  1. In my building site experiance, a tipper with a raised bed is very unstable, cases of lorries tipping over if load does not fully discharge, I think very bad practice to have bed raised, takes no efford to raise or lower, except a little time.
  2. Agree, I just want to highlight and remember the personal consequences to ordinary people, there are many model railway clubs, plus alsorts of other clubs, near the edge of the zone who have a catchment area that extends beyond.
  3. Londons ULEZ Ultra Low Emissions Zone is due to be extended later this year to the whole of London, not wishing to go into all the arguments about this, I was reflecting on how this will effect our hobby, talking to someone at EXPOEM, he lives just outside the new zone, but attends a club just inside, he is not willing or able to buy a new vehicle, so each visit would cost £12.50 which he cannot afford, I live outside the zone but visit exhibitions, which will soon be inside, fortunatly I have a ULEZ compliant vehicle, EURO 6, but how many others will be put off attending by the £12.50 charge. Also an exhibition could be faced with extra expenses if inviting a layout from outside the zone, I have already been asked about my vehicle for an exhibition I am attending in December. I do not want to rant, but just wish to make people aware of the changes.
  4. While visiting a conservation area in north Germany, one of the features was large barn type buildings with red clay tile roofs, except today almost all covered with solar panels, seems a practical approach.
  5. Areas may vary, where I live in Kent, house coal is banned, but not smokeless coal, such as Anthracite, which I burn.
  6. Not odd at all, I always imagined I would like a home layout to operate, had a permanent garage layout for twenty years, in practice it was only operated when friends came round, almost never by myself, what I really enjoy is building models, layouts, ships and aircraft. I also enjoy exhibiting, can operate all day and chat to visitors, exhibiting can be physically hard work, especially getting older, owned a box trailer in the past, now own a van, which takes away all the pressure of loading, unloading before and after a show.
  7. As a child I remember these Police Phones being common, sometimes with the light flashing, never seen a real Police Box.
  8. I had two Digitrax AR1s on my , now gone, garage layout, one an a return loop and one on a turntable, followed the instructions, seemed straight forward, as far as I can remember, they worked for 15 years, near the end if I had not operated for a few weeks, there was a sound like a relay sticking, once it had thrown, it worked as normal.
  9. Nice work, a question would there not have been Ready Use Lockers, in the wagon with the guns?
  10. How is the layout progressing? I liked this image from "Britain From Above", 1920.
  11. Recently exhibited at the Watford Exhibition, no barriers, mixture of modellers and general public with children, no problems at all, I do have a low Perspex screen, which does save the front edge from fingers, mine included when setting up. Photo taken prior to opening, it was quite busy, I do have some barriers but have never seen a need to use them.
  12. As already suggested, just connect the pick up wires to the motor, unless there is some fault, it will work as normal DC, leave the chip in place or sell on.
  13. I've had very good results, both spraying and brushing, been using Ammo Mig and Tamiya paints, am sure other brands just as good, Ammo Mig do some excellent tutorials on line, I use Halfords rattle can primer, good adhesion to all surfaces, always dries with a very thin coat, even where I've been a bit heavy handed.
  14. Thank you for the timely info, as we are driving to the Polish Baltic coast in two weeks, stopping at Dusseldorf and Hamburg on the way.
  15. A bit off topic, we came across a similar crossing in Poland, we waited for the green signal, which came, only problem was that the traffic did not stop, similarly there were black and white crossing markings, which I think meant "Try Crossing Here", you just had to take your chance!
  16. Two other Severn Models kits, large shed and greenhouse with interior.
  17. I to have been pleased with items from Severn Models, enjoyed soldering them together, this is my take on the platelayers hut, used Scalescenes brick to match my other buildings, and a Modelu chimney pot.
  18. A whole subject to get correct for your chosen period and location! as a child in the 60s we had a large H shape aerial on a wooden pole in the garden, I can remember the first "BBC2 type" aerials appearing, it was quite a status symbol.
  19. Not just Europe, in my last job two of my work colleagues, both from The Gambia, spoke different languages, they could only speak English together.
  20. Seen these at Shapeways, 16 for £11.71 plus postage.
  21. I had a Canon refillable printer, the only problem was when the print head blocked, I did try all the cleaning cycles and tips on You Tube, nothing worked, a new print head was more expensive than a new printer! at least with the normal expensive ink cartridges they each have their own print head, either way ink jet printers can be expensive to run.
  22. Could be open deck, rail supported on timber baulks, or closed deck, with normal ballasting. The bridge for my new layout is open deck, which is prototypical for my location, I think also makes a more interesting model.
  23. The timber loads are removable, load in empty out, just noticed load not square on the flat car.
  24. Have just exhibited at Watford, an enjoyable day, no problems with the layout, only its third time out, the last of my 20 year old, Digitrax Buddy controllers packed up, by chance the stand opposite had a second hand one, prefer the old style to the current one.
