    Welcome to the Long Nights....

  3. Not very impressed with the new Richard Osman; at all.

The co-host needs to be quick-witted and clever to bring the tedious job of reading lists and expanding questions to life. Without that the show has long, dead moments with shots of Xander looking bored - as we saw tonight.

Erm... Sandi Toksvig, Vicky Coren-Mitchell, Sue Perkins, Jon Richardson?

Yes, something about him was different tonight but I couldn't quite put my finger on it... 😉

  6. Some water droplets falling though the air... not sure what it means anymore... however, I do know that the Queen reigns but does not precipitate...

Voluminous nocturnal precipitation here in the heart of Devon.

Pond was 6in down, now brimming again.

They have sent me an email telling me the parcel is at their sortation facility.

It's only a matter of time before parcels are delivered by drones, which depart with a cheery, "Glad to be of service. Share and Enjoy!"

      Or here: https://platinumjubilee.gov.uk/events/

This page has a map of events, which includes beacons.

  14. Why the heck is anyone thinking about a return of imperial measurements for shops?

Anyone else think this is a recipe for profiteering on customers by mixing styles on price per.

    1. Harlequin

      Harlequin

I was at school 40+ years ago and we were never taught the intricacies Imperial measurements. I literally have no idea how many ounces in a pound or pounds in a stone. (I measure my railways in millimetres but I can't help using feet and inches when talking to others.)

I assume most people after my generation were also educated in the metric system so who is this idea aimed at? I guess it would appeal to a certain section of the electorate...

  15. I think I have just received the Schrodinger's Cat of Railway Modelling.  Second hand loco from Hattons, described as tested and working yet it just arrived fully sealed in the original manufacturer's cellophane from twenty years ago...

So it is both working and non-working until you open the cellophane? Neat!

  16. Wondering about the incidence of grassy knolls in Moscow. Asking for a friend.

    1. Harlequin

      Harlequin

Sadly, I don't think Mr. P. goes in for open-top "motorcades" near grassy knolls, nor book depositories.

A Shakespearean end seems more likely at the moment. "Et tu Brute?".

Or Kenneth Williams, "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!" (Ah, le mot juste!)

Or Bluebottle, "Did you know that Polonius was stabbed through the arras?"

  17. Hi I recently came across this thread regarding GWR letters and I understand that you have the computer font for these letters. Would you be able to share the font with me, my club is building. GWR layout and I have been tasked with making the signs. In return I could 3D print some for you if you need anymore. Thanks.

The original "GWR Signs" font is held by the "GWR-Elist-2019" group on groups.io. You can download it from there if you join.

It's a bit old and some of the characters aren't wholly convincing, though. As they stand they all need to be emboldened for use on running in boards but the font has no bold variant - you'd have to stroke the outlines, which is not typographically the same thing.

  18. I must admit I'm always nervous when I send a PM in case it ends up here...

    I've been lucky so far!!!

  19. On Pointless, nobody ever says, "I'd like to see questions about railways come up".

And when asked what they would do with the prize money, no-one ever says, "Well Xander, I'd buy a huge shed and build the model railway of my dreams".

    That's what I would say!

    1. Harlequin

      Harlequin

Now that would be a great question: "We gave 100 people 100 seconds to name as many... British pre-grouping railway companies as they could."

I'm going to say, "Hammersmith and City Railway".

The contestants invariably want to see questions about "spawt" (usually football), films or music. And they most often want to spend the prize money on a holiday - i.e. increasing their carbon footprint.

I find the lack of imagination a bit sad...
