  1. The difference is how YouTube allows people to generate income through the ads. I thought it used to be subscriber numbers but then they changed it to views per video (I may have that wrong)? Because I suspect a third of the subscribers will never watch a video of his again (like many subscribers) and people subscribe to anything. I have a channel with about 6 videos on it, three of which were showing the Hattons 66 wobble. I have about 10 subscribers. My channel is trash, why on earth anyone would subscribe is beyond me. But then I am still un-easy at things like patrons and such where people are effectively paying someone (and companies "donating" items) to review or use (or in the case of companies, advertise) something. Build a channel of thousands of subscribers (example above how easy it is to get them) and get sent free stuff - effectively having a model railway and someone else paying for it - yes please! It's quite a new business model really - I can see why there's a current demise in billboard advertising on buses. Old hat. As for the 47, I'm still bored by it as it holds absolutely no interest for me. But if it helps Bachmann get up to date, maybe they'll employ the same features in something I would be interested in.
  2. It's funny, as I've grown my own garlic, I've tended to dislike it more and more Not to worry - it'll all come out in the wash Master Hatt started in the toddler room at nursery yesterday. A little tearful as it's all new people but he now has almost free access to outside (he loves being out) and sand (which he still "enjoys" eating!). Finished printing the Labyrinth game and even printed a little card box for Uno yesterday too, which solves a problem. But this afternoon is grass cutting time again. Only did it the other day but with the warm weather, it's really grown fast.
  3. Morning all What a weird week at work. Last one today though, which is good as I'm looking forward to a few days off. Getting some more overtime in next week though - while it's there, I'll take it. Hopefully though I'll have a paid week off as every position is covered so I'm just on standby... on call if you will. First one in months as it's been summer and all. But hopefully it'll give me time to tidy the house and start painting a board game I've printed. Labyrinth - a fairly popular game where you move around an ever changing labyrinth board, planning paths to find objects. My version is now 3D. Will require many weeks of painting and planning with how the baseboard will fit right but should be quite good fun when it's done. The question is whether I then get rid of the printer and get another one that can produce smaller but way more detailed parts... that comes with complications of it's own though so maybe not.
  4. And yet in 50+ items with Hermes, I have only had one where the courier couldn't find the address, which was a weird flat in central London. But I'm fairly sure the last mile courier has a lot of influence over whether the parcel gets delivered or not.
  5. Did some tidying up in the model railway room yesterday. Put away some Accurascale buffers that I got for a fairly good price and then realised I'd fallen into the trap like many others of buying things for "the future". I never understood why people would buy something with no real plan to use it immediately as I thought it was a complete waste of money. But then I have found one item that I really could do with a few of, completely no where to be seen. I bought a few signaling items a few months back, again for about half the price they retail at, so a fairly good deal. But it means any (sensible sized) layout I build can be covered with automatic signaling control. It now means if the person who makes the control boards shuts up shop, I still have quite a few I can use. Having a look at a few buildings, small detailing packs... I have quite a lot of "for the future" things - more than is actually adorning the layout at present! Not just in the trap door but waaaayyyyyy down the rabbit hole now!
  6. There's also another aspect to this, which is whether you want to spend as much money on something. I'd like to complete my Bachmann S-Stock but no way am I paying £60+ for a coach. I could afford it but don't want to. I'd like to buy a replica Thomas the Tank Engine prop but at £1200, it's not worth that much to me. Even though I could afford it. Perhaps I'm still in the mind of value for money overriding having the product.
  7. Can anyone show any examples of people using static grass in combination with flock? I may have got the term flock wrong - I'm meaning the green sawdust stuff basically. Close up, I'm guessing the green sawdust doesn't look amazing but from a bit further back, is it okay? Cheers!
  8. It's easier when you don't have multiple of the same unit But then for my HST, I have "125" as one and "1252" as the other - don't ask which one is which! Others are usually named as the first number. My 4MT is "8002". I plan to get the new 170 in Cross Country when it comes out. My current 170 is named as that, so the new one will probably just add the following number on, if the unit is 170101, then it'll be 1701. 170398? 1703 will be it's address. But as I say, I don't have any dupes apart from an HST set.
  9. Evening all! Only one more day left at work this week. Thinking of taking a trip to London to pay in some old money. Yes, "old money" - a fairly descriptive term I would have thought. But upon visiting various post offices, after being assured they would take it if I was paying it into an account, I have come across all sorts of terms - non-circulated, invalid, not current... not sure why all three post offices seemed to be confused with the term "old" money" - what else would you think it meant?! But after four unsuccessful tries at paying it in, including one person who called their supervisor who said they can't take it, and a branch in another town flat out saying they can't take it and only "crown post offices would" - failing to tell me where the nearest one is. While I've been on a Class 180 before, as they're now so close to home, I may take a (free) trip to London on one (hopefully not breaking down on the way!) and paying all this in to the Bank of England direct. Weirdly seems like the route of less hassle. The only downside is it'll be a few hours of my life I won't get back :/ But I'll only waste it computer gaming anyway. Now to head back a few pages and catch up.
