    LSWR/SR ADAM'S T1 CLASS.
Managed a couple of hours on this while paint was drying.
I'm sort of copying LSWR practice with the cab interior, mainly looking at O2's and G6's working on the principal they'll all be similar, as designed by the same man. Here are the two cab sandboxes, they go in the bunker, cab side corners. I presume as they seem to have wooden tops they lift off for filling. I need to add operating levers.

Next is the locker that fits on the rear spectacle plate. This is ready for fixing in place. I made it as a simple box then added the door detail to the front.

Now back to the frames. I needed to make the compensation beams that sit either side, against the frames. I cut out the basic shape from two pieces of nickel soldered together. When made I tacked them and the frames together, and drill a pilot hole for pivot point. I always on this wheel arrangement, put it a millimetre or so towards the outer end, to put just a little more weight on the leading wheel. I find this leads to less derailing due to it not lifting quite so easily. It works for me, whether the theory is correct or not I'm not sure.

I also made a start on cleaning up the springs, I didn't get very far as they need more work than I first thought. The springs had more mould lines than I first saw, and the spring part is actually curved and in need of straightening. Then the usual task of getting the hangers inline and at the correct angle. The lefthand one is almost complete, the others are patiently waiting their turn.

Should be able to do more shortly.

    LSWR/SR ADAM'S T1 CLASS.
This post brings us up to date.
We start off with a couple of pictures of most of the parts after separation and cleaning.
First are the body parts and the second are the frame parts. Doing this lets me see where I am and what else I need to do.

I made a couple of discs that fit onto the firebox sides in the frame cut outs.

Work then progressed onto the cab. The front spectacle plate had the vent holes drilled just under the roof line. I almost did to many, fortunately I checked the photos.

Cab rear had the same holes drilled, I need to check if I need to add the handrail under these. Then drill it's holes if needed. I also formed the shelf on this part.

The front bunker plate was cut to height next, all the detail on this is surface mounted.

Bunker rear was formed and cut to length.

Although cut out sometime ago I made up them up mainly to check the length.

Hopefully I'll be doing some more soon. But I'm busy painting and finishing models to bring to the UK.

Still a little in catch up mode from when rmweb was down.

First part that's really been made, the ash pan. First is the ash pan then sitting under the firebox spacer where it will belong.

I then realised I would need some sides for part of the firebox. Again the first picture shows them net to the spacer, followed by where they'll be against the frames.

Smoke box next. The front and rear were cut out together, and the wrapper was cut from 010” sheet.

The boiler was next up, this is actually mark 2, I managed to roll it the wrong way first time. Took me a while to figure out why it was to short and to large in diameter. I'm a bit slow sometimes.

I was cross with myself for making the frames flat topped and not more prototypically. Só tô try and remedy this I cut some half moons which I hope will solder to the frames, the over size horn guides will aid by reinforcing the joint.

Some more parts were cut, these are the brake lever supports and the hand brake levers. The power brake levers on the other side will be done when I can measure the length. The dummy compensation beams for the bogie were also part of the session.
Here they are just cut out.

The levers and brackets filed up.

    The beam also filed.

    LSWR/SR ADAM'S T1 CLASS.
This is a bit of a catch up. So this is as the pictures were uploaded not as I made the parts.

The sides cut out, the height above the door still needs to lowered.

Cab front and rear were joined and then worked on.

Here are the parts so far.

Footplate was cut out. I did get the front cut out slightly wrong but it won't be seen in the final form.

The drop irons and the buffer planks were next, except the buffer planks are a little camera shy.

    Frames and splashers filed up.

Then the frame spacers. From left to right.
Cylinders, motion bracket, firebox bottom, bogie mount, and rear fixing.

The front and rear steps, along with the buffer planks.

Finally for now the front and rear guard irons.

This part of the build is to join together the parts that need to be doubled up. These are soldered together then the drawing is glued on with pritt stick( other versions are available).

    The frames are joined.

After glueing the drawing a quick check to see if it has stretched or twisted.

The other parts were done in the same manner.

I did find some Four Track horn guides and blocks. Which will work nicely. I have realised that I forgot to allow for the frames behind the wheels. This may be added later.

I also have some lovely cast brass springs, which seem to fit very well. Shhh I bought them sold as for GWR locos, so just keep quiet about it.

Finally parts that I managed lose, so re cut. The tank tops and inner sides. Might well need a driving wheel cut out.

