  1. Going Spare

    Hornby king

If these parts are the same as on an ex-Dapol style Hornby Castle, it may be worth speaking with Peters Spares as they did at one time have both from demic early Hogwarts Castle chassis.
  2. Service Sheet 436B is now available for downloading from the Hornby site.
  3. Looking at Service Sheet 436 which was accessible on the old Hornby website but not on the new one, there are no screws shown and it appears that Hornby have reverted to the traditional method of chassis lugs at the base of each cab door, plus one at the mid point locating in to recesses on the body.
  4. Looking at the Service Sheets that Hornby have issued for the 9F it appears that it has retained the traditional clip-fit arrangement, with two upward clips along each upper face of the chassis frame locating in to recesses at the bottom of the body side panels. Sometimes, body and chassis can be separated by squeezing at both ends so that the sides bow outwards. If not, gentle leverage with a blade introduced at a corner and worked along the side between chassis and body may be necessary.
  5. The "Coming Soon" section of Hornby's home page states August.
  6. So, if "Unavailable" means Sold Out as far as Hornby's direct sale stock is concerned, what does "Out of Stock" mean, if not the same thing, and if so, why use "Unavailable"?
  7. Four months after its launch, Hornby still have much work to do to put their own website in order before being critical of others.
  8. Agreed, but would not flagging the items as "Pre-order for Summer 2022", or as appropriate, be preferable to "Unavailable" which has a ring of cancelled rather than delayed. Strange that the Midland Pullman power cars and just one coach are delayed, if that is the case, rather than the complete unit.
  9. To the "Unavailable" list (as opposed to "Out of Stock") can be added:- R3761 Peckett W4 R3892 Class 91 111 R3948 APT power car R30071 Cl 153 Scotrail R30077 HST Midland Pullman power cars R40011/2/3 APT coach packs R40170 Midland Pullman FO
  10. In the 8th edition of Ramsay's guide, they are quoted at £15 - £20.
  11. When converting to 5-pole motors, Hornby introduced dual trailing bogie pick-ups. That for the 86 seems hard to come by but Peters Spares still have pack X8786 which was issued for the 90.
  12. That is not a Hornby Castle tender drive unit - it has never been tender-driven. Probably vintage Airfix.
  13. Check out the chassis exploded view on Hornby service sheet 301 but I think you will find once the top mount is removed, there is no ready way of the underframe carrying the bogie frame.
  14. Motor bogies are not interchangeable as the Hornby version is top-hung. Only complete chassis are direct replacements.
  15. According to Pat Hammond's catalogue, the 'Caledonian Single' was issued as R765 in 1983 as a black special edition for Grattans.
  16. My understanding is that A B Gee no longer act as Hornby's "only wholesaler" of railway items and this is borne out by their website, which still offers Airfix, Corgi, Humbrol and Scalextric but there is no mention of railways.
  17. One of the first trio of locos released, R2170 35023 Holland Afrika, had an early crest and no speedo drive, followed by R2204 Bibby, R2267 Brocklebank, R2300 New Zealand and R2599 Lamport & Holt as well as R2171 Canadian Pacific (early crest but with speedo drive) in blue according to Hornby's Service Sheets and Pat Hammond's catalogue.
  18. Could it be the chassis has been modified to do away with the need for the additional bearing? It would certainly not be the first time a running change to a specification has been initiated within the Chinese production process without anyone in the UK being aware, and continuing to use the same part/pack number just to confuse further.
  19. Going Spare

    X9181 ?

2 versions of X8849 are listed by Peters Spares.
  20. Unless Hornby have changed the specification, Service Sheets 403B (Mk1 coach) and 422C (Peckett W4) show the coupling assembly (head, hook and pocket) as being the standard NEM X9289.
  21. I would offer a reply but discussing shortcomings in the website is apparently taboo, unlike sometimes scathing criticism of Hornby's products themselves.
  22. Going Spare

    X9181 ?

An earlier post in this thread stated the X6346 Tornado gears pack was a suitable substitute for X9181 (the Stanier and Fowler tanks share the same chassis) and that pack is in stock at Lendons of Cardiff.
  23. If your loco is from the R2308M train pack rather than the free-standing R2221, it will have a speedometer drive, which will need releasing from the driving wheel as part of the body/chassis separation.
