  1. Driving abroad has never really never bothered me, it's the return to the UK and having to remember to drive on the left again. Here's a picture taken from the passenger seat of our Morris Minor in the south of France. My wife was driving for the first time and complaining the brakes were really bad but I explained the car had done just over 1000 miles and pulling a trailer as well.
  2. When this book becomes a film, who will play you? As an old S&T man myself, I wish you well.
  3. I am very shocked to hear of Colin's passing. It seems only yesterday we had a long conversation at D.E.M.U. on all things Southern Electric and he spoke kindly of my efforts in that field. He insisted that I had been a reason for his taking up the baton. I still think he was being kind there but I thank him away. My condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace Colin John Wass Hull.
  4. If you wish to turn the clock back to say 1948, then look at "Britain from Above" pages EA017075 & EA017078 entitled the "Reading signal works". There are several other pages. There's even one with one of the four petrol powered 0-4-0 locos to be seen. I hope this helps.
  5. The four of us visiting today became five and then six. We all had a good time and thanks must go to all concerned for the organisation of the exhibition. I enjoyed talking to friends old and new and assuring them that tales of my demise are not true. I will be back as soon as I can convince my wife, Glasgow is in Yorkshire!
  6. There will be four of us from the East Riding Fine Scale group in Hull, there tomorrow as well. Leave us some bacon butties also. Ta ever so.
  7. Tea or coffee, I realty don't care being ex railway but these days I drink the latter. In my days of installing telephones the order of the day was "Don't refuse the offer of a drink from the subscriber, but you don't have to drink it"! Now if it is "beeroclock" that's a different matter!
  8. Promotion! In 1948 or there abouts it was at Goole along with several others. My guess would be, it came to Hull to see if it was suitable to work the sharp curves around the Victoria dock area. There is a photo on "Britain from above" of a class Y1, Sentinel on the link from that dock to Southcoates station. According to my copy of Ian Allen's 1948 publication there was 3 of these allocated to Hull Diarycoates and 1 to Botanic Gardens at that time.
  9. This loco was one of the Goole ones and I manage to "cop" it there. I hope the slide show goes well.
  10. Leave that one with me but if anyone reading this can help, please do. Ta ever so. John.
  11. Just whistle and I'll come a running.
  12. In the 70's when I was with Hawker Sidderley at Brough working on Buccaneers, (thus the advat) the factory always closed down at noon on Fridays. The it was a race to catch the Doncaster- Hull train as apposed to the Brough cattle train. One Friday morning we had visit from an old friend who had left us to work elsewhere. He just walked onto the train in Hull and then into the factory at Brough! Our charge-hand noticed him and presented with a job he had not finished when he left us. "Whilst you are here, you can finish this!" was his comment.
  13. If I can tow a borrowed trailer tent to southern Ireland behind a 1098 Morris Minor then any one can! The Minor's brakes were some what tested but on the only time I had to "brake hard" the trailer's brake pulled us back. Find yourself an area where you can practice reversing and the time will not be wasted.
  14. Sorry lads, no cigar this time, it's 2006!
  15. When the Queen came to open the Humber bridge, a friend of mine made enquirers to get onto Selby station to take photos the following day. He was sent packing and that evening we tried to guess where the train would be over night. My guess was Barlow and he set off the next morning to investigate. He was stopped by the police and when they discovered he was there by guess work and he was a retried police officer himself, they called their colleagues on Selby station and sent him there with an assurance he would gain access this time as long as he promised not to tell what he had discovered.
  16. An exhibition you will enjoy, I've taken three different layouts there three times now and had a very good time, a very good time. Mind you there are some strange organizers wandering about. Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for Scotland, I've been retired again and only allowed as far as the Yorkshire borderlines but my dear wife doesn't know about the tunnel!
  17. Like me young Mike, you learn something every day but have to forget at leased three things to make room!
  18. Love the Market Weighton photo, it takes me back to our groups layout.
  19. My chiropodist uses a cordless one with a very smooth disc to trim toe nails. It really tickles.
  20. Lets get something right! I'm a WASS not a Wuss although whilst searching family history I have found a couple of the latter in our family tree but that would be because of very bad handwriting. As to scars, well I had this photo on here in the past and since then I have had a second parallel one but I'm not showing it here.
  21. Thinking back to when our money went to decimal coinage from pound, shillings and pence. A newspaper, for example, went from 3d to 3p, Would everything be cheaper if we went back after the end of March? I don't think so!
  22. What about "enormous" spiders?? I cannot type anymore as I hear her coming up the ...................................................................................
