    I'm glad you've updated this topic Al.

     

    It's a while now since I've looked in on your Blogs and this post is a most helpful reminder that it was your work on Paynestown Mark 2 which put me onto British Finescale products in the first place. As a result I've got my own new layout Upper Hembury under construction in Finetrax OO so a huge thank you is in order. My tracklaying is nearing completion and reported on here.

  3. I think I might have sent you that photo as I did some frame captures from the old colour TV show on the WC&PR. I know I have an identical image in my photos and that's where mine came from. Unless it is one remarkable coincidence! Great to see the progress you've made returning to this project, the coaches have come up very well with the rework.

     

    Pity I can't be there in October 12,000km is a tad to far to travel. Hopefully the group will put out some good photos after the event.

  4. While I don't know the Dapol product, they look remarkably like Kadee couplers which have been around for ever. You haven't mentioned your scale, rather important in this context.

     

    There is a whole wealth of info, much on Youtube about DIY Kadee uncouplers. There are pluses and minuses but when you get it right, it is very effective.

    I've done a lot of my own research and have a DIY solution which works with Kadees but with other things ongoing mean it's not yet written up on here.

    Thx for your interest. Unfortunately with the Web issues my blog components are all over the place and still missing many photos which I'm hoping don't need my further intervention to restore. I try to keep my sidebar index up to date to aid navigation

     

    As WC&PR clearly is of interest to you it may be worth coming back in a couple of weeks as I've considerable info / pics on all my wagon builds and with others' help have identified wagons sometimes mis-assigned by others. The missing Pics are essential for this.

     

    The Coach triple set #15-17 is work in progress, stalled for far too long but not that far from completion if only I could find the right gear!

    Bill (Longchap) just directed me to this work of yours.

     

    I'm interested in Weston-super-Mare as it's my hometown I was delighted to learn about the former Stables and a quick search of Britain by Air turned up a great photo from 1920s showing the stables face on at the back of the Goods Precinct bordering onto Locking Rd. An archive link confirmed this was it's location.

  7. Hi Richard,

     

    nice to hear from you, I've enjoyed browsing your site from time to time.

     

    There are 6 * 220uF Tantalum above + a further 1 below and a 470uF electrolytic so approx 2000uF on board. The bunker and rear tool box space is deceptive, viz, it is one open space so once you dispense with the modest 5g weight and carve back the plastic a bit all the caps fit snugly there. The SACC16 Stay Alice control is very small and stands upright in the front of the cab leaving room for crew on both sides. I surprised myself at how much I managed to fit in.

    Yes, wouldn't life be so much easier if we had one of those :)

     

     

    I've a video somewhere of the notorious Hornby Class 48xx 0-4-2 which after my treatment with wipers, Stay Alive etc. runs seamlessly over those same curved points. Must go looking for it! I'll keep you posted.

  9. Hi Mikkel,

     

    my layout has insulfrog points (an early poor decision, pity there's no "undo" option). The most troublesome e.g. double curve have long dead spots and I've found the edge wipers to give more reliable performance than the standard type. They're also much easier to keep clean and retain their tension better. I've taken to fitting these wipers to all my 0-6-0s and similar locos. Couple that with a decent stay alive and locos will crawl across anything.

    As to wire I'm rather limited by what was on offer at Wizard, viz 0.33mm and it's a long wait until I'm back in the UK.

  11. Hi Al,

     

    I've come back to this post as I'm facing a similar problem with an old Hornby 48xx. Although one of the better versions in many regards (2008 vintage) it still suffers from less than perfect wipers.

     

    Step 1 I've replaced the driving axle + their traction tyres with one + plain wheels from an Airfix. That went well and performance on a Rolling Road now is 100% but when you get to track, the side to side motion highlights the wipers' weaknesses.

    Step 2; I have some PB wire on its way and thought your design would be good. Easy to apply from beneath whereas wipers from above would have to avoid shorting all the metal weighting materials.

     

    My question relates to maintaining tension against the wheel rims on your Pug when there's side to side movement. Is there enough tension there for the wipers to follow the wheels sideways since the tip sections are (mostly) not parallel to the axle.Any helpful guidance will be appreciated.

     

    There's probably enough space in my model to take wires up from beneath. If I did that do you think wires along the tires would be better than the edge wiping you're using?
