Modifying and scratchbuilding with 3D prints
LMSfan72 replied to LMSfan72's topic in Modifying & Detailing RTR stock
A couple of mock up shots (I know the camera is on the wrong end!) the equipment above the mini plough The underside equipment: I printed various versions, just the cameras or a full “door”. -

I am going to try Vallejo Game Color Electric Blue 72.023 - I tend to go by eye once I've got it close. It may need to be lightened, we'll see once it's on a primed surface! -

Does anyone know if 153376 still has the single camera on the "other" end? -

Back to the 153 VIU I filled the marker lights with black tack - seems a much easier thing to do than fill and paint 🙂 I bought some dual colour SMD LEDs for the marker/rear. Printed a new light box and light guide for the new led and glued the led to the back of the light guide. i will fit SMD LEDs into the box for the headlights too. Just need to work out if I need to print light guides for those. i plan on putting the resistors in the light box too and then probably run the wires direct to the decoder -

I had 3 of 3mm either blue or purple LEDs in a row in the holes you can see in the well print. I then have some translucent plastic covering them to diffuse it. You should be able to do it with SMD LEDs. I fitted a decoder and operate it off that. -

Here’s the N scale UTU. Unsurprisingly I do t think the door handrails will make it but the rest is fine. Just the underbody to print now -

Fixed! Along with the fibre glass panels just behind the cab. The metallic panels in front of the fans seem to be painted differently to Hornby’s rendition, too. That might give me a chance to tidy them up better…! -

now I'm beginning to think it never had a grey roof section, just a much glossier black at the rear which reflects like it is grey...hmmm -

I have been asked if my UTU prints might work in N gauge. I have no N gauge stock or track so fitting it to a chassis/modding the chassis isn’t something I can do but I would expect a similar approach to others that I e done where I used the ends of a donor chassis with coupling and bogie mounts might work. The design itself seems to work, but having a lot of trial and error on supports and orientation. First attempt of UTU1 62384: -

No 3D prints on this one, but as an interlude and having gotten hold of one of the fictitious jubilee HSTs at a good price, I thought I’d have a go at this one (one of many on here I know!). I used Vallejo and Lifecolor paints (and a Halfords Ford Polar Grey aerosol I had laying about). Overall I’m pleased but I made a bit of a pig masking the metallic roof panels and I will probably have to weather them in. -

Played around with the design and managed to print them with really thin edges. Did the blanks too… Now I’ll be doing 153311 and 153376 both with the inspection units under the body as they are today rather than on the mini ploughs. -
I missed this when first posted. Nice job!!

I started with a cheap generic one which worked ok but didn’t last very well (clumsy cleaning). I upgraded to a Neo for Iwata - when they were significantly cheaper than they are now! I did that because spares were available and that also meant I could buy a second needle and nozzle etc at a different size for different jobs

I finally got around to completing 6263, so here's my prototypical rake: 37610 (as bought), 6263 (full scratchbuilt 3D print), 73631 (standard Hornby atm!), 5971 (custom window grills, CET tanks and door lock lights), 5995 (custom window grills, CET tanks and door lock lights), 37607 (full respray) -

Just a trial fit. Debating whether to remove the window frame and use a slightly bigger fill panel. It’s a toss up between filling and filing! Just brush painted so losing a bit of the detail. I think perhaps a bit of filler might be easier to get a decent finish…… -

This one is ok. I might have a go at a repaint..
