  1. I have a 75 watt iron, which I find oxidises quickly and is a problem to keep clean. Any suggestions anybody?

I bought an 80 watt Antex iron before xmas and straight away wished I'd bought it a long time ago. The tip does oxidise faster than the 40 watt I was mostly using before.

But for keeping the tip clean during sessions I use a metal pan scourer, rather than a wet sponge. That was another top tip for Jazz of this parish.

  2. Right, well after a polite prod from Matt (Brian The Snail) I've got on with re-numbering the Pannier.

Here's what I had. Please ignore the dust and bits picked up from the workbench.

If I remember correctly it was IanWales who informed me that the centre of the fitted numberplates could be easily removed. And indeed they can be easily popped out with a blade.

The glue holding the plate on took a bit of point with it so the whole centre was given a coat of black acrylic.

Next a heavy coat of gloss varnish was used to fix the numbers from Martin Finney in place.

And finally the moulded plastic border was picked out with Humbrol Gold.

The result. Not perfect, but should be fine once it's weathered. And I now have a Swindon Pannier :)

  3. Just bought a bag of Peco coal at £4.75.

I can remember when you could have bought half a ton for that !

Mind you, it came in grotty sacks and not a pretty plastic bag...

One of the benefits of having an open fire. Just raid the coal bucket :)

And the stress relief when smashing it down to a suitable size for wagon loads is rather handy.
