  1. NGS Journal issue 2/14 is now at the printers and should be sent out to members as usual to arrive around 15th April. G.
  2. I'm sure that for some people they will be acceptable but not for me. In operation the ones I've seen seem to catch to light (due to it being reflected by the many flat surfaces of the coupler shape and prismatic distortion of the triangular parts) and can shine/wink like a jewel or flashing light which draws attention to them. Personally I think a matt black finish would be better than the shiny/gloss black finish that most are currently supplied in. G.
  3. I've updated some content on the NGS web-site (although there is still much to do) and have posted some info about Journal 2/14 and article submissions here: http://www.ngaugesociety.com/index.php?mact=News,cntnt01,detail,0&cntnt01articleid=237&cntnt01origid=171&cntnt01returnid=171 HTH, G.
  4. There was a short article about fiNetraX and featuring a point kit in N'spiratons12. And I have been promised an article for the Journal about building a point. It all rather depends when this is completed, but finetraX certainly won't get forgotten about or missed in the Journal. Any news or information about new product developments is welcome. G.
  5. I've been following this thread since the beginning and pleased to have caught up with the last couple of days updates. It's great looking stuff. High class modelling and a layout that looks well planned and actually demonstrating one of the major benefits of N gauge : a realistic railway in the landscape. G.
  6. As previously mentioned Journal 1/14 is imminent. Details of the send-out can be found here: http://www.ngaugesociety.com/index.php?page=journal-dates Although 1/14 is the last issue of my predecessor I'm happy to receive feedback and comment through this thread. G.
  7. Issue 1/14, which will be Richard last one, is currently in production/printing and is scheduled for publication around the 15th of this month (February). I've already started work on my first issue which will be 2/14. However, although I have a number of ideas that I'd like to develop and introduce, that issue will be very much as previous ones due to flow-over content already started, the hand over process and current procedures already in place and working. Changes will be introduced gradually but I hope that NGS members will enjoy their new look and new approach journal. G.
  8. It was probably buried away in the thread about N’spirations, but I have accepted the offer of being the new N Gauge Society Journal Editor following the recent resignation of Richard. This will be with effect from issue 2/14. Issue 1/14 is currently in production, is due out in a couple of weeks and will be Richards last. Obviously I have some ideas in mind and plans for the future to try and improve the Journal. However, the purpose of this message is to appeal for NGS members to let me know of any changes that they would like to see (with the Journal) and to ask that they continue writing and producing articles and features – but to now send them to me. There is no restriction on the type of article so long as it is of interest and benefit to NGS members. I appreciate that the Journal is a restricted circulation magazine and only distributed to members of the N Gauge Society but there are over 6000 members and many are also regular readers of RMweb. Plus of course I would be more than happy to receive suitable and appropriate articles (i.e. of benefit and interest to members) from non-members, and I’ll try and arrange for a printed copy to be sent to them if published - it might even encourage them to join. Regards, GRAHAME.
  9. Any idea of when it is likely to turn up? I'm also waiting for a b/g buffet for an HST set and have also got the stage where it matters little about numbering and roof vent cock-ups as I can probably relatively easy sort them out. I've almost got fed up of waiting and it'll just be nice to actually get something to complete the rake rather than wait longer for further corrections. G.
  10. This - http://www.oxforddiecast.co.uk/eras/1_148_0__Current.htm - shows the outstanding N gauge vehicles although there is no quarter indication of when they are due. HTH. G.
  11. It's just a list of vehicles but all appear to be scheduled for Q3 - nothing for Q1, Q2 or Q4. Is that right? G.
  12. Super work on that viaduct. Well done. It'll be great to see it finished and in place. G.
  13. Electrifying stuff - a highly impressive and inspirational thread. Well done. G.
  14. It's all looking rather good. Is there an update on the hooded version? G.
  15. I would imagine that they'd be easily identifiable by the black eye. G.
  16. The train set I remember well is the one on one of the upper floors of Hamleys in Regent street that went around the stair well. It must have been around the late 60s/early 70s. G.
  17. I suppose it's time to make a comment . . . if I wasn't so lost for words. Awesome project, awesome modelling, just awesome. G.
  18. You're right. It's comments like that which are boring. G.
  19. Yep, I do agree. In fact to me the 'MI' indicator tells me very little and really only serves as a rather insidious warning that this layout has no steam trains whereas those without the 'MI' tag are still likely to include a diesel or electric train or two as they were around before steam effectively ended. Consequently I see it as a divisive term and certainly not helpful or meaningful G.
  20. Yes, I did publish comment about it from a member, but as you are probably aware and as is stated in UPDate "any views expressed are not necessarily those of DEMU or the editor". I certainly didn't invite "discussion on how to rid the railway modelling scene of the phrase" but asked for comments and responses with the specific option of 'yes and no' to allow expression of all opinions. Having reasonable discussion about things is perfectly healthy and normal, and I perfectly understand that there are at least two sides to every discussion point - I don't think it implies that there is anything untoward or any nonsense from DEMU. After all, as Steve1 confirmed, there is no official DEMU policy on the matter. I'm sorry that you feel ashamed - I'm sure that wasn't the OP intensions in starting the thread and it certainly wasn't mine in UPDate. GRAHAME DEMU UPDate editor.
  21. I'm enjoying this thread - keep up the good work. Whose are the canopies? G.
  22. Two 'wrongs' don't make a 'right', and I don't recall it being announced as official DEMU policy - the thread was started by an individual posing a discussion point. Not really sure what DEMU has to do with it - surely the term has interest to all modellers and wider implications. G.
  23. Not really IMO - I guess it depends on how, and the intended, use. 'Sometimes' - as I mentioned in my post - 'modern image' comes across as sneery and derogatory (at least to me) and consequently I find it a little offensive and unnecessary. And the use of 'kettle' could be considered to be endearing rather than derogatory, and/or not intended as such. However, I agree that it is also not a very descriptive term. G.
  24. A few things occur to me; If the 'steam era' can be named after the motive power type why not the 'diesel and electric era' - it's only common courtesy? The particular period within it can be named as such, as suggested by many. Sometimes I find 'modern image' (like 'rivet counter' and probably 'kettle' to steam enthusiasts) a little irritating as if it's condescending, confrontational and disrespectful. It's unnecessary to be so inconsiderate and to continue with its use. Surely modern means of 'now or current' and image means 'in its likeness' - historic dated diesel or electric models aren't meant to look modern so why call them that? G.
  25. I don't have much current and certainly nothing up to the standard of those pictured in this thread but here my rather old and dated N gauge contribution; The basic inspiration (apologies for the poor pic - it was taken from a passing train): Under construction: Nearly finished with details like window dressings and drain pipes to add: G.
