  1. The message should be that Crowdfunding should be done properly, with protection all round. I've supported 7 or 8 Kickstarter campaigns and all have come through fine, with no problems. Some are established in crowd funding, others it was their first time. Would I support through Kickstarter again? Hell yes! Would I simple give money to someone who hasn't got any contractual agreements in place? Not a chance! Yes, I appreciate Kickstarter things can go wrong, but there is a world of difference between a successfully funded (and sometimes 600% over funded!) campaign and little Jimmy saying he'll make something.
  2. But with no examples, can't really help. I uninstalled a bunch of apps and things when I first booted Windows 10. I have NEVER had any app install itself. Help us to help you: Take a screenshot of the list of programs you have installed. Take a screenshot of the processes that are currently running under your username - press CTRL, ALT and DEL keys together - the screen should have some options in the middle. Choose "Task Manager". It'll pop up a window. Arrange the list by NAME by clicking on "Name". Finally, click on the "Start up" tab and take a screenshot of that too. Three screenshots we need to help you. Can't help without those screenshots. You can continue to wrongly think Microsoft is "doing something funny" but without a doubt, they're not. Note to self: Geek uninstaller / Startup CPL
  3. Zeemo? I always pronounced it Zim-o :/
  4. Rich, if you DO give this a go successfully, please let us know
  5. I couldn't find the picture on the Hornby forum. Will look again later today and repost here.
  6. The Tesco Metro near me asks if you want one. As it's a Tesco Metro, most people are buying snacks so don't particularly need an extra bit of paper. I'm all for it! While paper is recyclable, not havig to cut the tree down to make the paper in the first place will ultimately be better. However, for some companies that say "can we email you the receipt?" - what, and market me loads of information too? No thanks - I'll just not have one!
  7. No - because that's the reason you moved You like the house more than the one before. Remember, everything has a "priority" list - a list of options and preferences. When buying train tickets, you generally get the fastest or cheapest. So people have to decide what is their top priority - speed or cost. You decided living slightly further away from work is lower on your priority list than having a nicer house. Most people make these choices without really thinking about it. When choosing how to pay, contactless / card is my preferred option because it saves me time, which is my priority. I suspect those that oppose paying with card (let alone contactless) haven't really used it. I also suspect those who would trial it for 2 months, paying card or using contactless where possible (yeah, yeah, 50p on a card doesn't count if you have a 50p in your pocket), would learn it's actually probably better/easier. I didn't get mobile payments, until I started using them properly. However, it was slightly more inefficient than using my card because of the way I have my phone set up and became a lot more complicated. So I have gone back to good old contactless and card combo.
  8. "Because I don't want to" isn't what I'd call a "reasonable" reason. It leads to the question "why don't you want to?". They could say "because I just don't want to" <-- but what makes you think that, compared with "okay I will". There is obviously something that has nudged the person into the "don't want to partake"... only that is the true reason. That's why older people get stick for being stuck in their ways. Because there appears to be no reasonable reason why you would do something for no gain. I don't give a monkeys whether people use cash or not. I do give a monkeys when they are delaying me faffing about. I'd rather spend time in the garden with a beer than stuck behind someone trying to get rid of all their change. I am rarely stuck behind people paying with a card.
  9. I'd be happy to pay an extra £50 if it means I can spread the payment, yes. But then all those small companies at trade shows (BBC Good Food / Gardeners World), or model railway shows, hell even small charities take card.
  10. I am more than happy to accept others don't like not paying with cash, but will never understand, when there is an easier, more efficient, secure way of doing so, why nobody would want that as their preferred method of payment. I can't think of anyone, or anything that people would prefer the less convenient way for the pure hell of it. So far, I haven't read any reasonable reason why someone would prefer cash for general purchases (say, from the supermarket). The odd posts previous give off a "stuck in my ways" sort of feel when I read them. It's fine being stuck in your ways, but no need to complain when people don't understand why people choose to purposefully do something in an inefficient manner.
  11. I'm still here. However lack of overtime at work means lack of extra spends for model railway. Although that's being looked at as the person who is supposed to cover days off is always available to cover mine, yet seemingly never available for someone else - who then gets all the overtime.
