  1. Newsletter continued... We've launched a new service for couples looking to bring something different to their wedding day with a 3D scanned and 3D printed cake topper! And to bring them to life we've partnered up with talented figure painter Dan Evason. Last month we attending our first wedding show, aptly at STEAM museum in Swindon where we received a lot of interest and enquiries. The popularity of our OO9 crews has been enormous, so we jumped at the chance to produce bespoke crews for the new Bachmann OO9 Quarry Hunslet's. This was made possible by the kind help of our new stockist Sawyer Models and Derails of Coleford. We've 3 new crew packs, 2 designed for the closed cab version and 1 for the deminuative open cab model. Available via our website now and shortly via our stockists! Thanks to Tobi Johnson for the painted examples - you can see these in store at Sawyer Models. The Hatton's Andrew Barclay was our first collaboration with a manufacturer to produce bespoke crews. Captured at the KESR with the help of Andy Hardy, these figures have been part of our range for some years as individual products. These are now available at a discounted rate as part of a crew pack saving you 20% off the individual figure price. SPRING EXHIBITION SCHEDULE We kick off 2023's exhibition schedule with a return to Alexandra Palace in March for the London Festival of Railway Modelling, then in April we have a new attendance at the Bristol Model Railway Exhibition in Thornbuy. Come along and say hello, get yourself scanned and take a closer look at some of our new products!
  2. Good morning everyone, it appears that I missed a few updates on here, so I will do this months and then a roundup of new releases that may have been missed. Apologies :) Welcome to our first newsletter from our new larger studio in Bristol Barton Hill! A stones throw from Bristol Barrow Road as was, our new space is located in an old Primary School and has a much more light and spacious feel than our previous office. Our new address is Modelu, Unit 9, The Old School House, Salisbury Street, Bristol, BS5 9UD We are also happy to announce that our new premises has a dedicated space for 3D body scanning and a new venture for us - a YouTube studio for creating content such as product launches, painting techniques, product guides and more! Look out for our first videos later this month. Sadly many of our international customers have been hit by double issues with Royal Mail Tracked International. Firstly in early December during the mail strikes it appears Royal Mail lost at least one whole bag of our international shipments, none of which were registered on the Royal Mail Tracking system. We've been doing our absolute best to identify and replace these missing orders, only then to be scuppered by the recent hack to Royal Mails International IT systems. We've just received notice that Royal Mail International is operational again, though some tracking information may be unavailable. Given our experiences with lost packages and no tracking information and the likely enormous backlog of international tracked packages backed up in the system, we are unwilling to jump straight back in and start posting via Royal Mail International. We are looking at alternative solutions whilst the backlog clears and some system stability returns to Royal Mail. If you would like an update on your order or to discuss alternative methods of delivery, please get in touch with us. We are very excited to announce that we will be on the new season of 'Hornby: A Model World'. We were filmed back in June last year 3D scanning on site at Margate and editing and printing figures back at our studio in Bristol. The episode we featuring airs on Monday 6th February! We are sure you wont want to miss it! We are pleased to welcome two new stockists to the Modelu family - Sawyer Models in Leigh and Model Junction in Bury St Edmunds. Both shops will be stocking a range of our most popular OO scale crews and bundles giving customers in the area a great opportunity to see our products in the flesh. We are also extremely grateful to Andy Sawyer for his assistance in the design of our new Bachmann Quarry Hunslet crews Many customers have been asking whether we'd provide STL files for them to print at home themselves, the short answer is yes we will! We are currently planning content for a new Modelu Patreon, whereby modellers with their own 3D printers can subscribe to different membership levels and receive monthly downloads. With such huge scope for such a service we'd like to get an idea of what people would be interested in printing, so later this month we'll be sending a survey to our mailing list subscribers. Your feedback will be invaluable in shaping our patreon we so can ensure subscribers are getting the best value for their money!
  3. Good morning, Apologies that you had some problems with our lamps. We have recently changed our resin and this should no longer happen. Kind regards, Chris
  4. All of our figures are available in N, if for any reason some are showing as not available just pop me a message and I can sort it out for you. Kind regards, Chris
  5. Thank you for sharing this with us. I hope your driver was happy with the Villa score on the weekend!
  6. Scans were done last week and we are very happy with the results. We will share hem before long. We are always open to suggestions, so feel free to contact us if there is anyone you would like to see and we can check how viable it is.
