  1. I’m not a structural engineer or a bridge designer, but my gut feeling is that if there were a central girder it would have been two separate bridge decks, one each side. Paul.
  2. If you have to ask “How much?” you can’t afford it! Paul.
  3. Which takes me back to my short period as a SME (signal maintenance engineer) and the newly replaced switch diamonds at Greenhill Junction. They had been installed with the “gauge” measured across the elbow joints (i.e. not perpendicular to either set of running edges). The result was that whenever a train ran through there was a creaking groaning sound as each wheelset passed through the elbows. The PWME did what he could but needed a complete relay to sort it properly. They aren’t there any more, but it was probably 25-30 years before they went. Paul. P.S. My techs reckoned it was about 10mm narrow to gauge at the critical point and the tolerance they had available for adjustment was only 8mm . . . !
  4. 1524mm to proper proper engineers... Which makes me a proper-ish proper engineer as the dimension on the plan is 1520mm. And any more significant figures than 3 would be a false claim to accuracy! Paul.
  5. And while you're waiting, don’t forget to keep up to date with what the rest of us are, or are not, doing. Sez he who hasn’t posted on his own topic since New Years Day! Paul.
  6. Fallen into the same trap of having nothing moving for too long. I recognise those trees! Wouldn’t care to say how many times I’ve viewed them over thirty years. Interested to see curvy Kadees. I’ve managed to keep most of mine on straight to do what I need (I hope). I do have some to add on 5’ radius curves when I get further on. Paul.
  7. Must use the same software as the UK Rail seat reservation system. Paul.
  8. It’s the getting back that’s a little difficult. Paul.
  9. LEGO weren’t like that when I were a kid! Had it been, I could easily see myself having got into doing your sort of stuff with it. Enjoy the journey. Paul.
  10. Perhaps they plan to look later and see which bits are bent and then look for what bent it! Maybe it came via Brum, then (in theory) little problem ‘til after Tyseley. Paul.
  11. Corrected the quote for you Cap’n. Paul.
  12. I was only there on the Saturday! And anyway, I’m only a late comer to the Newhaven Harbour team, although I do rather enjoy being Harbour signalman. Paul.
  13. It’s not a wonky M it’s a wonky W. Clearly, I stand on the opposite side of the rodding run to you. :-) Paul.
  14. I’m one of the xtrack cad users on here too. I did it that way too - you soon develop ways to do certain things. Then you find out that there was an easier way! It suits me for what I want to do, which is why I like it. Paul.
  15. I have a couple of ribbed coaches. Since you know my main interest in modelling, you won’t be surprised to hear that they will be remaining ribbed for the time being. I’ll just pretend they are not there. Paul.
  16. Sad to hear this too, despite the inevitability. Condolences to the family as they come to terms with his absence. It doesn’t seem that long since he retired and was looking forward to more time for modelling. One good thing was his faith the hope that gave him for the future. Jonathan: Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory. Paul.
  17. I see no silver bullets. :-) They do look good though. Paul.
  18. I managed that too! I think I converted sone of them back by duplicating in the iPhone after I had reset the settings which copied as .jpg (though might have been the iPad). Paul.
  19. Saw your question over on the signalling forum so came here to have a look. The SRS Swift publication isn’t going to help much as it shows signals in the same places as in the photo above. Answering your question, in each direction you have a distant signal, home signal and starting signal. The home and starting signals are the same bit of kit as you suspected, the naming is just to differentiate which side of the signal box they are. Out of interest, the Swift publication shows miniature semaphore arms for the shunt signals, so I’d guess that your diagram is from a later date. Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it unless you’re modelling a specific year and you want it to be ‘absolutely accurate’. Paul.
  20. I believe anyone can purchase, you just don’t get the member discount. Unfortunately the SRS website was down last time I tried (hosting problems). Paul.
  21. One of the offices I worked in had a cartoon on the inside of the door saying “Do you want it done now, or done right?” It was the signalling Testers office. Paul.
  22. Super envious of your trip! Thank you for posting and thanks for the hotel link. One of my favourite rides in Switzerland is Giswil to Meiringen. Paul.
  23. Dear Cornwall County Council, please would you pay lots of money to remove permanent jobs (i.e. not seasonal) from Cornwall and send them to Devon. You know it makes sense . . . Paul.
