Which have a finite endurance. 30+ years back, one winter in the depths of rural Oxfordshire, we had heavy snow, which took out the power. The phone did keep working, for about 30 hours, at which point we assumed that the exchange batteries had gone flat or the generator had run out of fuel. No mobiles in those days. The power returned after about 40 hours. As I understand it, once you've gone all fibre, the green cabinets will be passive, if used at all. Exchanges will also largely disappear. Adrian

My first microwave died a couple of years ago. It was bought in the 1987 January sales. Adrian

I was on the M27 a few weeks back, and on the overhead gantries, lanes 1 and 3 had a different speed showing to lane 2, I forget which way around, but one was 40, the other 60. Adrian

Fascinating old adverts for railway equipment
figworthy replied to D7063's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
I have vague recollection from the mid 70s of glass fibre (the raw material) and Turners in the same context, in which case it is quite possible that there are people out there who handled the raw material at home when making "stuff". Adrian -
Scaling from a file drawn full size?
figworthy replied to bubbles2's topic in 3D Printing, Laser Cutting, CAD & CNC
Very thin. I've tried printing a couple of his models (scaled to 4mm). The bodies seem to come out OK, but the W irons and tie rods don't work well for me. 0.25mm nozzle. 0.15mm layer which is as fine as I can go. A decent etched chassis kit with a printed body would work well I think. Adrian -
Jim’s “out and about with GBRf” thread
figworthy replied to big jim's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
Thanks. My guesses were that either it was closed, or that it wasn't cleared for 66s. Adrian -
For those that remember "Brass" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brass_(TV_series) ), they developed a cricket ball, know as the Larwood which exploded when hit. Handy for getting out those opposition batsmen with good defence. Adrian

Mass cull of ticket offices
figworthy replied to newbryford's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
And some of us even managed to get them. Many years back, the travel agents that my then employers used managed to issue me a return ticket to Southwell (I actually wanted Fiskerton, but thought it was called Southwell). And Southwell did indeed close (to passengers) before I was born. Adrian -

Had it occurred to you that the machine was secretly trying to do you a favour ? Adrian -

The only TVMs I've used have been the Chiltern ones, and the touch screens don't seem to work very well. I regularly have to tap it several times before it does what I want (e.g. ticket type, rail card type). The annoying part of it is that I could buy the tickets I want from a real person two or three paces from the machine, but I can't pay them for the car park, so I've got to use the machine. Adrian
