  1. The Hornby TEAs are considerably higher than their Bachmann counterparts, which makes them stand out when run with Bachmann TEAs. Or Bachmann locos for that matter.
  2. Lots of questions, but hopefully you'll find lots of help here! I've not used SCARM but what you might want to do once you have the board in place is to print out the track plan and see how it looks. Running trains (or cardboard cut outs) on it will give you an idea of what fits where, and what moves are possible. Better to find issues before buying and fitting track! With regards to the controller, an option might be to visit a retailer who will be able to show you the controller and others and let you have a go with it to make sure it's right. Digitrains in Lincoln are well worth a chat to (they also attend some shows). (No connection other than a satisfied customer!) Your controller will power the track and while you can control accessories from the track as well, unless you are using the DCC signal to control accessories (like point motors, DCC ready signals etc), you will probably be better off with a separate supply. Remember too that running accessories from the track feed consumes power, something to consider if you might have lots of trains running at once. Years ago I managed to pick up a cheap Hornby booster which I use with my Gaugemaster Prodigy, the booster powering the track and the Prodigy powering the accessories. One advantage of this is that when a short happens and kills the track power, (which 99% of the time is me not setting the points right), I still have power to the accessories to move the points. I've no experience with those point motors, I use servos for scenic parts and solenoids for non-scenic, but then I like tinkering with the electrics to make them work (my servos are driven by an Arduino which takes the control signals from the DCC accessory feed). I've a mixture of Bachmann and Hornby, predominantly Bachmann and apart from a motor expiring before it really ought to have done, and niggles with the couplings on their Mk1s I've had nothing but trouble free running from all my Bachmann stock. Others may have better experience with Hornby but I've had more issues, including poor running (warranty return, wasn't much better when it came back), faulty wiring (warranty return), intermittent lighting thanks to a flawed method of electrical connection, and Mk2 couplings which are held on by nothing but willpower. With regards to scenery and buildings, there is so much to railway modelling, it comes down to courses for horses (or is it horses for courses..?) Metcalfe kits are fun to build and can be added to - for example, adding interiors, lighting and more detail like gutters, but then they can look a little samey. Scalescenes do some excellent downloadable kits and papers for scratchbuilding, and laser cut wooden kits such as those from Petite Properties allow you to really customise your builds to create buildings that are unique. Not the best video, but this is my Petite Properties church along with a ScaleModelScenery cottage (the white one) and two further PP buildings built but "plonked" for now!
  3. Perhaps they thought that the mistakes would make the railway enthusiasts otter under the collar.
  4. Why would they do that? We all know you use a screwdriver as a chisel!
  5. We visited a National Trust place at the weekend, as we were in one of the rooms a family walked in. "Which room's this?" asked the little lad. "The lounge" said his Mum "Oh. Where's the TV?" Shared a smile with the Mum as she went on to explain that in those days, people did alien things like talking to each other, reading or playing games.
  6. Had a real struggle travelling on the LNER train with my daughter yesterday. She doesn't fit in her pushchair now she's 17.
  7. If you listen to the audiobooks, is volume one quieter than volume two?
  8. It's been a while since I had the body off my 56 - 56128 - but I don't remember having to remove the bogies - just wiggled them to a point that gave me sufficient access to the screw. May well have not been perfectly straight but at an angle that I could remove it. Worth giving the contacts a clean with IPA while it's open if yours is the same as mine with the wire springs that need to make contact for the lights to work.
  9. Late to the party, but this looks excellent. Highly tempted to order (if there are any left!), but have a couple of questions.. * If I order a non-sound version, can sound be added later? I saw that Legomanbiffo lists the Cavalex 56 sound project, but with a minimum order of 5. Is that a preproduction thing or is there some form of licensing that means adding it after the fact isn't possible? * Was there any update on how the samples handle R2 curves. Theoretically, all of mine are R3 or greater but I suspect there may be a couple of cases where it's a little tighter! Thanks!
