  1. When did crimson and cream disappear, for the most part ? I’m good for Hornby mk1’s but the passengers using them complain they are hungry....
  2. Don’t forget there’s a GWR class 150/2 still to come.
  3. The last 3 have hit my wish list hot spots, so i’ll Chuck in 2 more to make 5... Br Std 2MT 2-6-2 and 2-6-0.
  4. Is it only me left in the world that “plays trains” on an oversize train network with limited scenery ? I’ve a sprawl of lines and sidings, 4 levels, a figure 8, with 26 designated “stations”. Everything runs to a timetable, with diagrams, stock formations and locos are rostered to diagrams. I even have a list of departures per station, capacity planning all done on a database. I don’t have time for scenery and travel quite a lot, hence I can use my evenings away for planning purposes ! It looks a mess.. but it’s quite definitely organised.
  5. You know your right, I never noticed but my Aspinall 2f 0-6-0st came in a Crewe Special tank box ! Which is useful as I have one of those too, without a box. I’m seeking a cab roof for a kit Hughes 4-6-4t..which won’t be going LMS ;-) been looking for a year for one, considering chopping a Triang 3MT for one, so I can finish a part built one I found. Anyways enough diversions from me, back to 2018... how many black 5s do we expect ?
  6. Bit like me last night then ;-) Art mimicked reality. Just finished gluing coal Rails, AWS boxes and cylinders on. Completely off topic, waiting for the hail, but the new 42765 from Bachmann differs from the old, in that the cab is already painted.
  7. Saddle tank is Gem kits.I grew up watching trains at Moses Gate.. 25s/40s and 101/4 dmus and such. I have an original Totem sign from Moses Gate. I used to bug Tommy who used to work at the station booking office, back before the days they knocked it down. Then headed up to the model shop on Egerton street before it got knocked down,at the time I didn’t find Farnworth Rail and Model Centre, run by Ronnie until at least a decade after. Seen oodles of steam light engine movements in preservation here. Only ever remember two slow lines by Green lane, never saw the sidings at Moses Gate, just parked in my dads car on the space left behind. On that note, last night I got around to renunbering 3 Crabs that’s been hanging around my office for considerable time.. 42700/42820 both Bury 26D examples, and 42727 that was a minor celebrity at the end of steam.. Motivations came from.. 42727 at Bolton https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/41/Bolton_Trinity_Street_3_Stationgeograph-2161601.jpg And it’s Railtour celeb fame.. http://www.6g.nwrail.org.uk/rc42727on6g1966.jpg Yes someone painted the tank vents white !!! https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8199/8246266595_f585dca5b9_b.jpg Then 42820 ex-works condition at Bury.. http://steamworldmag.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/51.jpg And 42700 also at Bury.. https://www.rcts.org.uk/photographs/archive/380/THO/THO0074C.jpg And my efforts... What’s this to do with Hornby I 2018.. well i’m Reckoning they won’t do a crab, and hiding it here hopefully Bachmann won’t spot 42727 as an idea. ;-) I have Black 5’s awaiting the announcement from Hornby.
  8. Is having fun with Crabs... 42700/727/820 being completed.

  9. I’d look at the bargain bins at Hattons as a guide, you could buy two green ones for the price of one new one being announced. They’ve been there for quite some time. Back in the 90’s the Lima 26/27 were a hard sell too. Steady, but hard. People want 26/27 but it’s not the same demand as other classes.
  10. Here’s one user name that’s absoutely spot on for all the wrong reasons... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bachmann-BR-Standard-Class-5MT-73109-BR-Lined-Black-Early-Emblem-BR1B-Tender/162724597437?hash=item25e3244ebd:g:070AAOSwc2FZ76iE Don’t think the real ones cost that much ?
  11. I love seeing Robs pictures, they are completely refreshing, to go further, i’m Surprised none of the model companies have commissioned you for some of their catalog work, or even a calendar. Keep going, I, as I’m sure many others here, appreciate your efforts.