Piercing saw out next t think.

    LSWR/SR ADAM'S T1 CLASS.
Battle has began, after getting the drawing to scale by sizing on the printer I printed out enough copies to cut up and to have a master. I check that they all have come of the printer the same size. I have known them to reduce across the width of the paper. I did do a wagon drawing where the height was reduced by 2mm but, the length was correct.

Next part, to cut out the major parts from the drawings, side tanks an cab, splashers, main frames. I must do the front profile drawing, ready for the cab front and rear sheets. I also cut out some 010" sheet for the body and some 018" for the frames.

As I had a spare half hour I did some cutting.
    Now I have a T1 loco kit.

To the left are the frames, with the spacer strip in the centre. I have a feeling I should of made it 25mm not 24. We will see later.
At the  are the cab and bunker fronts and rears, all correct width but over long. The splasher outers are there on the right.

In the centre, the footplate is cut to size.

Above the footplate are the two cab, bunker and tank sides. I did forget to put in the photo the combined tank inners and tops.

Time to restart my blog. First item on the agenda is a long term scratch build. Hopefully it will be completed by the end of the year. I still need parts, so these will be sourced when I come to the UK in June.

Let's start with what I will be building. It is an ex LSWR T1 class, designed by Adam’s, 20 built by him, and 30 by Drummond, they differed slightly, I have a feeling I will be building a Drummond built one. It will be finished in Southern olive lined livery with an E prefix.

Here's what I've collected so far for the build.

The drawings are basic, but contain enough information to build, if used with photos. If anyone has works drawing if be grateful of a copy.

I have also got various castings, some of which will not be used, but until I get to them I do not know which would be best suited

I got out most of my LSWR domes and chimneys. But the two I most likely to use are the loose flared Drummond chimney and the large dome in one of the packets

The only thing done so far is the scaling of one of the drawings, I have printed a few and will use them for cut and pasting for cutting out the sheet material.

Hopefully there will be an update soon. But, don't hold your breath as I've got some painting to do.

    Ivatt 2mt tank
This is where I have got to so far. Been a bit of a pain, SWMBO is only working half days this month although it is nice we get more time together my work time is reduce.

I have discovered another more major problem I have no small BR totems for the Ivatt, so have ordered some from Fox. I am hoping these do not take more than 4 weeks to get here.

I have some LNER Fox transfers for the V3 I have never actually built enough north eastern to buy my usual HMRS ones.

A bit of a photo overload I am afraid. There is still a lot of tidying up to do, and a few bits I am unhappy with. The grey and cream look very white. I may have another look at it. The Ivatt is first up.

    Now the V3

That's all for now. I am hoping to get the transfers and the varnish on the V3 next week. No work tomorrow off to the seaside for lunch. Then I think it is time to start reassembly of the Frames etc.

By the way who know what colours the inside of of the cabs? I am thinking black and cream waist height on the sides and front.

    LNER V3
Well, I have had a bit of a disaster with the paintwork. After getting the chassis working and the loco reassembled I found a bl@@dy fingerprint in the varnish on one tank. Not sure how it happened. It was a new acrylic varnish I had not used before, it seemed to be dry. I tried a fi but just made a bigger mess of things. So I resigned myself to stripping it down and repainting the body. Having used cellulose paint I thought I would try white spirit first, it may strip the varnish and if removed the lining it would still be better than a complete repaint.

As it happened the white spirit stripped the varnish and left the lining. I gave it a few good washes and it came up spotlessly clean. I made sure all was good and then it was revarnished with the matt, which is quite satin.

I actually think it looks better. Having thought I was finished, I need to take it apart again as I now need to recoat the steps and cylinders they are still in the shinier lacquer.

    Here's the pictures anyway.

  10. N15class

    LNER V3
The loco has now had the transfers added and has been given a coat of varnish. I am pleased with the way it looks, I decided to use flat varnish on the frames pony, smoke box and cab roof. The rest is all satin, which is a little shiny for my taste.

I also started the reassembly of the frames. It now has it's legs on. The motor in place The pony was only added for the photos as I do not want it damaging anything while the valve gear is put back together. The coupling rods are next along with pickups and then it can be tested at each stage.

Just to check that the two halves still went together properly. It looks quite pleasing to the eye. I still cannot get over how large it is. Must also clean off the finger prints before taking pictures too.

