  1. Something for machining fans this evening, I have to confess I'm not sure what sort of turning you would do on a 'Turret lathe'. I'm not sure what all those blanks are in the foreground either. The operator is certainly concentrating hard on the task, and is flat out for 'Maximum Production' - doing that for a 8 hour shift would be enough to give you 'Turret's Syndrome'!!!!! Ahem, as they say....I'll get my coat 😁
  2. You know how I've always said some of these adverts are a bit dull...🙂
  3. Yes definitely - its the 'feel' of the artwork, although straying into 'DC Comics' territory, if you replace the railcar with the flying figure of superman, or even Flash Gordon's Rocket ship Ajax you would have a classic old movie poster in essence. By the way did that company ever make steam heating boilers for diesels?
  4. Nice link! I hadn't seen that pattern of signalling before. Our gentle mocking of the stylised artwork is purely light hearted - I for one am definitely not a rivet counter! In some ways the slightly naive depictions are quite refreshing compared to some of todays ultra slick computer generated images!
  5. Crikey! I had missed the 2ft 6 gauge track !!!! And come to think of it the semaphores above the lattice escaped me too, this bit of advertising artwork is the gift that keeps on giving! If you look carefully at the signal base, the artist appears to have lost track of perspective too. I am slightly disappointed to have to agree that this one doesn't feature the stylised prototype Deltic after all though! P.s - think you're right about the power signal box, the artist giving a nod to modernity, having resisted the urge to include the stylised....you know what.
  6. A little something for everyone this evening! A nice primary cell for all the battery enthusiasts out there! Strange foreign looking signalling A very odd version of a Stylised prototype Deltic - perhaps the worst one so far, perhaps it's a rendition of a non UK loco?
  7. Fantastic - I recognised it immediately as Monks Hall, my Dad worked at the steelworks and I had a ride on that very shunting engine once!!!! Interesting to see the 122 - 'passenger stock' was pretty rare on the 'low level' line. Normally at the time of this photo it was 47/3's & 56's before they gave way to the 20's on MGR services. I was always amazed how any useable steel products emerged from the rather ramshackle nature of the works which for a long time was one of the areas major employers. The internal rail system was fantastically grotty, but seemed to go everywhere on the site including a set of rails that seemed to point directly into the River Mersey (or so it seemed to me!!!) - no buffer stop! A lot of the workers there made use of the facilities in the engine shed to fix their cars on a Saturday morning! As we often say this was a different age, health and safety was your own responsibility and if you took chances and something went wrong - well that was that!! Beer drinking was common place during a shift and the apprentice was often sent out to get a round in. For a snap shot of what it was like see the youtube link below - be warned though, a lot is shot in real time, and you will be exposed to some 'characters' and local legends!!!! there is of course some playing to the camera! The lads were all a good laugh, but believe me, you didn't mess them around!!
  8. Another dull one for you all tonight! 🙁 Possibly even rivaling the now famous 'timber treatments' one from a few pages back!
  9. This ad is quite unbelievable - even from a time before political correctness!!!!
  10. Looks more class 20 than Cyberman - an improvement but looks less 'modern'. Were these electrics co-co because of the weight of the electrical equipment?
  11. Here's my offering for tonight! On first glance it looks like an advert for a dual 'tanker' wagon ordered by Nigerian Railways. It turns out that it is actually an advert for the bearings that the axles of said wagon run in 😀 The wagon is certainly a novel idea - I've not seen anything similar, has anyone else?
  12. The driver certainly looks happy! Never imagined a Ruston 48DL on a 'block working' 😆
  13. Excellent! - keep 'em coming, though still bonus points available for a 'stylised deltic' in any more recent ones!!! Love the electrical puns, and I can almost hear the crackle / smell the ozone from that depiction! Cheers Alex
  14. I'm no expert on Deltic variations but what are the two black dots either side of the top of 'nose' of D9007 Pinza in J1116, are they horn grills like on a class 40?
  15. Good evening all, there almost seems a note of desperation in this advert for 'Alfloc' water treatment! Maybe they though their market would disappear completely as steam engines were replaced by diesels? Then someone hit on an idea - 'wait a minute diesels have water based cooling systems - we're not doomed after all!'😃 This advert was ripe for a cameo appearance of the 'artists impression of a prototype Deltic' I'm amazed it doesn't feature!
  16. Great stuff, I'm always amazed at what they have managed to preserve - must pay a visit one day soon!
  17. Definitely! I wonder why they didn't use a nice picture of a 124? They could even have popped in a styalised version of the prototype 'Deltic' (why not everyone else seems to have done!!!) next to some of their other products. I wonder if this ad comes second after the timber treatment one, in the least inspiring stakes? Also - I hope the top illustration wasn't a prototype for some of their other 'leading ends'!!!!!! Though possibly an improvement on a 73 😀
  18. Some more 'reinforced plastic' products for this evening - do I take it from this advert that the 'leading ends' of transpennine units referred to, mean that the Class 124 DMU's had Glass fibre reinforced cabs?
  19. Pandrol Clips tonight! The address sounds familiar, I'm sure we've had 'Mincing Lane' before!
  20. Hello everyone - an auto shunter with a 1 ton crane attached - looking very much like a tractor, with a 1 ton crane crafted on!
  21. Hello everybody - time for another advert! This is another one that could have gone in the 'real thing looks like a model thread' too. That bogie side frame looks like it has come straight from a kit!