  12. Maybe the Hudswell Clarke could go crowd funded ?
  13. The class 24/1 still makes the cut. Probably not a bad call on the Scot, they did a fantastic job on the Patriot and it’d Be excellent to see that chassis under the Scot, on a new body to match someday, but I recall back in the 80’s and even the 90’s Unrebuilt Scots lived in the shadows on shop shelves, the older ones are still plentiful. Perhaps if the guys building the Patriot decide it needs a bigger sister (or new larger Boiler) someday..
  14. I’m looking for a cab roof, and front bufferbeam /buffers from this kit for a restoration project. Thanks.
  15. Looking to keep a model as close to factory condition as possible, but wanting early crest BR2 for a 760 BRMidland one.
  16. As a young one on here, i’ll Take the bet and double it... A class and an Aspinall 0-6-0ST (I have a second Aspinall 0-6-0ST somewhetre too),and no I didn’t buy them that way, researched and and built (or finished building in one case) then painted them, from Mike Morants site, there’s a lovely picture of 52515, leaving the loop at Bradley Fold on its way to Horwich LE for scrapping, I was born yards from that loop, but years after the line closed. 52515 isn’t strictly correct for this version, but beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to finding a kit that was stopped being made before I was. 11305 is correct as it was at Horwich, BR late crest, but LMS number carried, but in BR font, not sure the reason, but it looks to have been works pet. Both hand painted, using precision paints and numbered using Pressfix no14.. BR transfers..the sheet that is eternally unavailable, I was lucky enough to find 6 of them from my childhood days unused and good as new, about 6 months back. Smoke box doors are just plain card, coloured by black marker, and used Replica Railways Coach numbers, cut to size, 42055 uses maroon paint (as again Mike Morants site shows several like this).. I love that site for inspiration. I’m milling the idea of making a second but from a 3D kit offered on Shapeways, that fits a C class chassis. Not as good as yours Larry, but it’s not my career and i’m OK with the result, even its only plain black.. its made by a young’un who also opens boxes and mostly “plays trains” than model scenery. More A classes anyone ?
  17. Couple of close ups, showing the measurements. The Trix 81 is 2mm out from the 81 chassis, 1mm from either end will see it fit, and still leave a little overhang from the body over the bufferbeam, as per the real thing. Trix did a real good job on the bogie and wheel design, as can be seen here comparing the two.
  18. Hmm, We’ve had an LNWR 0-6-2t, and 0-8-0. We’ve had an MR 3F, and 0-4-4t to come We’ve had a GCR 0-6-0 and a 4-4-0 We’ve only had one L&Y 2-4-2t... an A class would be nice.
  19. So the last few posts demonstrates sponsoring a station does work. I’d no idea who they were, just saw the sign when I’ve passed through, now i’m educated and there’s posts talking about it. Imagine if every station was adopted/sponsored, even little used stations like Reddish South could be adopted by the local bus company, or Denton by a chip shop, even if the money goes to weeding the platform once a year, but the bigger stations won’t have a problem, maybe get B&Q to sponsor Carlisle and give it a makeover like that TV advert ;-)
  20. I’d prefer the unrebuilt Scot first. The original Patriot to me is one of Bachmanns best models.
  21. I actually think they should bin most of it. Railroad quality for modellers in the 1990s consisted of Steam older people could remember, and Modern Image that people saw every day. Both were cheap and cheerful at the time. 30 years later... Older modellers don't want railroad quality, younger modellers don't have the cash, so the current need is Modern image (21st century) that they can afford, not railroad quality their parents, grandparents and increasingly great grand parents have moved away from.
  22. Didn’t start till 10 years later in Manchester, largely due to cascaded NSE stock ;-) Despite the perils of British Rail in the 1980’s, Scotland always seemed to be a step higher In pride, presentation and reliability.