Sorry about the dire photos I think I need to use another location. There is too much over exposing due to the light marble window sill.
  11. N15class

    Ivatt 2mt tank
Just a quick update. I have painted the loco and now will give it a few days to cure. Then I will close the doors and put the aircon on and do the lining on this and the V3.

    Here it is in black.

A bit of a picture overload. But it's easier than typing.

    Ivatt 2mt tank
Finally finished all the constructional work. Well almost I have not added the covers to the firebox shoulders.

The jobs since the last update

First off was to add the firebox washout plugs, no holes or plugs were in the kit so I fortunately had some nice brass ones.

The rear buffers were the first of the white metal castings to be added.

The top feed was then soldered in place with some copper wire for the pipes. The smokebox door was next, the lamp irons handrail and dart were soldered on but I needed to use epoxy resin, as were the steam pipes. I needed something with a little filling capability.

The Back head was finished as far as this one goes. Not the best I have seen but once inside it will look the part I think. I may add a little more detail to the cab after painting, but we will see.

Here are the three main bits just resting together I wanted to get an overall picture to see if I had forgotten anything obvious. As you will see from above I had forgotten something. They will be added tomorrow and finish the the cleaning ready for the painting to start on Monday.

Lets hope the painting goes as well as the the V3. Then it's time to sit down and do lots of lining.
  13. N15class

    Ivatt 2mt tank
I started todays session by fitting the hand rails to the smokebox. After marking out and drilling new holes for the knobs. I filled the etched ones with brass wire soldered in and filed smooth.

The can floor was next. After trimming to fit the packers were soldered underneath, unfortunately the wheels rubbed on it, so after rereading the instructions to see what I had missed. They just say put the floor in out of level to miss them. Not liking this I cut a slot and added a step. I also fitted the base for the reverser. Does anyone know where the brake standard goes? There is nothing about detailing in the unstructions.

There was a half etch around them, but no frames in the kit or mention in the pages of wisdom. So I bend and soldered some 0.45mm wire to go around them.

Whistle and safety valve were straight forward.

Next I fitted the ejector and pipe work to the left hand side. Unfortunately I needed to remove the tank vent. It may need adjusting before it is refitted, but that is Monday now.

As BR used to say "we are getting there" I have sorted out the steam pipes. They needed a lot of work with low melt solder I will glue them on at the end of the soldering.
  14. N15class

    Ivatt 2mt tank
Some more done on the Ivatt, not as much as I hoped but not much time At the bench.

I had to make some washout plugs for the boiler, which have duly been added. The method is on my Scratch building thread.

I also remade the tank breather pipes. I started off by doing the one I had to remove, but then the other one look odd. At the same time I added the brackets to hold them to the front spectacle plate.

I also made a start on getting the backhead looking a little better than the everything cast on jobby I started with. I still need to added the regulator and the brake levers. It is not the best back head but a lot better than it was. I am sure it will look good once it is fitted.

More soon not that there is a lot more to do.
  15. N15class

    Ivatt 2mt tank
I decided to be a good boy and try and get the Ivatt and the V3 finished. After being disheartened buy the wrong castings I am now going to knuckle down and frget the episode for now.

All started well I made up the two air vents, they just need a clip to hold them to the spectacle plate. I made up the two missing tank stays. they are pretty close and when under paint will be fine. The tank gauge was also added.

Then things go down hill again, I get the chimney and dome out. The chimney is OK and with a little cleaning is fine. But the dome was terrible, very pitted and not cast well around the base. So out with the wet and dry to clean it enough to solder. I then did a couple of repairs using high melting point. Then with scrapers, files and wet and dry I got it looking correct. I see that Laurie is at Guildex so I will have a word with him then. And buy my G6 casting.

There is a little more brass work to do on the body, quite a bit to do in the cab, and then on with the white metal castings, not too many of those now.
  16. N15class

    LNER V3
The basic painting of this has taken for longer than I thought. I have got some new cellulose primer and black which took a little getting the mix right. Was used to fairly runny paint but this is thick.

I think I got it right in the end. I do need to repaint the cab roof I had some problem with water. I meant to do it after the main body was rubbed down and re coated. But some forgot. So I will have to make a mess just for one item. May try and fit it in when the buffer planks are done.

Here are a few photos I was pleased the way the back head came out. Just a little detail painting to do. I will give it a day or so to cure, then I can start the lining. At least it is only one colour.