  10. After a run of printers that had lasted for only 14 months, I remember the salesman in PC World nearly falling over when I said yes to an extended warranty for the latest replacement. Typically, that printer has just run and run for over a decade! (In fairness, with one of the less long lived printers, I did get the pleasure of taking it to the tip at Bracknell, which at the time didn't have a separate section for electronics, so it just got lobbed over "the wall" which was where general waste dropped about 15 feet onto the concrete, for scooping up by the bulldozer. Now that was satisfying!)

  12. An old friend and I often bump into each other. We've both vowed to try looking where we're going.
  13. If you do decide that the ready made option isn't going to be viable, then this might help...
  14. Mate of mine started a job at the bakery. "I don't think my boss trusts me", he said "Why not?" I asked "I told him I'd mixed some dough, and he asked me to prove it"
  15. Isn't it the 88DS @The Johnster. And IIRC it's not due out until autumn, although I'm sure that's been pushed back a couple of times already.
  16. From the Hereford Models sale referenced in the Bargain Hunters thread.... Hats off to Nelson Piquet for winning in that. The aerodynamics don't look up to much!
  17. I popped in earlier in the week. It's quite a long established model shop which has new owners. Spoke to Martin there, really nice chap with a lot of enthusiasm for bringing a breath of fresh air to the shop. Already they've had a move around inside and they've got plans for more changes.
  18. Thanks for the responses. By way of an update, and to help anyone else in the same boat, I took the plunge, ordered a replacement capacitor (wasn't much of a plunge, mixed bag of 20 for just a few quid) and soldered it in place of the blown one. Onto the programming track - address read from the decoder (and it did the little motor jerks) so that was a good sign. Onto the main, turn the sound on and, sure enough it started up! Open the throttle, and yup, it moves too. So quite chuffed that it seems to be working again. Wonder if I'll get another 15 years out of it.... :)
  19. Having a running session this afternoon, I heard a bang that couldn't be attributed to the running train. And a strange smell in the air which seemed to emanate from my Bachmann 25. Found it wasn't responsive to the controls (fortunately everything else on the track worked), so had the body off and lo and behold... The decoder did return its address on the programming track, next steps are to bung another decoder in the loco to make sure the rest of it's electronics are OK. Interested in what might have caused it - presume it is just component failure. As it is a very old Loksound 3.5 it won't be under warranty, unless ESU do a repair service? Not entirely sure what the component was (capacitor maybe?), if that's what it is, would sourcing one and replacing it be worth a try, or should I just consign it to the bin? Shame, loved the sound on this one, especially while it was just sat there ticking over.
  20. In C8279, I remember 45044 being named "Royal Inniskilling Fusilier" - from having the Mainline model. There's no evidence of nameplates on the photo, so presumably it lost its name a while before withdrawal. From another photo on Flickr, https://www.flickr.com/photos/marcusgilmour/38012370316 it seems to have lost its name plates before November 1986.
  21. I'm seeing a similar issue; click the dot / star next to the forum name and it will take me to the last page but will not necessarily scroll to the first unread post. I tend to go through an index page (say UK Prototype Discussions) and Ctrl + Click each page I want to read, so they should be loading in the background but despite having plenty of time they haven't scrolled by the time I get to read the page. Seeing this in Chrome running on Windows 10. BTW on the positive side, thanks for the change made a few weeks ago to the advert display which was mucking up the Ctrl + Click behaviour!
  22. Woah, 200,000 eggs with a value of £40,000. That would be 20p each. Can't remember when they were last that price in the shops.
  23. Presumably the photo is just proof that this item is, as claimed, unpainted. So much so, you can't see it.
  24. I spent the day installing a drainpipe, but then the whole lot fell down and landed on top of me. After all that hard work, I was guttered.
  25. On a similar theme.... Knock knock Who's there Europe And you can guess the rest
