  3. The trouble was due to the large lap and increased travel of valve. It had come about through the increased throw and the angularity of the quadrant link. In the Walschaert gear the more lap obtained, the more work the combining lever had to do, and only a small percentage of the work was taken by the quadrant.       The broad gauge was based on a widespread misunderstanding of the dynamics of railway vehicles. Brunel's ideas on shipbuilding were fundamentally right but hampered by the limited power and fuel efficiency of the marine engines of his day.

      The ancient Medes always voted twice: if the first vote was taken when drung, the second would be when they were sober, or vice-versa. Only if they came to the same decision sober and drunk would they act on it. Seems a wise proceeding to me.