  7. Next month we'll have a bumper new release of figures suitable for Narrow Gauge and Industrial layouts. These will include gravity train figures, slate workers, and loco crew for narrow gauge locos such as the Small England and L&B Manning Wardle, along with standard gauge locos such as the Class 14 Teddy Bear and 0-6-0 Sentinel. Keep your eyes peeled on our social media for progress updates!
  8. Thanks to the curators of STEAM museum, we were able to 3D scan the superb mannequin of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This iconic pose is now part of our range and is available in all scales from N up to 1:12th - as shown here expertly painted by Dan Evason of Tunnel Lane Model Railways. We've expanded our new range of North American figures to include poses suitable for the 1970s and 1980s, before hi-vis became standard. These poses include conductors, brakemen, engineers, and other crew poses, dressed in tshirts and polo shirts. We've also featured some actions such as 'hooping up train orders', with an operator with train order hoop, or conductors reviewing the train order sheet. Thanks to Gerry Schaefer for feedback and suggestions on how we could improve the range. Neil offers a loco and rolling stock weathering service in 7mm scale as well as bespoke scenery making across all scales from desk top dioramas up to the scenic aspects of a whole layout. You can see more of his work on his website http://www.neilpodberyfineart.co.uk Congratulations to Tom Foster who has won our September Modeller of the Month with this incredible photo-realistic shot from his Mid Sodor themed OO9 layout. Tom's work goes far beyond railway modelling into the realms visual story telling, with scenes such as this adding such depth to the world he is creating. Amazing work Tom, can't wait to see how the layout progresses.
  9. I have a new newsletter to share with you From Alan, please see below: Welcome to the slightly delayed Modelu newsletter! After our wedding in September we jetted off to Greece our honeymoon and a week of sun, and now we are back and ready to get stuck back in. This month sees our second release of North American figures, featuring poses suitable for the 1970s/80s, prior to hi-vis becoming the norm. Thanks to Ben Jones at Heljan, we also have two brand new crew packs for their stunning new Class 45. We've lots of other projects in the pipeline coming to fruition in November, so keep your eyes peeled for new announcements via our social media. Our next exhibition is in just over a months time! Come along to Warley at the NEC and see us on stand B108. We'll be sharing our stand with the talented Dan Evason of Tunnel Lane Model Railways, who will be offering tips and advice as well as figure painting demonstrations. Nick Willcox will joining us from the Severn Valley Railway and manning the costume wardrobe. So if you've always wanted to appear on your own layout, come along to the stand and get yourself scanned! At Modelu we continue to strive to bring you the best quality products possible, either by improving our 3D scanning and editing techiques, upgrading our 3D printers or selecting new resins. We are very pleased to announce that all new products from N gauge to O gauge will now be produced in our brand new 8K resin. This matt grey resin offers exceptional levels of detail compared to our previous resins, with improved surface finish, easier support removal, and sharper definition to make the figures easier to paint. These improvements and innovations come at a cost, be it in development or hardware. As a sign of our gratitude for your custom, we are committing to freeze our prices until the new 2023 financial year. We've added a new category to the website to make it easier to find our growing selection of bespoke crews designed in collaboration with locomotive manufacturers. We'll be adding to this new section monthly as we continue to expand our range of bespoke crews. With the recent launch of Heljan's brand new OO gauge Class 45, we're very grateful to have received an EP to allow us to design bespoke crews. With that open window we couldn't resist modelling the driver leaning out with his elbow on the window. Two versions are now available, featuring driver and second man for British Railways era 5 and BR Corporate eras 6/7. The second men are depicted reading a news paper and having a nap! It is also worth noting that as these crews are completely legless, they will likely fit a wide range of other diesels and electrics. Following on from our highly popular Deltic crew packs produced exclusively for Accurascale, our third full-colour 3D printed release will soon be available. These feature three of the Accurascale Research Team, posed on site measuring up and recording details of their next product. Look out for details on the Accurascale website for availability! We are excited to announce a new collaboration with 'Craftsman Kit' manufacturer Keep it Rusty. Craftsman Kits are highly detailed short-run diorama kits, featuring multi-media components utilising laser cutting, 3d printing, cast detail parts and archectural plastic components. We've been tasked to produce bespoke figures for their forthcoming Oddmunns Feed mill. These new figures depict mill workers moving and loading sacks, repairing, or taking a break. Look out for these figures an more being added to the Modelu range later this year.
