  1. I went through this a while back, in the end my best gain was from a good light but everyone's sight is different this is helpful
  2. I agree no difference in performance but I have 12 tandem fiddle yard loops and the locos deliberately stall at the end of their journey on an isolation gap (then the next train moves off) so I want pick ups on the rearmost wheels. Other wise if I substitute a Bach 9f for a new Hornby 9f I would have to remove 2 wagons from the train to compensate for the tender length.
  3. Great Tender pick ups unlike the Duke.

    Old Mills .

The wagon kits I built during the Lockdown 2 years ago are now (finally) going through the paint shops. First up 4 grey vans to expand the unfitted van train.
  5. The best ideas come to me when I'm eating my tea! The probe or electric pencil (I have a pal that calls it the "magic wand") does not have to be wired through the panel. it can come straight from the CDU. Obviously it clips to the side of the panel when not in use but it's not part of the panel.
  6. I actually have a 9 way commercial Male/female D plug cable spare, I might split it and use 5 of the wires to carry the 16v live feed. Leaves 4 spare for something else and shares the load 5 ways.
  7. Actually that is probably what I did on my own Layout https://www.rmweb.co.uk/blogs/entry/25230-old-mills/ when I added an auxiliary panel. Made from a £5 "Works" shop box it uses the probe from the main panel.
  8. Thanks for that. The unit for the 16v power supply is a separate unit from the transformer for the 12v supply, And also from the 16v DCC supply. I think I will put the CDU outside the panel and do as you suggest
  9. Perhaps I didn't explain well enough. Without the CDU the common return is from the point to the - on the track. The independent 16v supply also connects to the - on the track and the probe to the + on the same supply (this works OK) so if I add the CDU unit does the - have to go through the CDU unit? Basically the problem for me is the control panel I am building is removable so that the connection is a Male/Female 25 way D plug and if I put the CDU inside the panel then I have to use 2 terminals (1in 1 out) for the Common return. Actually as I am a belt and bracers kind of guy I like to use 2 wires to each connection for reliability. If I put the CDU outside the panel (and wire the common return through it) then I would only have to feed the live feed through the plug but the surge might exceed the rating on the plug.
  10. Good Afternoon all. Can anyone tell me if I am right or wrong on this matter? I have a Gaugemaster CDU as per photo that I want to fit into a panel (stud contact for points) for a mate. The Gaugemaster CDU wiring diagram shows a common return connection. I don't think I need this? Just connect the live feed?

    Old Mills .

Oh Wow! I hadn't looked at this for ages. Sorry for your wait I'll check and get back to you ASAP.
  12. Good Afternoon all. I am looking for ideas on starting very small drills i.e. 0.25mm/10thou. Obviously bigger drills are started by a centre punch dot, a centre drill or a piece of masking tape to stop that initial tendency to wander. However tiny drills need another approach and I have not found it yet. HELP please

    Old Mills .

I had not done any modelling for ages so in an attempt to recapture my "mojo" I paid a visit to my long time buddy; Tony Wright
  14. Wow! I had forgotten about this post from way back. It's destroyed by the wipe out of pictures. Should I eliminate the whole thread or not?
  15. A public apology! Just tried to find mag and it's not in the box with the others. There are 2 mags missing. so I have misfiled them! I will sort it but it may be a week or 2. Sorry,
  16. Off topic a bit? I have PMed you a couple of pix; 5311 in unlined green with early emblem and 6844 with an early emblem Hawksworth tender circa '63. Although this Grange received a Collett late emblem one at it's previous shopping a depot tender swap occurred. What a minefield research becomes!

  18. My opinion and locos vary. Performance wise > Dapol as it is smoother and heavier by 70g. Also has removable cab section to fit a crew. My Hornby one works better bunker first for some reason. Otherwise not a lot in it.
  19. I put 15g lead shot/superglue in 2 Hornby Black 5 and 2 Hornby 8f smoke boxes 10 years ago and had no ill effects. They are still ok. I think as long as it has 1 direction to expand into it's fine.
  20. Indeed. Assuming the photo captions are correct the ones lasting to 1960/1 include 4112*/34/64/70 5150 6105*/28/56/69 * Small emblem (I think the small emblem ones were painted at Wolverhampton) Research continues. I have a lot of books and magazines still to check.
  21. 6169 kept lined green early crest until it's end but I doubt it visited Bristol.
  22. I have a couple of models of these super 2-6-2ts and one of them is lined green with early emblem. I have not yet found a photo of one like this in the 1958-62 period in the Bristol area. Would it be accurate to use a Welsh or Leamington loco in this location or did they remain close to their allocated shed?
