  1. Dear RMWeb, Please can I get opinions on what is the best material and method with which to create door hinges on OO brass coach sides? Many thanks, County of Yorkshire

Some etched coach side conversion kits come with hinges- perhaps someone might have some left overs ?

      If not try www.hurstmodels.co.uk

Ask in a forum post. Status updates will be pushed off the bottom of the list and people won't see this question so can't reply.

  2. So tempted to buy a third at that price. Alas, if it came with a Collett tender coiffed in the same livery, then I'd probably max-out the overdraft and snap up half a dozen... CoY
  3. Spent a strangely therapeutic evening renumbering some Hornby Choc & Cream Hawksworth TK's & BTK's to numbers known to have existed prior to 1/1/48!

  4. After being a lurking viewer of the tour thread last year, I think I would regret it if I didn't at least try to move heaven and earth to get down to Oxfordshire from Yorkshire. Could you put me down as a provisional 1 please? I'd be very grateful. Cheers, CoY
  5. I thought they shelved the planned expansion of Snowdon Summit Station? Lovely mixed freight by the way. The LNER box vans and the LMS CCT are superb models aren't they? Do we think we'll get anything to the same spec from Swindon in the near future? CoY
  6. I thought I'd just ask again: is this soldering iron suitable for constructing brass coach kits? Is the wattage and heat of the right level to do so? Haven't soldered since I was 14 and at school, so I would really appreciate an informed opinion! Thanks, CoY
  7. Hi, I am currently attempting similar RTR conversions with Comet sides and so have been following your blog with both admiration and interest. I am practically a beginner when it comes to working with brass, therefore may I ask what you use for the door hinges, and how do you go about affixing them to the side? Do you 'slot' the holes, and if so, what implement do you use? I am currently in the early stages of overlaying Comet sides for the C70, C73 & E152 diagrams onto the Bachmann sunshine coaches, which will hopefully give my rakes some much needed variety! Any advice would be much appreciated! Cheers, Jon
  8. I've a gut feeling that, given what is stated on the website re: "We have products planned that have previously been produced, but need updating", that we might well see a GWR Dean Goods in the not too distant future? I think such a long-lived, venerable and characterful prototype would have a large appeal, and would really lay down a marker for their plans of range expansion. Though yes, new freight stock designs for the pre-1948 period can only be a good thing for modellers of the period. Exciting times! CoY
  9. As I've stated elsewhere, I believe Hornby recommend a rake of these: http://www.Hornby.com/shop/new-for-2015/railroad/gwr-4-wheel-coach.html I've currently got 15 on order to hang behind my castle for the Paddington to Temple Meads express. Given the lack of a brake vehicle, I'm not sure what the operating department will have to say about it though. Cheers, CoY
  10. Can't believe that I saw a Bachmann Hall at a swapmeet today for spares/repairs- the reason? It had genuinely been run-over by a steam roller! :-D

It obviously didn't pass the test on the rolling road.

  11. Acquired a second Hornby Castle 5075 'Wellington' before they inevitably sell out in the near future. You can never have too many Castles!

Was just thinking about that Rob. Limited by the tender/cylinder cover combination. I'm in love with the idea of 'Hurricane' (favourite WW2 aircraft) but would need a Collett tender. Looking at Montgomery or Brecon Castle at the moment!

Hurricane had a Hawksworth tender in 1952.

  12. Anyone think that this would suffice for constructing brass coach kits? Cheers, CoY
  13. Would anyone endorse the use of 0.5mm brass wire for handrails on a comet coach side? Can't source 0.45mm locally...

Yes that's fine.Eileens do .45 if you see them at a show.

I use both brands. Both are quality paints.

Halfords list is badly out of date. Russet Brown is not a match for Chocolate. Holts Russet is a match for Austerity Brown tho.

  15. Will a Archimedes drill suffice for drilling 0.45 & 0.5mm holes in etched brass sides?

  16. Has finally dived into working with brass and ordered coach sides for some RTR upgrades... Let's hope I can add a C70, C73 & E153 to my coaching fleet!

The Bachmann Colletts. Picked up two C77's and one E159 for the purpose. If these go well I might become more adventurous - corridor composites and brake thirds may follow! Lack of GWR stock in Hornby's announcements has finally forced me to act.

I did a K40 using an Airfix b set and it worked well.

  18. Chaps, I've been tempted to acquire another 'Wellington' for renaming purposes as well - and I think my mind is made, given the absence of a GWR Castle in Hornby's 2015 annoucements... Castle of this parish posted the following on December 13th last year. I'm sure he won't mind me copying this in below: I was alerted to this by OTBL and I have sent this list to him via PM but incase it's of interest to others, here we go. As far as the Hawksworth tender in the GWR era goes, the engines I can find (date of fitting in brackets) are 4083 Abbotsbury Castle (1946), 4085 Berkley Castle (1946, notorious as the engine that ran down and killed Churchward!), 4092 Dunraven Castle, 5000 Launceston Castle (1946), 5016 Montgomery Castle (1946), 5022 Wigmore Castle (1946), 5023 Brecon Castle, (1946), 5038 Morlais Castle (1946), 5077 Fairey Battle (1947), 5085 Evesham Abbey (1947) and 5087 Tintern Abbey (1946). There might be others but I'm tired so there we are - best look under the circumstances! The first built with a HW tender was 7008 Swansea Castle but that was completed in 5/48, so its a bit late... http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/78537-collett-and-hawksworth-4000-gall-tenders/page-2 Given the batch that Wellington was from, I'm tempted by Montgomery Castle I think! Cheers, CoY
  19. this is simply astonishing: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornby-Thomas-the-Tank-Engine-boxed-ex-GWR-Brake-Van-Toad-R9200-/291306739401?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item43d33c16c9
  20. And I've always tried to avoid a credit card... So that's: Hattons King Hattons 58/14XX Kernow 1361 class Heljan 16XX 1366 class! Bachmann 64XX Heljan 47XX All due by the close of 2016 (on paper!) Argghh! Cheers, CoY
  21. Sorry to interject into your wonderful layout thread John, but I thought you may be interested in a couple of pictures of my wartime black Collett Goods with ROD tender. I think we probably capitalised upon the same deal ten months ago as that's around what I paid for mine - a 'silly cheap price' as I like to put it! I think this livery sits quite handsomely on the loco, it's different. Cheers, CoY
  22. All I can say is, superb! I'll probably opt for H1406 & H1407, though can anyone say for definite when the 48XX's were renumbered to 14XX's? Tempted by the wartime black 48XX but I don't think any would have survived in that livery until 1947, given the renumbering. Also I like the idea of a GWR 'range' now emanating from Merseyside. Perhaps if both the autotanks and the Kings do well, we may very well see some Churchward and/or Collett coaching stock in due course? I would probably have kittens! Cheers, CoY
  23. Two beautifully finished kit built - I believe Comet - GWR Centenary corridor thirds for just £20 a piece. I personally consider this a bargain as the Comet kits alone are £47.50 - which you can round up to at least £60 after painting, lining and transfers etc! I'm also pretty excited by these as it now means that I'm only missing the diner third and left handed brake third in order to form a full Cornish Riviera LTD set! CoY