  10. With thanks to Heljan for letting us borrow an EP of their class 45 we have been able to make a custom crew for it. These will be available on our website soon.
  11. MODELLER OF THE MONTH DARREN SHERWOOD-JONES Modeller of the Month also returns, and as usual it has been a hard choice to pick a winner from all the superb images that are shared with us. Darren wins a £25 Modelu Gift Voucher for sharing this superb shot of his 1/32nd trawler featuring one of our new fishermen figures. Darren's modelling interests are wide and varied, including model ships, armour, aviation, US N Gauge, and UK O Gauge. To enter for next months Modeller of the Month, just share a photo of your work with a Modelu product online, or email us a photo. Good luck! NEXT MONTH We've much more to come in October, with September realistically being our last oppourtunity to develop new products before the busy period sets in. We'll be working on our new Winter 2022/23 Catalogue, our second release of US figures, and a few other specials thanks to spending a morning at STEAM museum!
  12. September is finally here and it will be a big month for Steph, Margot and myself (Alan). We've just moved back into our house after 3 months of renovations, just in time to put the finishing touches on plans for our wedding on September 17th. Work is continuing with Rapido for their new Titfield Thunderbolt figure packs, we now have the head sculpts and have made a start blending them into the body scans. The next step will be to add textures and test the colour prints. Stay tuned on Rapido's website for updates! With the house renovations and our wedding to plan, it is with regret that we must announce that we won't be attending Guildex this year at the Stafford Showground. We'll be back next year, and our next show this year will be at Warley. We've gained a lot of new customers from all over the world recently, many of whom won't know the background to how we make our figurines. This info-graphic shows the steps we take from posing a real person, to the figure being printed out in the customers chosen scale. You might have seen Dan's fantastic painting skills in his monthly Hornby magazine features. Dan Evason offers a professional figure painting service for all scales of Modelu figures, including custom scans. If you’d like your order of Modelu figures painting by Dan, use our contact form to obtain a quote and lead time. You can see more of Dan's work on his Facebook group, or in this months issue of Hornby Magazine. Our brand new range of North American figures is finally here! Our first release features 30 new poses suitable for the Transitional and Modern eras, including engineers, conductors, brakemen, and more. This is just the start for us, so look out for more figures in the coming months! We've also added new scales for the American market, including 1:160, 1:29, 1:55, 1:50, and more. See the website for details. Thanks go out to Larry Puckett (US), Lance Mindheim (US), James Hilton (UK), and Michael Culham (CA), for their invaluable assistance with reference photos, feedback, and sample models. See below for some of their work. Thanks also to members of the Bristol area P4 Group who posed for the scans. MODELU RECOMMENDS... JAMES HILTON'S CUSTOM MODEL RAILWAYS Our monthly feature on Modelu customers who work within the hobby has returned - and this month we shine our spotlight on James Hilton's Custom Model Railways. James offers locomotive kit and scratch building services, along with weathering and bespoke layout creation. He also recently had a book published on Wild Swan Press titled 'Small Layout Design' - for those with limited space it is an excellent resource and packed with ideas. Available on the website in all scales here.