  10. Not all warehouses work the same though. I've worked in two that had completely different picking techniques. But what we're saying is that if Hatton's isn't actually picking Item 1 from the box of Item 1's and putting it in a "trunk" elsewhere, then their system is rubbish because it could be picked and sold to someone else? Even though you've already paid for it? I wouldn't think that's a good idea. If they move Item 1 to another area of the warehouse in a "trunk", then surely it's sold stock simply being stored in the warehouse. Does this need to be audited? Surely the system will know what's been trunked and what hasn't? Although all this is just guess work unless @Hattons Dave decides to tell us how it works a bit more. I'm not sure I understand the point in the whole system if you can buy something (meaning Hattons get your money in their bank NOW) but when you ask for it to be shipped a little later (which isn't unusual with things like sofas - being able to delay delivery by a year or more), then they say it's no longer available? If the trunk system isn't reliable, is there much point?
  11. Also, for future use there's this website to check if the website is "down for everyone or just me": isup.me
  12. This came up recently. I think I fitted mine down the side when putting the body back on but can't be entirely sure. They changed the location of the blanking plug but didn't update the instructions on my version.
  13. Sorry to bump this but I posted something similar a while ago. Surprisingly, there isn't anything currently available so building your own seems the way to go.
  14. I thought the "trunk" was a completely separate area of shelves so surely this wouldn't be counted as any stock take as everything there is sold? https://www.hattons.co.uk/newsdetail.aspx?id=777 That's what I gathered from the picture. Although perhaps the picture is just of their warehouse and that's how they store items, which I'd say is a little mis-leading.
  15. From: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/166210-Bachmann-announce-new-class-47/&do=findComment&comment=4553467 Interesting thought here. With the advent of technology, especially with the plug in and play of DCC, has the modelling aspect of model railways gone? Yes, there's still trees to plant or stations to build but there's a lot more choice of ready made buildings now. Space in homes is also a consideration and with model railways becoming an ever decreasing hobby, has is now just become a collectible market instead of a "build and create" market? Or are there different levels of the hobby (like any other?). You get those who ride push bikes around their county yet others who rarely ride but restore bikes from by gone years. Are both hobbyists? Is model railways a hobby or a luxury? The obvious answer is a bit of both, and while it doesn't have to be, for many it is an expensive one (although is there a cheap one these days?). For the purposes of the thread, modelling would be customising or creating something physical in some way... examples include creating a tree from scratch or weathering a loco, but may also include creating a scene with a pre-modelled tree. Essentially, plonking down a pre-fab building and a few platforms isn't really modelling per se but adding details or enhancing that prefab in some way could be classed as modelling. Difficult to quantify.
  16. Sorry, just bumping this again - without a regular boring editor, how can I quote a post from one thread in a new thread?
  17. What a rubbish weekend Master Hatt has been off nursery poorly since Thursday. Felt really sorry for him standing in front of the toilet getting some in, most down the side... but he was just standing there in his PJs - poor guy! Then Mrs Hatt got really poorly on Saturday. I was able to help her. Then I got poorly on Sunday night - twice. One of those episodes the worst I've ever experienced... think nose Sorry. But we're all getting better now. At work today as it's a late shift and feel loads better. Mrs Hatt is nearly all cylinders firing and Master Hatt still has a slight runny rear end but that could be down to yet more teething. At least our summer is over (in terms of annual leave and such) so we can fit back into some sort of routine again. Need to dust off the model railway at this point.
  18. Maybe it was just a lot of rumour but: Reports say that it's "officially paused". However struggling to find an official source. As for the 47's, I'm not that surprised. Looking at the standard of models, time to re-tool a definitive version I guess. Just a shame that it's re-tooling of an already released version instead of producing something new.
  19. Afternoon! A little late today. Here's a story: Mrs Hatt's car went in the garage the other week for a service. All done. My car went in a week later for it's MOT. As Mrs Hatt went out to pick up Master Hatt, she broke down. Right at a super busy junction, put foot on the clutch and it just went down... nothing. Considering I'd used it just that day to travel to work and back, it was fine. I was just picking my car up when she called so I went to rescue her. Then called the garage out as it was clearly broken. Had an old 02 plate Focus from the garage, while they had Mrs Hatt's car in. Drove to work yesterday was fine. Get back to the car and the rear wheel... flat as a pancake. *sigh* However, I managed to change it fairly easily with the small scissor jack. Luckily the garage called to say Mrs Hatt's car was ready so swapped them. Driving at 50mph on the motorway is not fun though. Especially when you still get cars up the rear end... despite there being another lane to overtake :/ At least I got home okay.
  20. Understandable but save money each month anyway? I am completely against announcing stuff and then waiting for years. Yes, the 158 probably had other delays but they've still only released two liveries. The 170 - announced but then cancelled. Bachmann's model of announcing when they're practically ready means the wait is considerably less. Plus, you'll still have a few months to save - even up to a year before they all start disappearing.
  21. Why not just set up a normal free current account? I dropped my middle name from loads of stuff now. Only my original first ever bank account and the DVLA know it now. Many banks don't have any requirements to hold an account (although many will push their subscription based / chargeable accounts).
  22. Can someone tell me the Hornby Magazine number for the Class 66 stuff? May see if I can pick a 2nd hand copy up to give it a read.
  23. Good morning all. Been a busy few weeks for me. Doing nothing particular, just work and cleaning around the house. Had my 2nd jab yesterday. Not sure I understand why people don't want to have it. If anyone can tell me how a liquid is supposed to "track" people... unless they think a microchip is inserted at the same time? But then it won't have power so can only be "read" by something. Where are all these "readers" going to be? Far too much thinking for me to bother with.
  24. I'm pretty certain this particular loco is a Lenz. It's a very old loco with traction tyres, which doesn't help but difficult finding replacements without tyres at the moment.
