  1. At the current exchange rate these undercut the prices (in GBP) on the Hornby web site. For example Mallard at 165.56 Euros is £142 whereas ordering from Hornby (excluding points / club discount) is £163.99,
  2. Bure Valley seems to have a special relationship with Hornby. In the days of dumping discounting of stock by the Hornby Group they were always a good place to go to for cheap Hornby or Airifx. Their stock holding of Hornby items is well in excess of most LMS's I visit and I guess they have a number of customers who but from them as a way of supporting the BVR. It certainty did not come as a surprise to me. They are only just off my regular route to North Norfolk so hopefully when I call in over the next week or so they will have some in stock as I am yet to see TT:120 in the flesh.
  3. I was in our gift shop of the railway I volunteer at this morning and spotted this https://gibsonsgames.co.uk/products/off-to-the-coast When I showed it to the shop manager her reaction was that she wouldn't have stocked it if she had looked at the details. Two gauges in the platform. Very narrow platform with the passenger sitting on the bench having his feet at the platform edge and the steam loco running on rails at platform level.
  4. @BluenGreyAnorak Thanks for taking the time to take and post that. It will be invaluable in both planning my build and carrying it out.
  5. Is that ABC models in view in that shot? As per I don't know when they closed down but I was a regular visitor in the early 1970's but mainly when they were turfed out of the London Bridge shop to a new location over then river for a few years. This was because the parade of shops under the viaduct were used as project offices for the rebuilding of London Bridge (that is the structure over the river not the station).
  6. Now that my order from @jonhall has arrived (it was posted the day after my order but I have a feeling Roya Mail doesn't deliver to our address on a Saturday!) I need to set about this project learning from @BluenGreyAnorak 's posts from earler in this year in I think I know what is needed but if @BluenGreyAnorak picks up this thread - have you completed the rigging and what is required?
  7. They were once but now I think all the kits have been replaced with the more recent offerings. Actually due to higher quality of the new ones some are harder to build than the old ones. The Folland Gnat being one example.
  8. Self fulfilling statement there as Facebook modelling pages are populated by modellers. There have been a few people joining forums I belong to who have returned to the hobby as a result of picking up a kit this way. It's a valid marketing tool as is the Airfix schools offering and the paint and build sessions,
  9. As has been already said some are. I travelled on a steam trip with WCR stock back in march this year and that set had them. No more don't use the toilet in the station moments.
  10. Thought it was odd when I received emails from Oxford about the availability of N7's. Some were obviously shop/warranty returns. Also there have been items on eBay obviously from Oxford.
  11. Scalescenes do a variety of bridges which can be adjusted to your required width. https://scalescenes.com/railscenes @nickwood typed his answer at the same time.
  12. Having now read the comments on this thread I am glad it didn't. It's now on my round tuit shelf.
  13. This thread has been running for some time now: So what about this I was recently asked to dispose of a number of trains on behalf of some friends whose son had grown out of trains. All the items sold on e-bay for more than I expected apart from this, which was unsold So I set myself a challenge, could this be transformed into something that would not look out of place on my 1940's era layout? 1) Leave as a crane wagon. 2) Take the crane off, use it elsewhere and use the wagon. Thoughts please - no answers just saying throw it away as that is the default position anyway, For those who don't know the model the wagon is a die casting so even removing the jib holders will require more than a Dremel or small hack saw.
  14. Another other from me. Learnt from experience. I have a number of items purchased for the reason in the question but have sat on the shelf and are rarely, if ever, run. There's lots out there of interest to me in both n and OO but in all cases they would not fit into my current layout and despite my username I cannot use rule 1 to justify the expense.
  15. Depends on where you are coming from, the Traveline website has been mentioned already and I have used the 44 bus a number of times. It's certainly a good service from Norwich.
  16. I have steered clear of ebay for selling for a number of years, but I was recently asked to dispose of a number of OO models used as "toys" mainly Hornby era Thomas items. These all went with no silly issues and for good prices. However within the items for sale there were a number of modern image items. Within a few hours of the listings for the modern image items going live I received a number of very low offers of well under the starting price which I had set 10% lower than the lowest price on ebay for such items. I all cases I checked the potential purchasers and they were all active sellers. In one case the individual had sold the item they made an offer in last week for 3 times the offer (s)he was making me. I did point this out when I declined the offer.
  17. At least with your chosen period you avoid having to build the Shard but No 1 London Bridge was built during the period and would make an interesting project. As others have said if your earlier models are anything to go by this will be an interesting project to follow. Last thought you could always model the NSE open day in 1988 https://www.kentrail.org.uk/London Bridge 1988.htm.
  18. Not always true when my mother could no longer cope at home we found a home locally that was run by a not for profit organisation and I could not fault the care she got. She died before COVID but I understand that the number of deaths in that home due to COVID were lower than others. As to the OP's question she was self funding so it did hit my brother and my longer term retirement income but we were happy about this. We are now waiting on the government to acknowledge her widow's pension underpayment.
  19. Only just found this topic. Interesting that it has actually been mainly o/t since about the fifth post. AI is dependant on its learning process / algorithms and feedback from users. Where the money is put into that learning process the results are outstanding medical research being one such area. Good ustomer relations do work but to be good they need to go through the entire feedback cycle. Give and answer, was the customer happy with the answer and did it solve thier issue. If so use that answer to similar queries other mark it appropriately. After a certain number of iterations it will get if right. I doubt if many resources have invested in the orignal question in this thread. A good AI system will have read this thread and taken out what it sees as successul ideas and incorporate then into a revised reply. As a number of "box shifters" and other model railway supplies now seem to have live chat boxes, which I guess are AI driven perhaps people could give good and bad experiences. Last thought when @Phil Parker and @AY Mod go on holiday could they be replaced by AI to see what happens?
  20. I am by no means an expert and just readcas many sources that can be trusted as possible and the collate the information. As far as I can infer the temperature itself is not the issue it's how it advances or inhibits other threats to the paper/card as you mention one of these is humidity. Others include chemical changes and insect activity. As to the longevity of books although seemingly OK many books will have minor damage such as foxing, weakened binding glue, rusting staples etc.
  21. I have just written a procedure regarding archives preservation for a museum I am involved with I am surprised that any card models survive, and the procedure does not include such items as cats sitting on buildings. The worst issues are light, humidity and temperature. With recommended humidity being 45% - 55% and temperature between 16 and 21 degrees C. After writing that I am buying a temperature and humidity monitor for my new model room. Basic models are fairly inexpensive.
  22. The answer to this question that I heard from a senior manager in London Transport was that trolley buses had all the disadvantages of trams and non of the advantages of diesel enginedbuses. This was before emissions became an issue. Now limited charging of electric buses via overhead lines is making an appearance. https://www.intelligenttransport.com/transport-news/140828/tfl-innovative-pantograph-bus-charging/
  23. Reading this I thought they had a problem with vermin and we're reinstating ship's cats alone with mouse traps.
  24. Most of the OP's questions have now been answered, my own take. I don't think colouring method has been mentioned, many currently made kits now rely on ink jet printing, whereas earlier models used old paints / water colours - think how long old painting last, or commercial printing. Two extremes from me: My earliest modelling memories are my father making Micromodel card kits in the late 1950's and I still have a number of these and they are not faded and intact - I don't know what glue he used. There are kept in boxes. A recent set of brick paper, printed with Canon ink jet original inks was accidentally left in shaded sunlight and faded after 48 hours. Other sheets that have been treated with AV protection have lasted well.
  25. I received a very prompt and positive response from Niu about just purchasing the two gun trucks and have sent my Paypal payment to them. I will using open wagons already in my ownership to create the train.
