  1. Looks more like Superquick each time. Marvellous, difficult to realise that its so small! Brian
  2. For those who can't remember (please stand up!), did the SR ever have a restaurant car on the appropriate Friary to Waterloo trains? Probably I am remembering the GW trains to Paddington although most of our journeys were on the Southern. Always liked Friary, a bit dark and gloomy with ghosts of the past but it was a 'proper' station while North Road was a mixture of old and unfinished new buildings at the time devoid of any atmosphere. It seems to have reverted back to this state over recent years. Brian
  3. <<The loco with the lamp is for Brian.>> There are a lot of Brians here from time to time so should it be me, as my preference for lamps stuck in the middle of the smoke box is well known and the picture is appreciated. Also its a County as well; a pity they were all gone before my time. Brian.
  4. Trivia warning! My first car was a used 1951 Vanguard. it had a the dials ahead of the driver in a pod (for want of a better word!) which was a bit bland. So I went to a local kitchen shop and obtained a roll of sticky backed paper that resembled a wood finish. Cut out the dials, stuck it down and reattached the chrome trim. Much better, and that's why I've always fancied traditional dashes. Brian.
  5. Does anyone bemoan the passing of classic dashboards? White numbers on black with a round dial on real wood! Perhaps black numbers on a silver dial? The current crop resembling a cross between a Wurlitzer and a fifties American grille with more knobs than an A380, than you know what to do with. Add an ever increasing screen which complicates matters even more (which is being reviewed as a driver distraction in government circles) and adds to accidents caused by drivers paying more attention to gadgets than their driving. Makes the idiot light seem really useful! Brian.
  6. Its bigger than I thought, now that you see it built up. Looks like a lot of scenery involved Brian.
  7. Talking of which; has any manufacturer made a 'streamlined' (for want of a better term) King or Castle? Brian.
  8. There's not a lot of difference between a preserved line and your average layout, especially a BLT. Doesn't go very far, limited amount of stock small locos. Even a twenty mile line is limited and that's large compared with the usual around six mile line. Brian.
  9. There's more than one way to end ones life if that is the wanted end result. None of them very tempting but that someone's son / daughter / father / mother / husband / wife could have considered the consequences of their last action and the impact it had on others who are still content to live a normal lifespan. Brian.
  10. Must be summer as everyone is dressed for winter and it looks as though its still raining though the kiosks are open for potential business. The question is, why would so many go to the seaside in such weather? Wakes week? Brian. Used to drive a Ford van like that one!
  11. Probably because its so small but its so good, its hard to believe it is so small! Brian.
  12. Oh dear! Boys were boys and girls were girls. Those in between were either actors or artists and one didn't talk about them which is more than likely how they liked it as they went on to great things. Think of the great actors of the last century, when most were aware of their orientation and didn't really care about it. Those who were apprehended, from Oscar Wilde onwards seemed eventually be accepted for their works and not their indiscreet sex life. Engines, ships, cars and other male toys were always referred to as 'she' as possibly they were held in as high regard as their mothers, girl friends or wives. The Rev Awdrey was brought up with all this, hence his writings, which have been highly appreciated for years and which will no doubt continue to be appreciated long into the future. Brian.
  13. Regardless of the situation, if at all possible a circle will be useful for long running in and just train watching! Brian.
  14. Referring to tinplate coaches, Dublo mainly pre war as in O gauge as well, they usually hold up quite well under normal use. Trying to find mint items is a n expensive chore so I settle for if it looks OK, then good enough. On these, the tinned windows are the worst problem as even a few scratches tend to show up whereas its not so noticeable on a coloured surface. As has been mentioned, the real thing wasn't mint for very long! Brian.
  15. Recently some of my replies on various subjects have disappeared, one in response to this thread.. Definitely non controversial or adversarial so what happened? Brian.
  16. There is an interesting reference about this railway in the new book: Plymouth's Hidden Railways. Brian.
  17. One look at some installations over here would make you cringe; most of my Lionel transformers have a 110V two pin plug. H & S would have a field day! Brian.
