  1. Is there a different description/more info in the catalogue than the Hornby website? It's not clear on the website, it does say new for 2023 but not sure if that means new livery or new tool?
  2. Hattons list the Railway children version as the 2012 tooling also. Hornby website has gone to the length of photoshopping clear air above the middle splasher. Bit disingenuous, it's not that big a deal from normal viewing distance.
  3. The 2012 tooling for the 4f was loco drive, looking closely you could see the motor protruding under the boiler. It wasn't that noticeable but the contemporary Bachmann effort managed it without having gubbins where fresh air should've been. So I could understand a return to tender drive if they are incapable of improving on the loco drive one?
  4. You're probably right, I never even considered Loco kit building. I considered my wagon kit stash and scenic kits as kit building in that context. Haven't got the courage to tackle a loco kit, but one day will get round tuit. However not sure if there will be kit industry by then. Equally for most of my interest areas RTR covers most bases.
  5. Don't shout. It's a submarine not a tambourine! I think that slight bit of grammatical inconsistency may be tolerated as ultimately you're having a dig at "skimmers"
  6. Most sensible post of the day right there 😎
  7. I'm surprised by the low level of club membership, it always seems like a large number on here are club members, otherwise I'd put it down to a skew towards Rmweb.
  8. Some actual model making in progress. Making a WHL style box from the contents of the Ratio Midland box kit. The idea is from a RM article, I've soon realised the instructions in the article were more notes rather than step by step instructions, but the article gave me the confidence to go off piste for the first time so it achieved its goal. A way to go, and definitely a bit of filler required here and there, but quite happy with how it's going so far for a first attempt. (Apart from the back wall being a whole plank too low???)
  9. Not sure i've been honest with myself for money spent on the hobby per year, more of a guesstimate without any fact checking😉
  10. To anyone who has been to the states 'on business ' the difference between the regard their public hold their service personnel in and how UK armed forces get treated is alarming when seen first hand. I am aware they have plenty of issues, but make do and mend has been a Brit thing for ever and a day.
  11. Hopefully someone more knowedgable can, but I've got to the point where I think the timing of the changes varied quite considerably from station to station. Which could be useful if you go multi era....... Or I could be completely wrong😟
  12. Coming on fantastically, I think you're being your own worst critic(which can be a good thing.) Thanks for posting.
  13. Cool, the track might actually be wired up and working on my pair's new stomping ground by then😎. Thanks for the update, was always a risk with everything going on and the time of year but keeping us updated is much appreciated and an effort many don't stretch to. Where's me soldering iron?
  14. Irony, the act or state of "being sort of like iron".....?
  15. EW&S for the win!😉 Seriously last time I did a modern setting (2004ish) a crabby old 37419 in EW&S was a nice counter point to the fleet of Sheds and Freds.
  16. Absolutely! With hindsight I allowed myself to be rash and get rid not just of the layout but some N gauge stock that could have tided me over until better times. I learnt and honed new construction and finishing skills from plastic kit modelling and painting skills from wargaming miniatures that are a boost to my enjoyment of this hobby. I still do plastic kit modelling as a diversion from railway stuff (as do many it seems). I knew a brilliant modeller, who modelled everything and anything, rail, military, air, fantasy, sci fi, architectural. All of it. You can overstretch yourself but equally you can pigeon hole yourself as well.
  17. Been there, done it, was frustrated with DCC issues at the time, looming job and income issues and rising costs all made me think at the time I couldn't afford to do it and sold everything up. Turned my back on the hobby. I was lying to myself, as even on the strictest of budgets several electric guitars ended up in my possession during my wilderness years. Needed the model making still though so turned my attention to wargaming and plastic kits. My eventual return to the hobby was on the cheap, N gauge US switching plank, single single 2nd hand GP40, selection of wagons. I haven't actually completed it yet, but it got me back to the hobby. I learnt I need a creative hobby whatever I'm doing and appreciate this one all the more for some time out. I had become a bit of a collector before I gave up so even now only buy the new shiny stuff if it has a justified existence on one of my projects (well, mostly) and my kit stash is much larger than before.
  18. I lost my wife and kids, all down to gambling...... I won the lottery and moved to Hawaii!
  19. Proper warships 😮, there's 2 types of ships, and all them are the first type, targets!
  20. Rogue one and Andor for me as well. Loved the Mandalorian, as well as being Star Wars it was very Space Western. Now Book of Boba Fett, I had some pretty meh vibes about, until I remembered who Star Wars was originally for and how old I was when I first fell in love with the movie. And 8yr old me would have been super stoked with Boba Fett riding a Rancor beast, trust me! 8yr old me would have stil thought Jar Jar was a bit of a door fitting though.
  21. Spent Saturday at Warley, where a few bits and bobs may have fallen into the supplies bag. Have just gone out to see if I can get to the bottom of the the point motor not working, and why my understanding of electricity is fundamentally wrong. Didn't take very long, turns out I just put the unstripped wires into the point motor terminals obviously meaning to strip and tin later on. Of couse later on was 9 months later and I'm an idiot.🙂
