  1. Phew! I was trying to work out how I was going to afford it so glad somebody else has saved me the trouble.
  2. Makes all your work shine - well done
  3. There's a series of articles on coaching stock in more recent journals - they've not been offered digitally to members yet I believe but I will try and work out which ones they are in and then find them.
  4. Interesting that it has two white lamps as well as the required red - I think I am right in saying that in steam days that would have been a no no even if not lit - is it acceptable now?
  5. Very good I know (from the GERS Journal) in the last years of the GER (when coaches were marked GE rather than GER) the crest was only used on carriages with first class accommodation - were crests used for your time period?
  6. That's what I was wondering - with so many combinations and the pressure at present it would be very easy to get the odd one wrong. Which may be doing Chris a huge disservice saying so!
  7. Agreed, although their resilience come a long way in the last few years. Virtual Memory should really be dead by now, RAM is so cheap now it's not really needed.
  8. Incidentally, this is my new toy at work: 15.3TB (1TB = 1024GB) of solid state storage. 5 years ago when we had one server that did everything, it would take over 15 minutes to reboot. The server that takes the longest now takes 20 seconds. I'm just glad it wasn't me paying for it - so far this year I've spent enough company money to buy about 245 Hornby A2/3's It did all come as a pile of parts though, so I did have to build it and it has taken far too much of my time up. Although no soldering iron was used or required! Anyway, as you were, back to more important mechanical things that DO need a soldering iron.
  9. Absolutely correct - the drives with huge amount of storage are still mechanical - spinning disks with read heads, but even they will be replaced in the not so distant future with "solid state". Three main advantages - they are extremely fast to read and write, they are more reliable and they use less power. Going back to mobile phones, I was given my first one by my brother for my 21st birthday. It was big and heavy, and used AA batteries. It took me a while to get used to the idea, but I've had quite a few since. My current one has two SIM cards in it (else I'd have to have two phones, one for work and one personal) - we don't have a landline any more. The huge downside of course is my work phone is always with me and you never know when I am going to get a call. But that's what the silent setting is for I am very pleased to say it's not an apple phone. I have never liked their stuff. For using forums, browsing the internet and so on I still much prefer a PC. A phone has its uses but it doesn't have a decent size screen, nor a keyboard that anyone with normal size fingers can use without looking like you are typing after a few too many shandies.
  10. "I believe the children are our future" - that would make a good line for a song What one person may find boring, another will find fascinating. Museums have to have variety, especially for the education part of their remit - and to get the younger generation interested in carrying on what the current generation are doing takes a lot of thought and effort. My daughter likes riding on trains, she's not hugely interested in how they work, but every now and then something will grab her attention for a little while. The NYMR has a great little exhibition showing how various parts of trains work, and more importantly, you are allowed to touch and try them - The IOWSR has a driving simulator - with all important clothes to put on when doing it to make you feel like you belong. The NRM as others have said have to follow national guidelines. It's nothing new - look at Ellerman Lines - which also really got her attention as she could see how it was put together Additionally, from what I recall this was just sitting on the route through, not part of a "wonderlab" type of thing. She sat down and just got on with it, no encouragement needed. Yet other things aimed at education she walked straight past, not interest whatsoever. Plan the variety of your museum well and you should hopefully be able to engage people from all ages and walks of life.
  11. Agree entirely. I've said it before, ebay auctions are 7 days (or however long the auction is on for) of browsing followed by 5 seconds of putting the bid in and auction stealer (or another service) just does that last few seconds bid for you.
  12. Welcome back Not a bad price at all, especially if that included reinstalling windows and other software.
  13. Hmm, Eileen's used to but they don't list them now. Can you switch to metric? I've used these people a few times https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141476696030?hash=item20f0ab0fde:g:q9kAAMXQWuRQ-I1a
  14. Good grief! You of all people should know Tony is a serious modeller. No way would a "my first telephone" be appropriate!
  15. I missed "liberating" Haddiscoe Jct box from the SM by a week, I got home from uni and went down to Mangapps and was shown the "loot". Would have loved to have helped out with that one! The sleepers that came out were so varnished you could polish them.
  16. I have had a Constructeon class 14 kit for many years, it looks to be really well designed, but very fiddly due to the nature of the loco. It's the only product of theirs that I was aware of until this chassis kit appeared.
  17. SNG is leaving before it is finished - it was part of the agreement as the NRM knew they were planning on replacing the current workshop and with access restrictions due to covid progress understandably fell well behind. I hope (really hope) the new workshop is built to allow this kind of work as seeing SNG mid overhaul was a highlight of my last visit.
  18. Supply and demand can be a nightmare. There's a silcone chip shortage being widely reported. I've been buying solid state computer drives ad-hoc for the last year or so. Last one I bought of the specific model was £155 in June. They are now going for £230+
  19. They have literally re-opened this week after being on Furlough for a while, including for the first time online ordering, so I think it's fair to say there may be a few teething troubles whilst they get the hang of it
  20. There's a familiar name, welcome aboard Theo
  21. No problem - I had been watching some but didn't link them with being the current range owner until it was mentioned above.
  22. I would guess this seller - https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/hatuk73/m.html
