  1. I moved to the Sudbury area about 20 years ago and discovered a "model shop" called Perfect Miniatures. The window had a totally disorganised pile of modelling items, some of which had faded due to the window being South facing. I went in there once and the owner was rude and the shop was totally disorganised. I never visited again. Some time later one of the front windows was demolished, probably by a car going round the corner too fast. This remained unmended and the rest of the facade got worse. Then last year the window was mended and the shop sold. Although the main business was dolls houses they also claimed to be an O gauge retailer. This the chaotic nature of the shop and the owners attitude all reminded me of the Chuff 's of the 1970's.
  2. Rather than the manufacturers website go to one of the larger retailers (aka box shifters) sites. The list over 100 N gauge steam loco's. Yes there are lots of livery variations but there is certainly more available than during the last century. Added @Mr_Yogiyou were obviously typing your post at the same time as me. The retailers have a filter for pre orders
  3. Another thing about SW is that any concept of speed and time seems to disappear. In most episodes bodies get back to the morgue in record time. In this week's episode mention was made of the protesters getting to the crash site. This was stated as being 1km despite the aerial shot of the train being rather longer. Also during it's journey the train passed the same pylon three times.
  4. If you are referring to this week's episodes it's not the Severn Valley and has been discussed here
  5. A figure of £80,000 was given as the investment in the starter set, how far would that have gone? The only reason for the 30:day deadline would appear to be the filming schedule. A third number that occurred was SK say he had waited 70 years, to cab Clan Line.
  6. This week's episodes have a railway theme and revolve around an "incident". Both episodes are already on iplayer. In this one there are no continuity errors regarding the engine and train. There are a number of inconsistencies and the one that puzzled my was I could identify the station and tunnel used, but I cannot find the location for the level crossing area used for the police incident area. Having been involved in two film shoots where railway shots were some distance apart I could be that the station/tunnel and level crossing (with pylon) are on different railways,
  7. I completed this and clicked no to clubs. Then I read @Keith Addenbrooke comment about specialist societies I am a member of three such who certainly play a big part in my modelling. None of the three would regard themselves as clubs but two have advertised in modelling magazines.
  8. Is it not as much to do with economics as anything else. Once upon a time many of the Spitfires and Hurricanes that existed as gate guardians were original. Then if was found that the costs of a fibre glass replica was somewhat lower than the market value of the original. The F100 at RAF Lakenheath seems ok after many years on a plinth.
  9. There is the age you get your pension and the time you retire they are not the same thing. Having a retiring age in the UK can be seen as being discrimination.
  10. I'm pleased that this has reactivated as my interest was raised by the heading in our local newspaper/web site about an exhibition in Witham. This will be the first local show I could attend post covid. However bells started to ring as he seems to have resumed using the same press release as pre Covidcand I also recaled this thread. With 15 layouts present, no traders listed and I have seem both of the named layouts I think Mr Dibbens will not be getting my £5 I will head in the opposite direction to both of my LMS's who need the custom more than Mr D does. Roll on the Bury St Edmunds show.
  11. Is it not just that railways have caught up with aviation in respect of seats. Seats with less depth mean that you fit more in a carriage / cabin Seats that weigh less reduce your fuel costs.
  12. In another thread someone asked if there was an universal law where there was a correlation between the length of a thread and it turning into a wishlist. In the case of prototype discussions you could replace wishlist with seats.
  13. Both mentioned recently are Railmail (Watford) and Guy Norris(Covent garden) I think only visited each one each once and was not impressed as I recall the Guy Norris store was managed by the chap who had run Beaties at Holborn. Depending on your view these stores either helped save the hobby or led to the demise of the true LMS as their business model became that used by what we now refer to as box shifters: sell mainstream manufacturers at a discount, large adverts in magazines. Mail order. At time I worked in Central London and soon returned to only using traditional shops and I would even call 1970's Beaties traditional.
