  1. A whole subject to get correct for your chosen period and location! as a child in the 60s we had a large H shape aerial on a wooden pole in the garden, I can remember the first "BBC2 type" aerials appearing, it was quite a status symbol.
  2. Not just Europe, in my last job two of my work colleagues, both from The Gambia, spoke different languages, they could only speak English together.
  3. Seen these at Shapeways, 16 for £11.71 plus postage.
  4. I had a Canon refillable printer, the only problem was when the print head blocked, I did try all the cleaning cycles and tips on You Tube, nothing worked, a new print head was more expensive than a new printer! at least with the normal expensive ink cartridges they each have their own print head, either way ink jet printers can be expensive to run.
  5. Could be open deck, rail supported on timber baulks, or closed deck, with normal ballasting. The bridge for my new layout is open deck, which is prototypical for my location, I think also makes a more interesting model.
  6. The timber loads are removable, load in empty out, just noticed load not square on the flat car.
  7. Have just exhibited at Watford, an enjoyable day, no problems with the layout, only its third time out, the last of my 20 year old, Digitrax Buddy controllers packed up, by chance the stand opposite had a second hand one, prefer the old style to the current one.
  8. Plant City Florida, HO scale, taken at the recent Watford Exhibition.
  9. I think it is good, that today we are more aware of these considerations, historically some areas non white people were not uncommon, a friend who did research on Medway Sailing Barges found the census of 1891, 1901 and 1911 showed a surprising ethnic diversity in the barge crews moored at Rochester on the census day, being a port city maybe crews from around the world, left their ships for whatever reason and found work locally. On my Florida based layout l have tried to reflect the current diversity.
  10. For the PO experts, comments on this photo, Bolton 1922, Britain from Above. complete with propped up door.
  11. Anyone thinking of setting up lasting power of attorney, either for health or finance, should not delay, our health ones took six months and the finance ones are in the final stage after eight months, the Office of the Public Guardian, is very slow, probably under resourced.
  12. When I was working, standing with two ex Army work colleagues, something came up about the Falklands war, I was expecting some insight, one looked at me and said he was not born then, the other a Gurkha was still at school!
  13. Plant City, loaded and ready for Watford, its first general exhibition, looking forward to it, an incorrect photo is shown above.
  14. Just back from a regular trip to Germany, something I always find awkward, especially driving a van, in busy cities at traffic lights, turning right, the lights go to green, but there is also a flashing red, which means you can go but pedestrians and cyclists have right of way to cross, difficult to see them and some cyclists are fast, similarly as a pedestrian it makes me jump every time, I step out on a green signal and a car comes round the corner, some not very willing to stop. I think driving standards there, are very similar to the UK.
  15. Just remember the 49euro ticket does not cover IC trains, our recent experiance is that connections can be unreliable, still a bargin ticket.
  16. When I first looked at your BLT I was impressed but since seen some real ones in my local supermarket, cannot see one exactly the same, which made me wonder, is yours a representation of a real BLT, with documented proof, or is it merely generic.
  17. WOW amazing 3d printing.
  18. The opening sequence of "Bad Day at Black Rock" with Spencer Tracy made in 1955.
  19. Must say I prefer a simple display, that I can either skip over, or read, or look at, I like maps, I find an AV display tedious to watch, if you want to study a particular photo you have watch the whole thing again.
  20. Good tip, have been using something similar for years, so handy, wooden clothes pegs also, I glue them to the underside of my baseboards to hold cables out of the way during transit.
  21. Good point, when I bought my current vehicle, a long wheelbase Transit Connect, I thought I had loads of space, the first time I used it for an exhibition, my 13' by 4' layout only just fitted, with all the other bits and pieces, I only ended up with a long wheelbase because I wanted an automatic, and that was all that was available, a near miss!
  22. Build what you like, you will never build a layout that everyone thinks is good, we all have personal preferences, lots of good advice above on the the practical side, I find the general public will take an interest in all layouts, but some modellers will dismiss a layout out of hand, or even be rude, if it is not their particular interest, scale, location, company etc.
  23. A couple of tips, slightly different search terms, may produce other photos of your location, if your target does not come up try nearby locations and look at the edge of the photos, as said most are high resolution, my particular location was never photographed as such, but some excellent images were found in the corner of photos of a new factory being built nearby.
