They shouldn’t, but the model is out there now, and moaning won’t get it fixed.

As far as I know, smokebox door handles are available from a number of sources.

    Who's moaning exactly?

Not me as I won't be buying and will wait for one of the new manufacturers to produce a better representation of the 8F.

I'm just pointing out the obvious!

I wonder if it’s possible to replace a moulded smoke box door handle with a separately fitted one?  Nah, surely not.

But why should any prospective purchaser have to replace parts on a new loco costing £225 discounted?

  3. Having seen this latest Hornby release today at my local model shop, I think I'll wait for one of the "New Kids on the Block" to produce an all new 8F.

IMHO, very much an open goal!

Just to bring my 60009 story to a close - the model was returned to Hornby and they weren't able to fix it and had run out of stock. The Bluebell shop refunded it today (very good service as usual, pre-ordered a couple of Rapido O1's). Hornby think there is a batch that may have been dropped...

Managed to get Dominion of Canada from Derails, which has absolutely no problems at all. Will go well with the Coronation coaches when they arrive.

    Regards,

    Dan

A similar experience to yourself Dan.

I returned two 60009 Union of SA models from two separate sources with identical defects.

The same response from Hornby as yourself, no spare parts and they were unable to repair the locos concerned.

I cut my losses and am really glad I did, as I've received a perfect and free from defect 60008 Dwight D Eisenhower!

If I were Heljan I'd be a little concerned at the apparent lack of anticipation for these models - for those interested there are new pictures of production models on Rails website

And especially now Mike as the newly tooled Bachmann 47's are being discounted.

I might wait for the inevitable price reductions later in the year, before I add a FYE, green liveried 47 to supplement my collection.

I ran in my R3994 Golden Fleece last night as a light engine and was very impressed with it. It ran smoothly, no bits fell off and I liked the crew and the firebox glow. I did not buy the tender driven version R2101 as I did not think it would be an improvement on the Hornby Dublo model introduced in 1959. I think that the new version is better than the Hornby Dublo model but I have yet to test their haulage capacity. The two pictures compare the models. I am sorry that I did not put the Hornby Dublo version on the track properly.

A much better proposition compared to some variants of the latest Hornby  Dublo GG releases.

    Enjoy!

That is even more ridiculous. So you have packaging that works ok and then change it and it doesn't. Looking at the two sets the new one has a raised section just below the front bogie the old one doesn't. The only reason I fitted the rodding was it was getting damaged in the plastic bag every time you slide the plastic cover forward because the space is not big enough.

I did notice as well that they have stopped wrapping the inner box in bubble wrap to stop it moving inside the outer box, this is exactly what they did wrong on the W1. They saved money on the bubble wrap but damaged a fair few £300 locos.

In contrast to the 2022 HD Sir Nigel Gresley, which arrived last year in perfect condition with no issues!

I just checked my green HD Sir Nigel Gresley that I bought about 6 months to a year ago, do you know it fits with the brake rodding. Now explain that to me, change the outer packaging I can understand but the thing the loco sits in, it is the same loco for goodness sake. I can only guess they changed it to add more support.

The change to packaging could very well be the reason for the QC issues on the new HD releases.

According to the two outlets who supplied me with R30263, this is the primary cause.

I decided to fit the brake rodding on my blue Sir Nigel Gresley and found it wouldn't fit properly back into plastic "ice block". Has anyone else had this issue. Trouble is the front vacuum pipe falls off if you are not careful.

    Colin,

I don't think the packaging is designed to accommodate brake rigging, which is the reason it's supplied as an accessory part.

Hornby have always been bad of late for spare parts. If they do appear it is usually 6 months after they are released. As everyone else has said it is a contact Hornby job, I usually do the same as you try and fix it myself but on a £300 loco even I send it back to Hornby. My City of Lichfield had issues, people naively think the Dublo models are better produced, I just think that they are the same terrible Quality Assurance but with die cast bodies. Worse still, I am sure they think that most won't be run, so they don't have to try so hard.

Unfortunately for Hornby, they now have smaller competitors, who produce affordable/high quality models.

More importantly and in complete contrast to Hornby, these new boys on the block produce a catalogue of spares to support  their products should anything go wrong.

    Hi all,

I've got one of the new great gathering A4s from the Dublo range, but I've suffered a PCB failure.

It's a 21 pin but from the new style loco to tender connection models such as we see on the new P2.

I can't find a parts number anywhere and struggling get hold of Hornby, so does anyone know how I may acquire a new PCB?

I am very disappointed given how expensive the Dublo models are, and I assume a regular 21 pin PCB won't work due to the new location of the loco to tender plug on the PCB itself.

Personally, I'd return the model to Hornby as they may have spare PCB's in stock.

Failing that, try Lendons or Peter's Spares.

I'm on my second Union of South Africa, one has already been returned for defects/poor QC and the second will going back on Monday.

Disappointing as you say for such an expensive model!

    Its not the same mould.

might be the same base cad but the moulding is different on all 3 of them (A4, MN and Duchess)

The tender is the same (plastic) tooling. when you look closer to see the texture difference in the paint holding to the metal vs the plastic.. imo it sits nicer on the metal as the paint sinks into the plastic…to me thats a subtle part of the appeal of dublo.

Collectability aside, I'm thinking go with the main range A4 Golden Fleece, which as far as I'm aware doesn't have these defects!

Sadly my 60009 is also missing a numberplate on the front, looks like it was glued on, but its gone, not in the packaging at all.

The packaging is completely uncreased so I don't think its been out of the box since it was initially wrapped.

    My 60007 had no issues.

Hornby have marketed the HD Great Gathering A4's as a premium product, yet they've used flimsy/main range plastic fittings, untidily attached to a metal body.

Last year I purchased Sir Nigel Gresley in BR Brunswick Green, a perfect model in every respect.

Union of South Africa, an A4 I've been waiting for, is disappointing to say the least!

So, this might be a stupid question; but while I can see my pre-order of L&Y and GER Genesis coaches will be honoured, should I cancel my pre-order for the Andrew Barclay industrial tank?

According to the Hattons website, the exclusive range Barclays are now cancelled and won't be produced.

  15. Very sad that an modelling institution that is Hattons will be closing it's doors for good.

A big thank you to all of the staff for their advice, help and excellent customer service over the years.

I hope they find new jobs within the sector very quickly.

Snap! Only in my case the buffer beam also broke off. Must have been the packer on the production line that day as the rest of the box is totally undamaged.

Going to have to return it as the paint damage is beyond my skill to fix. The double orange lining on left hand side of smokebox is also badly applied and a bit of the paint has flaked off showing bare metal. Very disappointed considering it is meant to be a premium product. Doubly so as I bought it from the Bluebell Railway shop to help with funds.

Hornby QC strikes again or lack of it!

    Disappointing for you Dan.

I wonder how many others are like this?

Simply not acceptable on a premium £300 + model!