  14. Apology to @AY Modthat this is now in an incorrect thread. Please do move it if required.
  15. As I am the OP for this thread and it drifted OT a couple of times I have amend the title and widened the topic. All very interesting replies to date but one observation, I was referring to day to day operation of the railways as you would observe on a journey from a to b rather than one off events. Yes I can still see a Pacific steam engine locally on a passenger train 3 or 4 times a year but that make my Norwichbtrip no less boring under normal circumstances. So to other transport, the succession of twin engined jets over our house into Stansted and Luton is extremely boring. Luckily we're are on the Duxford flight path from northern Europe so we do get a variety during the Airshow season. Cars I can remember the days before massed imports when their was variety of shape between makeers etc. Buses the last picture of a bus I took in commercial service would have been over 10 years ago. Feel free to add ships etc to the conversation.
  16. Playtrains seems to be Hornbys next generation project and a playtrains equivalent of Polly and Smokey Joe would seem to be a good move.
  17. To be seen in 2023 on the box of the revised Airfix model https://uk.airfix.com/products/hawker-hunter-fga9fr10ga11-a09192?modal=-zoom
  18. I hope this in the correct place. The answer may be it has not. This thread was inspired by a couple of postings in the Bachmann new Class 47 discussion. I restarted my interest in railways when I started commuting into Liverpool Street in 1971. Over the years I have been lucky enough to have had a number of jobs which involved UK railway travel, most notably for nearly 25 years working for a organisation witch had over 200 sites in the UK. One of my jobs was to do spot checks on the IT equipment at these sites. These were supposed to be random no ever questioned why sites on obscure railway brach lines turned up. Stourbridge Town being on example. Because of the location of our offices for management meetings most of my travel was out of Euston or Paddington. When I started these trips there were always interesting things to see from pre nationalisation stock to the end of wagonload freight. I cannot recall exactly when but sometime in first decade of this century the view out of the window became boring and I lost interest. Stabling points had gone stock was more standardised. Since retirement my wife and I have undertaken a number of ranger and day trips but these have been more about the destination than the journey. Using Joni Mitchell 's line you don't know what you've got until it,s gone, this year we resumed our use of the train to get to Sheringham from Sudbury since theCovid lockdown. A trip that might have included Cl153, Cl156, Cl170. Cl90 and Mk 3's.cl360 and Cl321. Was now just Flirts Andrew EMU's. I accept that there a a few places of interest, Crewe and Leicester come to mind from trips made in 2019 but in general after about 2005 I have found railways boring.
  19. I did not say how many I would use and how shelf would be supported. I have a small N gauge layout built this way and after 4 years and a house move shows no signs of distortion.
  20. This must be dependent on how you view them. Using UKTV's Android app, on episode 1 all the ad's were at the start, whereas episode11 had them at normal intervals.
  21. The 11th episode of the new series of Hornby: A Model World, now available on the UKTV app may provide Hornby 's view on this. SK said the initial run of the Rebuilt Merchant Navy was 5,000 and they unexpectedly sold 17,500. Volumes were also given for the Rocket. We have no idea of Hornby R&D tooling production cost or their required profit margin. The questions are would overall net profit for a cut down model satisfy their shareholders. My answer to the OP is yes. I happily run a 1980's Black 5 and tender driven B17 and have no intention of, or budget to upgrade them. My red lines are handrails and too clunky valve gear/rods.
  22. These posts seem to answer most of my questions. Unless you use the IKEA lack wall mounting the Lack shelf seems to be a fairly expensive option over buying a wood shelf and some 1"X1" batons from a hardware store. Bearing in mind the an IKEA is at a three hour return trip. Also I cannot use the wall mounting as our house is over 100 years old and does not have any straight walls and wattle walls would not take the weight. I am happy to listen to other thoughts.
  23. @MarcDspecifically asked about Scalescenes no one glue meets all the requirements. You have overlays to add as well as standard card gluing. Like @john newI find standard UHU too stringy and tend to use Bostick. For overlays I use Prittstick I also have PVA glue in my armoury but it can cause inkjet printed sheets to bleed. Some people do use super glue for smaller items. The other trick commonly used is to print on A4 sticky paper. One essential is a roller to ensure there are no bubbles left in your overlays.
  24. Can I add these to my CV? But my searches did not take me there and would have negated the title of the thread.
  25. There are many other reasons UKTV might postpone or editorially alter a programme other than at the wish of the main editorial subject.