  12. However, today Abellio have signed the contract for the EMR franchise: https://www.abellio.com/news/ps600-million-improvements-east-midlands-railway-abellio-confirmed From East Mids:
  13. Never heard that before. Another good reason for cashless though - no problems with fraud like that.
  14. Yes but I can give a reason that isn't empty. There aren't many things in life I can answer with "I just don't want to". In fact, in my 30 seconds of thinking, I can't think of a single thing that doesn't have a reason behind why I do / don't do something. If you're happy to stick to things that work fine with no improvement, best go back to Windows 95.
  15. Is there a hint of further planned liveries? I can't imagine the one I am hoping for won't make it but would prefer something more than my hope
  16. I do find this stuff (about different pways of paying) interesting though. But it must be a generational type of scenario. I don't see the point in drawing out cash just to spend it. Seems like an extra step with a disproportional risk of loosing said cash / being robbed. When I spend on my card, I know I am spending £100. Just because I'm not handing over cash, doesn't mean I'm not aware how much it is. Especially as I get paid electronically so never see all that money as cash anyway. Yet my wifes father is a bit old school and prefers to pay in cash. He'll even use the supermarket cash point to draw money out, just to give it to the cashier! But then he never gives an explanation why, just saying "I like to pay with cash".
  17. I didn't say "it doesn't happen" - but come on, with the millions od contactless cards out there, skimming must have hit less than 5% of them But I agree, if it's happened to you, it'll bring up walls of protection. Same with RFID wallets. Most wallets these days come with some sort of protection built in. I tried to describe the silly little sleeves you get. But then I guess we're of a different generation. It's not that I am care free, it's just the benefits outweigh the risks for me personally. It's like those people who refuse to use contactless payments saying "I don't trust it". If you are paying for some goods, you are authorising the payment, whether you type your pin in or not is irrelevant. You're still in control of paying during that transaction. To be fair, mobile payments are more secure than anything we've had previously. Most (all "modern" ones?) phones have fingerprint sensors, which if set up easily by the user, require a fingerprint to pay for something. Compared with those people who have their bank pin number written on a piece of paper in their purse, or as a contact on their phone... I mean, it's 4 digits that you can set to whatever you like. I've had mine set to my wifes year of birth for years.
  18. It's not the first thing. The first thing is the annoyance of not being able to pay a builder using a credit card that I can pay off interest free over 12/24/28 months. Although don't tar me with a debt ridden brush I planned to use that credit card I specifically signed up for, only for that payment. But I am a cynic. If "the people" can get away without paying (tax, for a 10p reusable bag, a train ticket), they will.
  19. I wonder if it's the limited appeal electric locos have too? I don't see many layouts with overhead wires or locos. However, the delay has sort of come with a boom in electric locos of that time, what with the 91 and 92 on the way too. I hope they're all a success!
  20. Work force rubbish browser on me. But another "helpful" problem is when visiting on a phone, the site detects I'm using Android and serves me the mobile website. This is great, but no in-site option to change to a "full" version so I can find what I want. I changed a setting in the browser but that isn't really the point. I get I'm in the minority though. Just a shame there aren't options. It's not that difficult to manually code in. Didn't bother to wait for the "location" to be fixed on the left here, so I manipulated mine so it shows nice. Everyone else's doesn't have a space or colon.
  21. It's also worth noting that people like builders are moving to direct bank transfer now. The problem with paying companies in cash (not large companies), is simply not declaring it to the tax man. While we all point at large corporations, there's plenty of "Jimmy down the road" sorts of people doing the same thing.
  22. People said this about contactless payments but you don't see much about people losing money in this way. Because it doesn't really happen. The tiny silly card holder things are a waste of money too!
  23. Unless you're going to share, I find it's best not to say anything at all. The whole "I know something you don't know" never ends well.
  24. Amazon are trialling a shop like this. You go in, it detects your phone (and thus you), cameras detect what you choose, it charges you automatically on the way out. The difference is, I don't think Amazon plan to roll it out full scale. After reading, I got the feeling it was purely an indugence of technology testing. I am all for not accepting cash in certain places though. I barely use cash these days and wish everywhere would accept card. I get concerned when going to food outlets or shops inside preserved railways or at local events as they may not accept card. Car boots is obvious though! With free cash machines reducing and young people seemingly using cash less and less, within 20 years I bet they'll be a lot more places that simply don't accept cash. With the small gadgets you can buy that take contactless payments, there's no excuse not to accept card anywhere.
  25. Out of interest: How did the loco stop? (did it just stop, or did you stop it and it wouldn't go again?) I assume you're on DC (hence you checked the blanking plug)? Did you take the blanking plug out and reseat it?