  17. N15class

    Ivatt 2mt tank
I had a packet today. The long awaited parts from Laurie Griffin.

First up we have the Dome and whistle.

Next it is the water gauge and the vents. Only trouble is the vents are wrong the should be tubes, these are for a 2MT tender, although the packet has the right number. Back to scratch build that I wanted to avoid.

Then we have the tank stays and the chimney.

Alao in the bag with the tank stays was this. Any ideas folks cos it bamboozled me!!!!!

Now What to do, I want to build my G6 but now have no excuse to finish this one off.
  18. N15class

    LNER V3
Here we are finally at the strip down and big clean up time.

I think it is all done now. The castings have all been added although some are better than others. I am sure there are better ones out there. There is only so much time and effort that can be spent on a project.

I also added a representation of some of the oil pipes at the smokebox end. The roof had it's gutters and vent covers adding. To hold it in place I soldered a two wires at the front one in each corner to hold it in the right place. Then one on the centre at the rear which acts like a spring clip on a piece of wire soldered on the back sheet in the tool cupboard.

Hopefully next time I post it will be because there is some paint on the body. Must dig out my lining pen and practice a little. At least it is only one colour.
  19. N15class

    LNER V3
I had a good session fitted a few of the castings and made up the back head.

I was really disappointed with what was in the kit, there was a cast and etched backhead the etched one would of bee even more work. There was two sets of whitemetal casting each containing a hand wheel an undersize boiler feed and a blob. I think the brake valve was in the kit but not sure now. I modified the brake valve, and added the other bits whitemetal scrap bucket that I cast into weights for my locos.

There was no regulator or steam manifold. There was a reverser but for some reason a lever one not screw. I got a pair of gauge glasses from the spares box along with two boiler feeds that could be adapted to something closer to LNER looking items.

The reverser was made and added the other day, so I made up the header and other bits to look a little like the parts that should be there. A bit of cursing and and hot fingers we managed to get this. I even made a heat shield for the driver, so he better be thankful when he gets there.

The Brake standard will be fitted next session. Then the cab will be just about done.

I must say my parts box has not been bashed so heavily for a long time I must start restocking.

I did not get a chance to photo the other work so that will be another update. Should be about wrapped next session at the bench. Or I hope it will be.
  20. N15class

    LNER V3
I have had a couple of successful sessions, even if they were not overly long.

The rear lamp irons and destination board brackets have been added.

The extra front guard irons and the front steps have been fixed in place. I am not totally happy with the steps I will adjust next time.

The front lamp irons are on now, apart from the one on the door. This will bbe fixed when the low melt comes out. Also fitted are the front destination board brackets. Smokebox door is just rested in place.

The boiler handrail, and the brake ejector pipe are now in place.

I also added the reverser and made the backhead a similar size to the boiler. needed about a millimeter filing of the top half. It is now ready for detailing.

I then tinned and sanded most places where whitemetal castings will go. I also had to alter the buffers as I had bought group standard ones but these had parallel ones, all sorted now. The chimney needed hollowing out and it and the dome were sanded to fit their respective places. I have just rested these in place along with the roof, which needs detailing and fitting, then that's the end of the hot soldering. I also looked at the wheel balance weights, it looks as though I will be making 2. There are 8 with the kit 2 large 2 medium and 4 small and of course I need 2 large and 4 medium.

I will be off to the shops before painting as I have no primer. I have also found a car paint shop so will see if I can get a litre tin rather than an aerosol. A tin of black too. I may get as much of the Ivatt painted as I can I also think the tender and loco frames for the 0395 are ready for black.
  21. N15class

    LNER V3
The battle has been won. The valve gear has been assembled and is working.

As much as it was a fight I think it looks OK now. I did complicate it by want the front end to look as though it actually does something.

The work required to the kit parts is as follows, You have to remember it came like a 4mm kit, just a single layer etched parts. So very basic for 7mm.

The connecting rod was made three layers rather than two. Holes actually the distance apart.
Eccentric arm shortened and hole re drilled.
Eccentric rod doubled to make forked joint.
The link was OK just needed tube adding to keep it in the right place.
Reversing arm shortened and doubled for fork onto the radius rod.
The radius rod doubled for forked joint, but left single for link and reversing arm.
Combination lever left single but the top holes for radius rod, and valve spindle,
    Union link remake completely.
The valve rod, couplings for the combination lever and the dummy 3 to 1 gear at the front all scratch built.