  23. Here’s a little poser of different versions of Bachmann chassis over the years. I’ve identified seven versions, from top to bottom order: 45691 Orion, with chunky wheels, on a Mainline motor. 45690 Leander, this has refined wheels. (This model is actually a hybrid from different locos) 45596 Bahamas, uses the same later style Mainline wheels, but the gear moved from the rearmost wheel to the centre wheel, and uses the can motor. 46148 The Manchester Regiment, same motor/chassis as 45596, but uses metal slide bars on the cylinders. (The metal slide bars where actually available back in 1991 when 45596,45568,5699,5721, 45552 etc were released as they were used on limited edition 5552 in Black in the wooden box, but then didn’t show again for several years). 6115 Scots Guardsman, again this is a Hybrid, it’s actually Mainline, but the chassis was exchanged for a 6134 Cheshire Regiment (and is about to be swapped cylinders for some unvarnished ones I picked up on another mongrel). In this case the valve gear, wheels and cylinders are now darkened metal, rather than shiny. 45637 Windward islands, c2008 era, this features an all new tooling, smaller firebox, but under the hood it’s a new DCC ready chassis, new tender and tender chassis. Still separately coupled the DCC plug is on the loco chassis. This chassis won’t automatically fit under the older chassis’s produced. These are easily identified as there is no Tender connector lug under the footplate (an idea for coupling loco to tender back in 1977 that wasn’t implemented but left a stub in the chassis tooling for the next 30 years). 45575 Madras, represents the latest chassis, using the circa 2008 Jubilee, but features a plug connector for the tender, which is used to house the DCC pin and sound speakers as a permanent connection. In this next picture is Giggleswick, a lastest tooled Stanier 4-6-0 chassis, and The Manchester Regiment, with the older chassis, the difference here to be drawn to, is the wheels... Scot wheels are differently counterbalanced on weights on the wheels, than the thicker shape on the Patriot. One assumes the retooled unrebuilt Scot will feature the Patriot chassis but the different wheels. Finally an example of what a swapmeet or ebay bargains bin can produce, these three came in at under £50..and once stripped, will be sold on again at probably the same price... What have we got here.. 45700 Ameythst (originally Mainline), what it’s given me is a 3rd Gen Bachmann Scot Chassis, darkened wheels. 46100 has given me a 2nd Gen Bachmann Jubilee chassis, but the tender wheels look like Gibson wheels. 45691 hasn’t given me much in this bag, but given the other two that’s ok, but not it’s with the wrong tender. What will it leave me as.. 6115 will get the Scot Chassis it deserves, from 45700, with unvarnished cylinders, 45690 will get the 6115 “Jubilee” chassis, but a cylinder swap. My 45691 (not this one in the auction) will get the chassis from 45690, so it doesn’t have chunky wheels. One of them, probably 45690 will get the a new nicely to be painted set of Gibson wheels, I have another Mainline Scot, which could use the 46100 Bachmann chassis. And what will leave me.. 45691 largely asis, 46100 now with chunky wheels, and 45700 body... and imagine it’ll fetch not far short of the £50 I paid. As no doubt there’s hundreds more doing the same as me, would go to explain why Mainline/Bachmann models made upto c2003 are subject to as much variation and “VW Beetle” style no two the same..
  24. I’ve ventured back out of the attic and dismantled my demics for closer inspection. The current three candidates I have are: 1. V1 tank, split gears, broken fitting to hold valve gear to chassis (both usual common issues) 2. 31-701, B1 61243, bowed out wheel (again common problem) 3. 31-277, Scot, 6112 Sherwood forrester (split gears). In the past contacting Bachmann I’ve been advised spares aren’t available for the V1 or Scot, v2, amongst others. Listening to the above post regarding the B1, i today took apart all 3, removed the axles and gear from each. And hey presto they are all the same. So many thanks to the Ray (Silver sidelines) above, and i’ll be ordering quite a few of these in the next few days to bring several locos back to life, and suggest making it clear when ordering the spares that it’s a generic set you want that fits the B1. The 4MT, Manor, J72 I have in my parts box are not the same gears.
  25. If you figure out getting reconnecting the main gear, under the motor pod that connects to the armature, share it.