  17. Good evening all! Its the end of the month so we have another newsletter to share with you all and we are really excited! What a month! On the hottest day of the year so far we were in the depths of Bristol Costume Services, clothed in arran sweaters and oilskins, capturing scans for our brand new range of fishermen. Thankfully a fan working overtime stopped the guys from passing out! Access to these costumes has revolutionised the way we work, and the speed in which we are able to get new projects and customer requests into the range. Our first visit has produced over 50 new figures, including long awaited Postmen (1950/60s and present day), Milkmen, Fishermen, and Anglers. We've much more in store, the only real challenge being deciding where to start! US themed figures are high on our list, as are mechanics and BR Blue diesel era depot staff. We are very pleased to annouce that we'll be working with Rapido UK to develop figures for their forthcoming Titfield Thunderbolt Deluxe Packs. Using a combination of 3D scanning and 3D sculpting, we'll be working on creating exact replicas of The Vicar, Bishop, and Squire. These figures will be produced using full-colour 3D printing and will be available exclusively from Rapido. For more information on the progress of the project, please follow our social media pages. August 13/14th sees us return to Railwells for the first time in 2 years! We'll have stocks of all our latest products, along with our scanning equipment and a small selection of clothing and props. If you'd like to get scanned, drop us a mail. For a full list of layouts and traders, see the Railwells website here. http://railwells.com/ Our brand new range of fishermen and crew is now available, starting with crew in oilskins and sweaters. Suitable for a wide range of scenes from docksides to decks, the range includes crew at rest, seated, at work, and fishermen performing various roles such as gutting and carrying fish baskets. This range is just the beginning, and in time we'll be adding other poses such as repairing nets and equipment, mopping, etc. We've also added new scales for the model ship and boat modellers amoungst you, including 1:10th, 1:15th, 1:33rd and 1:30th, 1:50th, 1:128th and more! Available as individual figures or bundles at 20% off list price. With rail strikes in the news, this is the perfect set to deploy if technical problems stop your trains from working! Four figures are holding placards while one regales us using a megaphone. While the recent disputes inspired this set, the figures could be just as easily used on a 1970s layout. They don't need to be strikers either, pretty much any sort of protest can be modelled. Available as a bundle of 5 figures (please note, plackard decals are not included)
  18. Th first release is going to be oils, the second release is going to be woollen.
  19. Good morning everyone, I have attached a picture of one of many fishermen that are due to join the range soon. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed scanning them!
  20. That boat looks lovely, if only there were a company soon to release some crew that would fit in well.
  21. Thank you for the message Simon, we are always open to suggestions. I will pass your suggestions onto the boss Monday. Thanks again, Chris
  22. So today is the first of the month making it time for another newsletter! Welcome to our July newsletter! Things are a little hectic at present, with Steph, Margot and Myself (Alan) sofa surfing friends houses whilst our new house in Bristol is renovated. It's a testing time but will be so worth it when it is completed, hopefully before we get married in September! At Modelu HQ we've welcomed Ed Greenlees to the team - Ed is a final year Product Design intern from UWE and has joined us on an 8 week internship. Harrison, who joined us full-time after completing his UWE internship last year, is mentoring Ed and setting his work programme. Ed's projects are varied, from researching and designing a new Photogrammetry rig for super high definition 3D scanning, to creating a new bespoke figure pack for the Dapol Class 122. Ed's Photogrammetry project has been made possible thanks to Modelu being awarded a 33% Cash Back Grant from the North and East Bristol Enterprise Support programme (NEBES). We are really excited to be working with NEBES and Bristol Council to widen the services Modelu offer. Since Chris joined us at the end of May, we've had much more time to manage our social media and Modelu Modellers group. Chris has also blown the dust off of our Twitter account. If you are a Twitter user, give us a follow! Our latest product release is a new bespoke figure pack for the Dapol Class 121/122 Diesel Railcar. Available in OO and O gauge as well as other scales, the pack features a driver and 5 passengers pre-cut to drop fit into the seating. Two versions are available, covering the 1960s/70 period and 1980s/90s. Thanks to Steven Woodman-Dix for the loan of his Class 121/122 unit. After a few months of trawling eBay and Facebook marketplace, we have a growing collection BR Corporate era clothing. Look out for a whole new range of poses next month, inspired by the Crewe Railway Works Inside Story documentary, including depot staff, fitters, and more.
  23. Good afternoon everyone. I would like to introduce myself, my name is Chris and in the last month I have joined the team at Modelu. I have had an interest in trains from a young age and model in OO gauge myself. We are really pushing on with new products at the moment. I don't want to spam RMweb with just our products, so please keep an eye out for our social media pages (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). I will be coming onto here often so please feel free to ask any questions. I look forward to seeing Modelu products featuring on your layouts. Chris
