  1. Could there be perhaps "two divisions" for the competition? One for those layouts 2m and under and the other division for those larger than 2m? This way everyone can participate? Dave
  2. BG John, You bought the book? Oh dear . . . . there's no turning back now. Welcome to the dark side. Seriously, I feel the same way as you. If this "competition" motivates me to strive on with a couple of layout ideas (yeah, I'm thinking of a second one), then how can that be a bad thing? Here's a link to the thread that has more "guidance" concerning the competition: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/122142-points-arising/ Of course the solution is . . . don't read the book when it arrives. Dave
  3. Rob, Love the stands. I've looked all over the web for similar ones in the U.S. with no luck. Is there a "brand name" on them? I've seen some on aliexpress, but that's about it. Love the way you are supporting the ends on that. Dave
  4. Although I haven't yet downloaded any of these onto a decoder, Digitrax seems to have quite the growing collection of UK "sound projects" for their sound decoders. While most likely not of the caliber of Zimo and ESU, the price seems quite attractive. Has anyone given these a go? http://www.digitrax.com/sound-depot/list/
  5. Mike, Love the progress so far and love the positive attitude. I'm pulling for you! Dave
  6. From what I can see . . . . a problem is "reported." It is looked into, investigated, tweaked, checked again, and apparently solved. Within a couple of days. Way cool.
  7. Just out of curiosity, did Photobucket have any "terms of use" or such other agreement that the user had to agree to before using the site? If so, it would be a bit interesting to see if and how it addressed such a situation.
  8. Between Revell and Bandai there are quite a number of different sizes. While a few of the kits note the scale, there was the need to check out several reviews on the plastic model websites. Revell has a 1/29 (or 1/30) kit. Both Revell (Master Series) and Bandai have 1/48 versions. Bandai has a couple 1/72 versions including one packaged with a 1/144 kit. Revell Snaptite Max has a couple of kits that appear to be around 1/50 scale while the Snaptite line has a couple that reviewers have pegged at around 1/57. My thought is to use a 1/48 model upfront with a couple of 1/50 models further back - some forced perspective. Use of 1/43 and 1/48 figures might assist the perspective.
  9. Okay, I'm in. My thought is a small Incom-FreiTek maintenance depot which makes repairs on T-65s and T-70s. Not sure of the scale/gauge yet as it depends on what donor chassis are available for rolling stock. I think I've narrowed it down to 1/48 on 9mm track or 1/72-1/76 on 9mm track. What I think will make this a bit more fun is that T-65s and T-70s are two versions of X-wing fighters. A bit off the wall and silly? Yup. But I think it will make for a way fun build - which of course is one of the objectives of this challenge/competion.
  10. Okay. I've bought the MRJ issue and the Iain Rice book (thank you Simon for the great service and fast overseas shipping). Read both. Scratched my head and did quite a bit of thinking. Looked at the shoe commercial, agreed with its slogan "just do it" and sent in the entry form. Will start the planning process for "Incom-FreiTek Maintenance Depot." Not sure yet if it will be O9/On18 (1/48), O16.5/On30 (1/48) or OO9/HOn30 (1/72, 1/76). Pretty much all depends on what donor chassis are available for the rolling stock. My thought right now is for a small maintenance area for T-65s and T-70s. Will I have a chance at "winning"? No way. Will anyone have more fun than me in doing this? Not a chance! BTW: T-65 and T-70 are two versions of the X-wing fighter. Yeah, should be fun!!
  11. Coldgunner, Let us know your opinion of them. (Like you needed to be told that lol) Dave
  12. So people who don't have fun are disqualified? Sounds like an outstanding rule!
  13. Ok, got a small package from Bath UK in the mail today when I got home. In quickly flipping through Iain's book, I can tell that, just like all his other books, I'll very much enjoy reading it and that it will stimulate more than a bit of thought. I also have to say that never having seen MRJ before, I get the feeling that it also will make for some pleasurable reading this weekend. I also downloaded the "entry form."
  14. To the Stationmaster and all who have contributed, This has been a great thread - I've learned quite alot. To be honest, I have sometimes had to re-read several posts a couple of times to fully understand, but I'll get there. I also want to say that this was a very enjoyable thread to read. Even when there were disagreements, the conversation stayed extremely civil in nature. This is the way forum threads are supposed to work. I look forward to learning more about signaling. Thanks! Dave
  15. Looking at sdw7300's picture . . . I'm guessing he'd say it was worth it if it had cost three times as much. Looks to be one of the best manned engines I've seen yet!
  16. What is a cameo layout? Such the innocent thread title. Yeah right. After reading through 12 pages of this thread and the 6 pages of the Cameo Competition thread, and several of the others, I couldn't help myself and ended up this morning on the Titfield Thunderbolt Bookshop website where I purchased Iain Rice's book and the MRJ issue 254 to learn more. Darn you guys!!! I'll probably end up trying to build one of 'em too.
  17. rovex, jamiel and red devil, Excellent job on those structures! I've been playing around with several Walthers and DPM kits trying to figure out how to Britishize (is that a word lol) them. Y'all have provided me some excellent material to start with. Thanks!
  18. I have to say that footbridge is simply stunning! Can't wait to see a GWR or Southern in 7mm!
  19. But are those the most profitable models? That is the key issue that we don't have sufficient information on. Just a thought.
  20. Stan, We must have been typing at the same time, of course you beat me to the "post" button. lol Dave
  21. Has anyone approached any of the hobby shops to commission a run of whichever Pecketts "are in demand" from Hornby? It would seem to me that if there really was such demand for any given model that Hornby would be incompetent in not putting its own money up, then that would leave an opening for someone else to make a tidy profit.
  22. The Peco announcement said that the "tool-making for which is about to start." Does that mean that PECO is still perhaps finalizing the actual design?