A trial fit of the body it was discovered that the expansion link cut out was in the wrong place, and the connecting rod fouled the footplate curve at the front of the tanks. Once attacked with the mini disc all was well.

I then finished the step support, added the balance pipe and the pipes for the injectors. I then noticed the the han brake gear is very visible so this was added as there is nothing in the kit or mention in the instructions.

I refitted the carrying wheels to check the clearances for a final time, Just a little fettling of the pony was required. I have added mounting points for their control springs. Thats the frames done ready for stripping and painting. PHEW!!!!!!!

I had been playing with the 0395 by the test track. When checking the V3 the 0-6-0 looked like it was to a different scale. This beastie is huge.

There is very little left in the box, but seems so much more to be added to the body.
  22. N15class

    LNER V3
I had a bit of a fit with the steam pipes, the cast and etched ones in the kit are no good at all. I took me a couple of goes to get ones that I could use. I think they look OK just need to do some more cleaning up around them.

The wheels which were blackened a little while ago, have had the crank pins fitted and have been refitted in the frames. I have also added a plate on which the cab steps have been mounted. I have done it this way as there is also the balance pipe and injectors to be fitted to it. I felt it was better than some on the body and some on the frames.

Now let the fight begin. I am having more trouble with the valve gear on this than with the inside motion on my G6 project. I have had to laminate some to get forked joints. Then some parts have been re drilled to get the holes in a more correct position, then a couple needed remaking completely. And then some twit thought it might be nice to have the other end of the valve rod moving.

Well we are getting there slowly, one step forward and two back. You will see there are bits of wire and tube holding parts on this is just to aid lining parts up while the joints are made.

I need to do a little more work on the front crank pin and crosshead they are catching a little. I will also sort the return cranks to set the up the other half of the valve gear. Then just repeat everything on the other side. The quality of the frames is very poor against the body. Everything with them is a fight. It is quite poorly designed and reworked. I will be sending William an email to mention some of the short comings, but I expect they will be ignored the is a Gazette review which mentions some of the problems I have had.
  23. N15class

    LNER V3
Finally done a part that I have been putting of since I started the body build. For some reason I was dreading doing the centre cylinder covers,

I suppose it stems from the fact the etching on the footplate for them was wrong, and the cast ones also supplied bore little resemblance to the real thing. I now just need to finish the steam pipes. These also needed to be remade, I am about half way through them.

You will also see the boiler has been soldered in place. I was going to make it removable but for strength and to save damage after painting, It is a real tight fit between the tanks.

I am pleased the way this is turning out I was a bit down with the build at the beginning, but it has got better or I have got in sinc with it.

Having got the cab sort I remember I had made but not fitted the sand boxes. Now the boiler is in I see the backhead is the wrong diameter. I will reduce it as much as I can but I am not going to worry to much about it. I still need to add the front floor, Might be those ubiquitous coffee stirrers I stole from the UK. There is an awful lot of detailing required in the cab.

    More soon I hope.

Just a small update and a question.

Here is the motor and Roxey 26-1 gearbox. You will see the adapter plate as the motor mounting holes are too far apart for the gearbox, also there is a rather large phosphor bronze bearing. Now the Question What is this motor and where can I get some more. 40Long 24 across flats 28 diameter.

I have got on with the cab, adding something to the front. I must admit I got the ideas from the DJH photo's on their website. I now need to get the back head in and the then the detailing can begin. I think that may start tomorrow along with finishing the frames off.

I have had a poor week at the bench, not sure if it would of made a morning session all added together. Holiday here tomorrow so a weekend at the house lets see if things can be changed around.

I have been mainly messing with the motor gearbox, I needed to make an adapter plate between the motor and the Roxey fold up box. I will be using a 26 to 1 ratio which I think will work quite well.

On the construction side, I when to add the castings to the pony, only to find that there was no room for them. I removed the etched sides of the pony and repositioned them about 2mm further in. Then trimmed the base to suit. The axle bushes were also reversed and the castings reamed out to fit over them. I have also decided how and where the centralizing spring will go.

I also assembled the steps to the cab and front drop. I am undecided at the moment whether I fix them to the body or the frames. I will look into that soon.

I am hoping that I may be able to get the frames running over the weekend.
