Depends on how much you are prepared to compromise on platform length and train length/number of carriages. I would be tempted to go pre-grouping as small locos and short carriages would look more convincing.

I think the DCC Sound guys have cracked it for diesel locomotives. In their case I genuinely think it adds to the exhibition experience. However the DCC Sound for steam locomotives is woeful in comparison. It jars and seems ‘unattached’ to the model. I’ve thought about it a lot and cannot identify why this should be so. It is I think a combination of factors which would take an hour or more to list. But I do hope they solve the issues, I’ve a sneaky suspicion it would take multiple speakers to create believable sound in a model steam locomotive. (That then brings on the question if there is sound from locomotives then where is the ambient station noise, countryside noise etc etc).

Have you considered these?

For small parts I’ve found the RSU a revelation. It’s effectively a 3rd hand. Not cheap but well worth the money in my opinion. Edit: Assuming it is brass etc and not white metal. I’ve not had the courage to try that yet.

Gorilla Glue Clear Superglue is the current favoured Superglue for resin, not Loctite or similar. But Epoxy Resin is still the preferred choice by many. Obviously it takes a lot longer to cure but has a higher sheer/structural strength than Superglue.

Every 3 to 4 post I get a big gap between posts. Not a problem just means a little bit more scrolling. iPhone SE. Safari. iOS all upto date.

Following a recommendation on here I bought one of these: https://www.circuitspecialists.eu/csi-premier75w-digital-temperature-controlled-solder-station-with-75w-soldering-iron Has a wide variety of tips to choose from and good spares back up if needed. I think it is excellent value for money. I’ve since added a RSU to my armoury after seeing a great demonstration at an S4 North. Between them they cover most of my soldering. I also have a big 60 or 80 watt iron for large pieces of metal but I’ve only used it once. I think I understand TW’s attitude towards glues but modern adhesives are so advanced these days as to be just as strong as soldering etc. The next time you fly to sunny climes on holiday just remember a lot of the aircraft you are on is glued together!

Unfortunately death is an inevitable outcome of life. I’m hoping, and sure it will be, a celebration of Iain’s life, talents and accomplishments.

If by “island in the south” you mean the Isle of Wight I’ve often thought that it would make the ideal ‘operational’ layout inspiration. Self contained system, varying timetables (from the light to intense), small to medium sized stations, interesting rolling stock and great scenery. The only downside would be the limited variety of locomotives. Given a Lottery win and a Barn I’d be very tempted 😀

Agreed. Its a pity Leighton Buzzard is not connected up, nor the Automatic Crispin operational, as the ultimate Buckingham Great Central video would be a run through of the whole day/timetable. Fancy a challenge Mr Gee??!!

I found Jury Duty fascinating and would gladly do it again. However I found the time management of the Courts archaic, inefficient and, if I’m honest, extremely frustrating. The first case we heard was one that had all the lawyers and the Judge rushing to get their text books! We had to decide if the accused was ‘mute of malice or mute due to "visitation of God"’. Quite simply the accused wouldn’t speak to anyone; lawyers, prison wardens, visitors, family, not a soul. The second case would have been fascinating. Love, rivalry, cannabis farming and arson. We’d just heard the opening statements when a fellow Juror recognised the Defendant’s girlfriend’s Father. A note was passed to the Judge and as the case was barely opened we were all dismissed. The last case was an attack by one prisoner on another in the local Prison. A typical story but what struck me was how useless the Barristers were. One could hardly string a sentence together. The other seemed to think he was above such things and had to be rebuked by the Judge. All in all the two weeks could have been condensed into 2 to 3 days if properly organised. Take a good book!

As an addendum to my post I do hope that, in the fullness of time, Iain’s layouts will be preserved just like the Rev. Peter Denny’s was. And, if possible, be exhibited as a tribute to Iain and his craftsmanship.

Such sad news. Iain was one of, possibly the main, inspiration in my modelling journey. I saw him twice; once as a young modeller with his Butley Mill layout and I dare not speak to a modelling god! And the second time was with Trerice at Scalefour North I think. This time I dared to talk to him and found him a very approachable chap. Much like I found his writing style. His books on layout design and kit construction are my “go to” books on the subject. My just begun layout is very closely based on his variation of Minories, Harestone. I might change it’s name to something more Rice inspired if I can think of one. Rest in Peace Sir.

That’s very sad news. He was one of, possibly my main, modelling inspiration. RIP Iain.

I just wish PECO would move away from their “standard” crossing angle (12 degrees I think) and produce more prototypical turnouts. Start with a B7 with complimentary slips and crossings and proceed from there.

Errr That would be my fault! Sorry. My main hobby is sailing and a thread came up on a Sailing Forum about Model Railways. I posted your Buckingham video Tony and then got inundated with queries about it so I posted some more including the “new” video with the Rev Denny in it. Crispin is sailing with a sailing clergyman who picked up on the thread and posted that he was currently sailing with Crispin. I can’t link to the Forum because it is a restricted one and you have to post in other Forums before you are let in! The main Forum is YBW.com.
