  1. Dated news: Announced last night (Monday) not to be the last. should be a good day. See you there.
  2. Perhaps Rapido should have dropped a pallet load of something O gauge off a forklift or had something O gauge that melted when the power was applied. It might then have got more attention & promotion. Announcing something into a new scale then sitting back and waiting for people to beat down the door wanting one isn’t going to (didn’t ) work. The J70 got very little promotion compared to what the 00 & N stuff gets in established market sectors. one might think it was a half baked intent in the first place.
  3. I may have an unused or unfinished Kemilway kit hidden away. I’ll look tomorrow in the early 80’s I was building all the standards and I think I had the second chassis for another loco. Well done on fitting the Portescap. I seem to recall it was designed with an X04 type motor in the tender and some horrible UJ design to the back axle
  4. Pedant point on your pedant point…. Surely the Foss Islands branch left the Scarborough line at Burton Lane Jnc and the Hull line a bit further on at Bootham Jnc
  5. Yes, there are different rules. 2nd hand items are sold on a VAT margin scheme. The principal of that is that VAT was paid when the item was first sold so VAT is only due on the difference between what they paid for it and what they sell it at. It’s a right faff and an accountants nightmare. What it means for your enquiry is there is no VAT to remove
  6. Because at the time of the rebuild into a superheated 2-4-0 her slide valve cylinders were in poor shape. Preservation at the time wasn’t up for making new slide valve cylinders, plus BREL Crewe offered to fabricate new piston valve cylinders and for the lubrication issues already mentioned and the reduced load on the valve gear piston valves were thought best. The valve gear load/wear is a significant issue. Linda has a much more butch reverser and you need two hands to notch up. Linda’s valve gear typically only does two seasons before it needs new bushes and pins. Blanche can be notched one handed and is just finishing her fourth season since a valve gear overhaul. (It does rattle a lot at the moment and is getting done this winter). Would we convert Linda? Unlikely. The degree of superheat isn’t that high and oil technology has come on a bit. Blanche got the best pair of the fabricated cylinders and they haven’t exactly got streamlined steam passages. Wear in the valve faces on Linda has been addressed with replaceable and hardened valve faces but now patterns and casting new cylinders wouldn’t be thought hard - expensive, but not hard. It does give them different characters. I’d call Linda a racehorse, on a good day it goes really well, accelerates quickly and steams like a witch but is temperamental enough to have off days when it can’t be bothered. Blanche is more of a cart horse, just plods on and gets the job done. (it’s my blog that has the K27 stuff on it, I’m an FR driver and get to drive both of them and led Blanche’s overhaul for their hundredth birthday bash. Blanche is known as “the other woman” in this household)
  7. Changing to an overset couplet such as #142, #145 or #149 will drop the knuckle to closer to the correct height and reduce the amount you need to file out of the slot in the vehicle end to get the height right You need something a bit bigger than a cocktail stick to uncouple them. Something like a BBQ skewer. I have some moulded ones i was given by Grandt line many years ago and they have two small ears on them that open the knuckles as you turn it. I'll try and find one tomorrow and take a picture
  8. Request for help. Having spotted a similarity between a commercial chassis and a Bagnall 4-4-0 supplied to the Egyptian Delta Railways I wonder if anyone can point me to more information in particular photos. I suspect it may have been discussed above but the links don't work. What i have so far is this photo & its the front loco that is of interest. The Plateway Press Bagnall book has this illustration And i was sent this GA from a source not known to me I probably have enough to make a start but a few more photos would really help. A comment above suggests they were modified a lot in service and a few photos might show how. I wonder if anyone with more Bagnall info, knows more about Egyptian Delta Railways or is just better at Google than us can point us at more photos
  9. This might be me doing something wrong or Something thats been reported already or, a twist in the setup on my PC/tablet or something to do with the great reset Whatever, i hope someone can point me in the right direction When i read a topic and get to the end of a page and click the next page number it takes me to the end of the next page not the beginning as I would expect or, as I think, it used to do. Braigfht ideas anyone. Its irritating rather than essential.

  11. During this last week White River Productions announced the launch of the 2022 0n30 Annual, expected to arrive in June, with a pre-order deal. Your UK supplier for these is me at EDM Models / NGTtrains.com and were doing the deal as well. List price will be £29.95 plus postage Order Before end of May and its £25.00 plus postage You can order here 0n30 Annual Orders Also coming soon is the second Garden Trains Annual I have a similar deal on these but as they're imminent its only on until the end of April List price will be £29.95 plus postage Order Before end of April and its £25.00 plus postage You can order here Garden Trains Order I'll finish with the reminder that these are pre-orders that will be supplied as soon as they arrive in the UK and that, because they are heavy, they come from the USA the slow & cheaper way so are available here two or three weeks after they are available in the USA or you see US based Facebook or Forums saying "got my annual". As soon as I have them I send them out
  12. I dont think there were instructions. I have sound fitted several but not for awhile so the memory is struggling but it doesn't come apart easily. Lots of little screws and if my memory serves some bit of bodywork, pipe or handrail needs unsoldering as it was fitted after the loco was assembled and solder across the divide. If you are really stuck I have one i can dig out and have a look but its not easily to hand at the moment
  13. I am interested in any pictures (or other information) regarding Peckett #1734 of 1927 `Thurwhit' which worked at Thurrock Chalk & Whiting Co. Ltd, West Thurrock which became Alpha cement and which may well be Hanson Cement now, in the shadow of the Dartford Crossing. I have the two 1963 pictures by Geoff Plumb which show it with an open cab back. Geoff sent me links to two 1959 pictures that are on flickr that show it with a full cab back. I am planning to model it and would like to find a few more pictures of it at anytime but especially from when it was open backed. I'd also like to know what happened to it. I understand it was scrapped but haven't seen when or where
  14. Well, as mod 0.55 isn’t a thing it’s going to be module 0.5 for which a 20 tooth gear has an OD of 11mm https://shop.kkpmo.com/product_info.php?info=p711_gearwheel-pinion-m0-5---20teeth.html
  15. If only it were simple….. the FR Maroon of the preservation era has come from different sources. Originally, the paint came from Masons in Derby and was rebadged LMS Maroon mix, allegedly because Garraway was an LNER man and wouldn’t entertain an LMS label. Like Phil, as a Derby based FR volunteer, I more than once collected paint from Masons to take over to Wales. This paint was brush painted. in the late 80’s early 90’s we started spray painting in a determined effort to catch up with carriage painting. The spray version if the paint was a bit redder, a bit more cherry, and was actually labelled Mercedes Red. Now we’re back to brush painting. Masons closed and the goodwill, and theoretically the colour matches, transferred to Williamson’s. Then again you only have to look at a ten coach rake to see ten variations of the colour due to the age of each coaches paint job.
