  1. There is mention of it here.. https://islingtonlife.london/discover-islington/local-history/a-short-history-of-waste-and-recycling-in-islington/
  2. It's a fascinating bit of railway. Originally connected to the ECML at Hatfield and worked as a single line alongside the main line. It was completely track circuited from Hatfield to Ayot. There was the facility to pass a freight at Welwyn Garden City via a bidirectional loop. Beyond Ayot the single line was protected by key token working. The section being Ayot to Harpenden. I have not seen evidence of auxiliary instruments at Blackbridge or Wheathampstead but it would not surprise me to find there were. Just short of Blackbridge there was an occupation crossing with loud sounding bells worked by track circuits and some simple selection circuits so the bells only rang with a train approaching the crossing. The bells had an ingenious proving circuit so a signalman was alerted if one didn't ring. I'm not sure which box it was repeated to but I assume it was Ayot. In latter years the single line to Hatfield was dispensed with and the train was shuffled back and forth at Welwyn Garden City to gain the up lines. This is a picture of the shuffle in progress. The stinking wagons would have to pass the platforms three times to.get from the Luton Line to the up lines.
  3. It was a six way junction. You could have gone to St Ives until the mid sixties. The facing move to the Sutton line was removed in the early thirties though. My "model" railway still has it, worked as a key token section to Sutton.
  4. I’ve heard the most horrendous stories of this train especially in high summer. I won’t mention specifics but the contents of the bins from Smithfield market found its way to these trains along with waste from several hospitals.
  5. I see the pullmans next to a loading dock. My guess is the dust carts tipped the rubbish onto the hardstanding and some sort of loading shovel scooped it up and tipped it in. The sdeagulls are attracted by something.
  6. I’m sure it’s French Drove. The distant arm has thrown me as it doesn’t appear on any paperwork I have managed to locate. I have several S&T drawings to locate yet. I know the distant arm isn’t on any of them but ghosting might be.
  7. This has caused me to dig out my Kestrel and hook it up to some empties...
  8. I managed to solder the sole bars into the wrong holes. With the aid of a cooker and a few tools the day has been saved.

  9. The plough is made from an ex LNER group standard tender. Something like this but this is not it. Found a better picture..
  10. I have resorted to a fixed tail light at each end of my rake of MGR hoppers. Similarly the hand of god appears and rotates a brakevan now n then. Whats wrong with the odd intermediate tail lamp anyway?..
  11. My twins are nine years old today. Who pressed fast forward?

My goddaughter turned 19 this year - it feels like only 5 minutes ago that I was feeding her a bottle in my arms!

  12. I saw this and thought of you guys… looks like a brute or two still in use..
  13. He’d look a bit odd upside down with the wagon on the tippler
  14. Taken this afternoon after servicing at Dereham
  15. It has taken a lot of effort to get mine to run satisfactorily, way beyond what I would say is reasonable for a new model. I think I am there with it now. The real test will come later. My 8 year old lad wants to use it for some shunting.
  16. There it is. Plug in the wrong socket. Many thanks for all the replies.
  17. It’s a Heljan class 14 with a 21 pin decoder. I’ve tried an MX638D, DCC Concepts and AE decoders. All produce the same results
