I suppose board A could also be used as a standalone module with a line plus siding / head shunt which may come in handy. Excuse the MS Paint plan below the track may not even fit in the dimensions but it’s just to aid what I'm talking about.. Cheers Steve