  16. Check with slaters on axles. I think they do a reduced diameter one the will fit the Ixion loco. (I may have made that up from a distant memory but I know of the Ixion Fowler being rewheeled which has the same axle but it might be a different wheel centre) The gear will be a standard. IIRC it’s a module 0.5 nylon spur gear. You can check the module by calculating it from the OD and number of teeth. https://shop.kkpmo.com/product_info.php?info=p21680_spur-gear---customized-gearwheel.html&XTCsid=ph1b2jsr2uumvq0vhklbo2h4i7 this website will not only explain calculating the module but then sell you a gear. sorry the above is a bit vague but it’s been done from a comfy arm chair, coffee to hand, cat on knee rather than my model room where I might have found reference to the wheels
  17. NWSL did metal replacement gears but are sold out and apparently don’t plan to do more because…… Bachmann revised the design, increased the boss size and were, at first, giving them away to aggrieved owners. You can, or could, buy them off the Bachmann US spares website. They do go out of stock but they do seem to get more eventually. If you go there get the assembled line shaft and get some of the bearing caps. As the tool for the die cast truck sides became worn the caps stopped clipping in so they even started glueing them at the factory. If glued getting them off destroys them. For the really lazy option they sometimes have complete trucks available.
  18. The main reason is, I suspect, due to the death of designer Lee Riley. He was an On30 modeller and really championed the scale from the start cooking up the deal with the trains round the Christmas tree people to get the volume that justified producing the first set - the mogul & three coaches. He also encouraged the 3rd party suppliers. The set launched at the 1996 NG convention (might have the year wrong) in Colorado Springs and by the end of day one they had to truck more in. At that same show there were already cab kits and an On3 regauging kit. More recently I think they have lost the plot and as a result lost the modellers. Contrast this…. the Mogul was a plastic body on a really smooth running chassis which could be had for well under a hundred quid. It had no fancy electronics, just plain old DC. It came to bits easily, if you wanted to modify it a scalpel and file sufficed. Lots of small traders made kits to modify and alter them. the recent stuff. Odd prototypes. Die cast metal. Stuffed full of electronics. Price the wrong side of 300 quid. If you could afford one dare you modify it? You’d need a hacksaw anyway.
  19. This said very tongue in cheek and smiling (to myself at least) "oh look its Smokey Joe"
  20. Mol, next time your at Blodge go see Warren in Minffordd for a masterclass on boiler forming.
  21. Screws is the short answer. Because they need them to be slippy for the coupler to move side to side the coupler box is made out of slippy plastic. A side effect or design feature of this is it doesn’t stick well and solvent glues don’t melt it. If you have to go with glues look for ones that claim to work with Delrin and make sure you scratch the face of the coupler box to give it a key.
  22. Testors Dullcote is no longer exported from the USA. In November 2019 Testors withdrew the product completely. This caused a fuss in the USA and their revised plan was to withdraw international sales. The two UK wholesalers, and thus the traders, received the last delivery in December 2019. It sold out virtually instantly. I suspect it won’t be long before it’s dropped altogether as it’s made of evil anti planet solvents.
  23. Well, I've been proper rubbish at up dating this page with EDM Models information. I'll do the same as everyone else and blame Covid19/Brexit/Driver shortages etc Anyway, the shocking news is that we're attending our first exhibition in 18 months next Saturday 16th October although it is a bit of a limited event. 7mm Narrow Gauge Association Exhibition Saturday 16th October, The Town Hall, Burton upon Trent 10am – 4:30pm Please note this is an all ticket members only event. Tickets must be obtained in advance This is our first show since January last year. It is members only for the 7mm NGA but it’s our first chance to get together in 18 months. We’ll be there with limited sales and a comprehensive display. All I have to do now is remember where I stashed all the show stuff
  24. Sculptamould is basically paper fibres (posh papier mache) and does take awhile to dry out as it sets by drying rather than the chemical reaction you get with plaster based products. As previously mentioned the setting/drying time depends on how much water you used in the mix and the environment its drying in. What you will get for your patience is a lightweight but hard shell. If you are building scenery over forms and the like here's a tip. Pop along to your local charity shop and ask if they have any discusting net curtains to chuck away (they often have becuase most net donated is not fit for sale). Form your rough shape with wire mesh or screwed up newspaper. Cut the nets it into strips, make a wet mix of Sculptamold, dunk the net in it and massage it so the goo is through the mesh. Lay that on your forms, add several layers massaging it all together and let it dry, As it was a wet mix it may take awhile but what you will get is a hard shell that is featherweight compare to plaster products and one that doesn't need the supporting newspaper anymore
